Chapter 247: Listen!

Violet had double-checked and even confirmed if the meat had to be raw for the twentieth time before she went ahead to walk closer to where it had been placed.

Holding her hands to her nose, she did her best to fight back the nauseous feeling she felt at the onslaught of the heavy smell of raw and fresh meat, still tainted with blood.

She stamped down the urge to curse under her breath at why she had to follow Cain and why, regardless of how many times she pointed out where the food was, the beast refused to go unless she also went along.

Not surprised to enter and see it instantly dive forward to chomp on the meat with reckless abandon and delight—something that looked more animal than human, which worried her beyond words.

Henry had even gone as far as to mention that feeding in beast form wasn’t good and would only worsen Cain’s resolve as a human, but Violet simply needed to point at the beast behind her.

"So how do you intend to stop it when it can no longer control its hunger?" Violet asked, not surprised when Henry instantly nodded his head to show that he understood.

The more she watched, the more she raised both hands to her nose, noting the blood the meat on the ground was covered with and how easily Cain’s beast tore it apart as if they were simply pieces of cloth.

Violet had just taken a step to walk out when she was taken aback by the sudden stop of the chomping sounds. Turning back around, she saw the beast’s head turned in her direction with a look on its face as if it was about to drag her back, like it had done before, only to continue eating.

Violet immediately froze, leaning her head against the door as she wondered if she could open it without it being taken as an attempt to escape. After not moving for a few seconds, she heard it begin to eat again.

Her only delight was that the more it ate, the less the smell lingered, though the tearing noises and loud growls did nothing to endear her to it. Aware that, considering her size, it would have no problem swallowing her whole, her mind wandered as she stood by the door, watching. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

It wasn’t until the beast was done that she immediately pulled open the door and stepped out as fast as she could, not surprised to hear footsteps behind her a second later. The faint smell of blood was the first thing she noticed until she turned around to see its entire head covered in it, coupled with a few pieces of meat.

"You need a bath!" she sighed, not surprised to hear a growl that for sure meant it disagreed, coupled with the heavy shaking of its head. Even as it began to lick its mouth and face with its huge tongue, confirming in one swift moment that it could indeed understand what Violet was trying to say.

Violet was a little impressed as she watched it intently, skillfully licking itself clean until she could not see a single speck of blood on its fur.

And though she should be impressed by its actions, it only worried her more, since the more animalistic Cain’s actions, the harder it would be for him to return to his human form.

"Fine! I might as well find something to eat before heading to the library!" Violet mumbled out loud with a faint smile on her face. Realizing for the second time how easier it was with the beast and how, surprisingly, not once had she even considered running away from the mansion and from Cain.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think that I didn’t want him to turn back into his human self, aware that if not for the fact that he would completely lose his mind, it was something she might get used to.

Turning around to head back inside the mansion and away from the shed floor behind the mansion where the meat had been prepared, she heard loud steps.

Raising her head, she saw Henry dashing straight for her with a speed that clearly surpassed human limits. A frown instantly appeared on her face as she realized that whatever reason Henry felt the need to run to her—and couldn’t take care of himself—was definitely a problem for Cain. A problem that now somehow belonged to her...

"What’s wrong?" she asked even before he came to a full stop in front of her, not surprised to hear him begin to speak even before she was done.

"I just got news that Lord Eldric is at the main gates. Should I let him in?" Henry asked, even as Violet’s eyes widened in shock, wondering why that should even be a question. Her heart began to race as she realized that since they were inside Cain’s mansion, as scary as Lord Eldric looked, he indeed had no right to enter.

"No! Don’t let him in!" Violet hurriedly responded, turning around to look at Cain’s huge beast form behind her. Aware that even if they had somehow heard about his condition, unless they saw it and confirmed it for themselves, it would at least give her more time to help Cain shift back to his human form.

But she had just given Henry her response when she instantly heard him reply with a worried expression in his eyes.

"What about the others? Lord Magnus, Lady Bella, Lord Harriet, and Lord Grainger? Their cars are also waiting outside the gate!"

"It’s clear that they’ve already heard about Cain’s unique situation, and they’re here to see for themselves!"

As much as Violet tried not to panic, she could already feel her heartbeat increase in intensity as she stared back at Henry with an anxious expression on her face.

"Isn’t this bad? He clearly can’t turn back into his human form. Won’t they use this as an excuse to remove him as lord?" she asked, having seen the way they acted at the last Council meeting Cain brought her to and how they were simply waiting to take advantage wherever they saw one.

She grew even more worried when Henry nodded his head, until she heard him speak.

"They can’t, unless they determine that he has completely lost all his senses—which is clearly not the case since he listens to you," Henry said, his words bringing a frown to Violet’s face as she also couldn’t help but understand why Cain’s beast seemed to do so.

Turning to look the beast in its red eyes as it looked back at her, she spoke to it.

"Turn back to your human form!" she said, hoping that if it truly listened, it would immediately do as she asked. Only to wait as seconds ticked by, still silently staring at the beast, which stared right back at her.
