Chapter 226: Insufferable Alphas

It should’ve been history by now.

Three years had passed since Luna Reana of the Black Moon Pack made their jaws drop.

Three years ago, her destined mate – the one chosen by the Moon goddess herself – collapsed at her feet, blood pouring from every orifice.

No one knew what killed Hale. The Alphas called it a disease, buried the matter along with the man, and moved on.

But eight days ago, it happened again.

This time, it wasn’t an Alpha. Not a warrior. Just a servant. A man the Alphas barely noticed – until they realized she’d taken him into her bed. And now, he’s dead too...by a monster’s claws.

Some whispered she called him her second chance mate. Most said she had lost her mind, or did it to solicit a response from them.

A servant could never be an Alpha. A servant could never sit beside them in the Council. It was an insult. A challenge. One the Council of Alphas could not ignore.

But that wasn’t the true matter at hand anymore.

It was the Luna herself.

The Alphas hadn’t questioned it before. But now, with two mates dead, they found it... strange. Unsettling, even.

The council room was dimly lit, smoke curling from incense that did little to mask the stench of distrust, disgust, and suspicion oozing from the Alphas.

Twelve Alphas sat around the semi circular table. Three seats remained empty.

Reana wasn’t there yet.

"She should be here by now," growled Alpha Dorren of the Hollow Fangs. His voice was like gravel, his yellow eyes narrowed. "Unless the third one’s dead too, and she’s busy digging his grave."

A few chuckles echoed, dry and humorless.

"She’s cursed," muttered Alpha Rhys of Ashgrove. "Two mates, both dead. I wouldn’t touch her, even with a silver blade."

The most important thing they should be talking about right now should be the monster that allegedly killed the servant, but no, none cared about what they didn’t see. The cowards preferred to talk about the same woman they all hated, yet want to take to bed.

Luna Reana.

"She doesn’t need touching," said Alpha Dennis of the South Wood Pack, voice low, eyes dark with danger. "She just needs to be put down."

That drew a few sharp glances. One or two nodded.

He hates Reana, especially after the way she humiliated him eight days ago, he just wanted her gone.

But Alpha Dren leaned back in his chair, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Or claimed," he said with a smirk. "Properly. The woman walks like she owns every man in the room. That cold fire in her eyes... You think she’s cursed, but I think she’s just never been broken."

"You want to try?" Kael sneered. "She’d gut you before you got your pants down."

"Maybe," Dren said. "But what a way to die, hm?" He exhaled slowly. "Can you imagine it? Her on her knees, that wild hair tangled in your fist, eyes full of hatred you could ride until she screamed—"

"That’s enough," Ronan snapped, but his gaze was distant, as if he too had pictured it.

"Alpha Dren, you still have the balls to think about her sucking your cock after what she’d done to her two mates? Don’t you like that tiny cock at all?" Alpha Hargan teased and others laughed. They didn’t forget how Alpha Julius insulted Dren in the previous meeting.

Speaking of Julius, the Alphas simultaneously shifted their gazes to the man in white fur coat, sitting elegantly in his seat and slowly sipping his tea, like he wasn’t part of the meeting.

"Hmph," Alpha Dren scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Dog. I’m sure he’s licking her pot clean every night, since he practically lives with her now." The bitterness in his voice could not be contained, even if he drank a sea of honey.

Dren literally dreams of fucking Luna Reana every night and it was driving him crazy.

Alpha Julius finally set down his porcelain cup with a soft clink and lifted his cold, unreadable eyes that gleamed with that quiet, polished menace only the most dangerous men wore like a second skin.

"You’re not entirely wrong, Dren," Julius said, voice smooth as aged wine. "But I don’t lick. I bite. And unlike the rest of you, she lets me."

A tense silence blanketed the chamber.

Alpha Dren’s chair suddenly creaked as he shifted in his seat, veins popping on his forehead as he tried to suppress his fury and jealousy. "So you admit it? You’ve bedded the cursed Luna?"

"I admit nothing," Julius replied. "I simply know the difference between a woman who needs breaking and one who’s already broken everyone here."

Alpha Dennis snarled. "If you’re protecting her, you’re a fool. She’s dangerous."

"She is," Julius admitted, "but only to her enemies." Then he added calmly as his cup hung between his lips. "You have every reason to be scared, Dennis."

Dennis growled, teeth bared as he rose from his seat, "Who said I’m scared of her?!"

"Perhaps, not her, but her warrior." Julius sipped his tea, eyes glued to the stem dancing in the cup.

Julius perceived Dennis’s fear when Markkus stood up to him eight days ago. The real answer came when Markkus killed some warriors who escorted Alpha Dennis, five days ago, and Dennis did nothing.

Alpha Dennis, the Alpha with the largest pack in the Mainland, the one who barked the loudest and punished the hardest — did nothing when his pack members were killed.

Although this matter wasn’t known to other Alphas, Julius knew because he was there. That night in the woods left him stunned by how much strength Markkus hid behind his quiet loyalty.

"Alpha Dennis, what is Alpha Julius talking about?" Someone broke the silence along with the tension that rested on Alpha Dennis’ jaws.

"He’s bluffing," Alpha Dennis replied with a gruff and looked away. But his reaction only hinted at the truth behind Alpha Julius’s words. The shift in Alpha Dennis’ posture—the tightening of his fists, the flicker of unease in his eyes—didn’t go unnoticed.

Murmurs rippled through the hall, eyes darting between the two Alphas like spectators waiting for a storm to break.

Alpha Julius didn’t smile, but there was a cruel satisfaction in the calmness of his voice as he stepped forward. "Bluffing, Dennis? Is that what you told them when you buried the truth along with their bodies?"

A sharp intake of breath echoed from the crowd. Even the wind seemed to hush.

The Alphas might not know what was going on, but at the mention of bodies, they couldn’t help fixing the puzzle. A few days ago, they noticed that Alpha Dennis’ entourage had dwindled. His close friends asked about them but Dennis claimed to have sent them back to the pack to seek their oracle’s help in finding out what had happened here.

They all believed him, but now...? 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"You better tread carefully, Julius," Dennis growled, his voice low, threatening. "You don’t know what you’re talking about."

"Perhaps," Julius shrugged and just then, the heavy door groaned.
