Mercenary's War-Chapter 1989 - 1966: The Strongest Sniper
Gao Yang and Alexander emerged simultaneously, but no one fired, as Specter refused to follow their rhythm.
Both Gao Yang and Alexander were highly confident marksmen. They believed that even if Specter targeted them, they had the ability to retaliate and eliminate Specter before being hit. Although such confidence seemed unreasonable against Specter, losing it entirely would mean being comprehensively defeated by Specter and living perpetually in his shadow.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity couldn’t be ruined by a single sniper. The area one person could control was ultimately limited, and Gao Yang and Alexander had both left their cover, raising their guns to search for Specter’s position.
If Specter didn’t fire at either Alexander or Gao Yang, he had relinquished the initiative.
Popping out suddenly, completing a search for Specter before firing, and waiting in ambush for Specter to show himself before shooting were not the same in difficulty, so Gao Yang had no intention of retreating back to cover.
"We’ve suppressed Specter; now’s the time. Attack Iron Madonna immediately, free attack."
Glolov set up the machine gun and fired bursts at Iron Madonna’s main force. Although the distance was far, his shooting could definitely affect Iron Madonna’s movement.
The people who had shed their protective gear immediately leapt out of the riverbed, beginning to pursue Iron Madonna. Gao Yang and Alexander, however, remained perfectly still, waiting for Specter to appear.
"Toad, Tyrannosaurus, you go support; leave this to us."
Li Jinfang and Eileen immediately began repositioning. They couldn’t let everyone be stalled by Specter. Having finally suppressed Specter, Gao Yang naturally hoped to commit most of his forces to the battle against Iron Madonna’s main force.
The battle was intense, but Gao Yang had no time for even a moment’s observation. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
He put the night vision device back on, and with the thermal imaging scope, Gao Yang thought he should have long since discovered Specter, but hadn’t. Neither he nor Alexander found any trace of Specter.
"I believe Specter may have already left."
Alexander spoke softly. After a moment of thought, Gao Yang murmured, "If he moved, we should be able to find him."
"Not necessarily. We don’t know the terrain ahead. What if there are convenient hiding places and covers for movement, like an irrigation ditch?"
The troubles with nighttime combat lay right here: with the distance and going beyond the range of the night vision device, observing the terrain became inconvenient.
Gao Yang sighed and said, "Yes, you’re right. It seems we have to move on our own."
"We’ll cover each other as we advance; if Specter’s still watching us, he’ll respond."
"Understood, you cover first."
After speaking, Gao Yang tucked his gun away, immediately bent over, and charged forward, but he had barely covered five meters when Alexander suddenly fired a shot, prompting Gao Yang to instantly halt and raise his weapon.
"Teddy’s hit!"
A voice came through the radio with frustrated exasperation. Someone pursuing Iron Madonna had been hit again, and just then, Alexander exclaimed in extreme irritation, "F**k! F**k!"
Normally calm, Alexander couldn’t maintain his composure. He didn’t use the radio but instead shouted directly to Gao Yang, "Specter has shifted position, but he’s continuously watching us. As soon as we move, he fires immediately, though not at us! He’s still obstructing our pursuit! Eleven o’clock position! Distance is five hundred meters, with cover—I think it’s something like a canal."
Gao Yang promptly aimed in the direction Alexander had indicated, and after a momentary search, a figure suddenly emerged from the ground, fired quickly, and immediately ducked back down.
"Big Dog’s been hit!"
A shiver ran through Gao Yang’s heart, but Glolov then quickly reassured him.
"I’m fine, the bullet hit the edge of my helmet!"
"Cease attack!"
Gao Yang hoarsely ordered the cessation of the attack. With Specter unsolved, they couldn’t continue, because although Gao Yang yearned to thoroughly eliminate Iron Madonna, he absolutely couldn’t accept losing anyone else to them. Specter, given the chance to fire, would definitely cause casualties—he absolutely had that capability. This time, Glolov was fortunate; next time, but Glolov couldn’t always be so lucky.
Gao Yang had seen Specter, yet he hadn’t fired, for they were too far apart, and Specter was too fast. In Specter’s swift maneuvers, by the time the bullet reached him, he would already be concealed again.
Unless Gao Yang had a laser gun, or he could defy the laws of physics so his bullets were unaffected by space and time; otherwise, at this distance, he couldn’t kill Specter.
Specter was far from Gao Yang but close to the pursuing team, practically blocking their direct path.
Alexander muttered, "Ram, you’re the best marksman I’ve seen, but Specter is the best sniper I’ve encountered. He has achieved everything a sniper can, and even the impossible for a sniper, he has accomplished."
Gao Yang’s resolve wavered slightly, but he violently shook his head to dispel his internal thoughts, then resolutely declared, "Specter will die by our hands; victory will surely belong to us. Continue closing in on Specter. When he can no longer dodge our bullets, that’ll be his end. Besides, how do you know that’s Specter?"
"His ghostlike speed and movements, maintaining an extraordinarily high command rate even while rapidly maneuvering. Do you think Iron Madonna could have two snipers of Specter’s level? Don’t kid yourself; there are barely a few such people worldwide."
Specter’s intent is simple: to impede Satan and Aurora’s pursuit. Thus, as long as Gao Yang’s group doesn’t move, Specter vanishes instantly, never firing extra shots just to cause harm.
"Let’s continue, keep closing in on Specter."
"Alright, you cover, I advance."
The two took turns advancing another few dozen meters, but this short distance felt immensely taxing. Gao Yang felt more exhausted than after running several kilometers, mainly due to mental fatigue. When all attention and energy are focused on preventing a sudden strike from Specter, the mental toll is immense.
"Tank, that’s one of our tanks, right?"
Gao Yang dared only to glance quickly, then immediately affirmed, "By the direction, yes, it’s our tank."
With a slightly wry smile, Alexander remarked, "Will we ultimately have to rely on tanks to solve this? Honestly, it’s a blow to my pride. Specter is truly formidable—the best sniper hands down."
