Penelope sighed. ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐—ฒ๐™š๏ฝ—๐šŽ๐›๐™ฃ๐จ๐™ซ๐˜ฆ๐—น.cเซฆm

โ€œBecause Saul has narrowed it down to three people,โ€ she said. โ€œHe asked me to help check on two of them.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€ Ashleigh growled. ๐˜งr๐—ฒ๐‘’๐”€๐˜ฆ๐™—๐“ƒoฮฝ๐‘’l.๐œ๐—ผm

โ€œWhen all the teams were pulled in, the scouts got rearranged. I was placed at the edge along with two other people. One of them, I found not long before I found you. Dead in the snow.โ€

โ€œWhat about the other?โ€

โ€œNo sign of him,โ€ she said. โ€œHe was already gone by the time the alarms went off.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œOren.โ€

Ashleigh furrowed her brows.

โ€œI know that nameโ€ฆโ€ she said quietly. โ€œWhy do I know that name?โ€

โ€œBecause he was one of my brotherโ€™s scouts.โ€

Ashleighโ€™s eyes widened. She remembered him now. He was one of the wolves that had helped Granger escape. The one that requested to be sent outside of Winter.

โ€œThen he is the one that has Bell,โ€ Ashleigh said. โ€œWe need to find him!โ€

Caleb drove his sword down on the wolf, pinning it to the ground. The maddened creature continued to throw its body side to side and clamp its jaws in Calebโ€™s direction. In doing so, it only hastened its demise, tearing at its flesh and organs with each movement against the sharp blade of his sword.

โ€œThese arenโ€™t roguesโ€ฆ.โ€ Caleb said as he pulled the sword out of the thrashing body. Though practically cut in half, it still tried to reach him. Finally, with a squelching grunt, the monster took its last ragged breath.

โ€œWhatever they are, their numbers seem endless!โ€ Axel shouted. Another ten or so of these wolves made their way out from between the flames of the buildings.

All around them, cold warriors were fighting against the rabid dogs, they were not difficult to fight, but they were tenacious, unyielding. And there were so many of them.

โ€œAlpha!โ€ a man shouted behind them. โ€œLook!โ€

At the call, both Axel and Caleb turned to see another group approaching. There were at least forty men and women wearing expressions of malice and contempt.

โ€œAutumn wolves,โ€ Caleb said.

โ€œHow do you know?โ€ Axel asked.

โ€œAlice thought Roman might be behind this,โ€ he replied.

Axel turned to Caleb.

โ€œYou spoke with her?โ€ he asked.

Caleb nodded, โ€œSheโ€™s the reason we even learned there was a problem in Winter.โ€

Axel smiled and turned back to face the new additions to the battlefield.

Galen stepped up beside Caleb.

โ€œWe can take these guys, no problem,โ€ he grinned.

โ€œWe can take them,โ€ Caleb said, indicating himself and Axel. โ€œYou have somewhere else to be.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œAshleigh was headed toward the western border, near the mountain. She was searching for Bell, who had been led away by an unnamed scout.โ€

โ€œWhat!?โ€ Galen shouted, panicked.

โ€œGo, weโ€™ve got this,โ€ Axel said.

Galen nodded quickly, and without looking back, he ran to the west, shifting into his wolf to move faster.

โ€œYou ready?โ€ Axel asked.

โ€œI better be,โ€ Caleb said. โ€œAlice said that if I donโ€™t get you on the phone with her tonight, she will tear down the walls of Summer.โ€

Axel chuckled.

โ€œWe better get to work,โ€ he said. โ€œDonโ€™t want to leave you homeless.โ€

Caleb laughed.

Together, they charged at the party of Autumn wolves who were already making their way toward the two alphas.

โ€œWhy exactly did Axel say he needed to see me?โ€ Bell asked, looking around the area. She immediately noticed where they were going.

The border wasnโ€™t far now.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t say, only that I needed to bring you to him.โ€

โ€œAnd where is he, exactly?โ€ she asked.

โ€œNot far.โ€

โ€œOren,โ€ Bell called, stopping where she stood. โ€œIโ€™m not going any further until you tell me where you are taking me.โ€

โ€œAlpha Axel wants to keep you safe. So he has arranged a bunker to hide you.โ€

โ€œFrom what?โ€

โ€œThere is an attack happening right now. He didnโ€™t want you to be scared, so he told me not to tell you until you were safe.โ€

โ€œAttack by who?โ€ Bell asked, feeling her pulse quicken.

โ€œAutumn wolves,โ€ Oren replied, โ€œnow, please. We have to go.โ€

Bell didnโ€™t move.

Her heart was racing, and her throat felt dry. She put her hands over her swollen belly, hugging it.

She shook her head.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t make sense,โ€ she said softly.

Bell licked her lips nervously.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Oren asked.

โ€œIf Autumn wolves are hereโ€ฆ Axel wouldnโ€™t send me to the border.โ€

Oren clenched his jaw.

โ€œIt also doesnโ€™t make sense that we havenโ€™t seen anyone. We are close enough to the border that we should have seen the other scouts by now.โ€

Oren lowered his head and sighed.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he whispered. โ€œI donโ€™t have a choice.โ€

Bell swallowed.

โ€œWe all have a choice, Oren,โ€ she replied.

โ€œAfter Grangerโ€ฆ I couldnโ€™t face anyone in Winter without seeing the hate and disgust in their eyes. Even my own family,โ€ he sighed. โ€œSo I joined one of the long-distance scouting parties. I met my mate there, and I thought things were finally getting back on track.โ€

He sighed.

โ€œBut then we got attacked. Captured by Autumn wolvesโ€ฆ they tortured us. My mate and I were the only survivors. When they realized who she was to me, they dragged her away. They let me go, but they kept her. So as long as I give you to them, they will give her to me.โ€

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€ Bell shook her head, speaking softly as tears rolled down her cheeks. โ€œYou canโ€™t do thisโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œI have to,โ€ he said, grabbing her shoulder and pushing her forward. โ€œKeep moving.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re lying to you!โ€ she shouted, dragging her feet. โ€œThey will never give her back to you!โ€

โ€œThey will!โ€ he shouted, pulling her roughly toward him. โ€œI already proved myself to them!โ€

Bell gasped, surprised by his aggression and the guilt she saw in his eyes.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ what did you do?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWhat I had to,โ€ he sighed.

She looked carefully at him and considered what he had said.

โ€œWaitโ€ฆโ€ she whispered. โ€œWe havenโ€™t heard of any scouting parties going missing before Wyattโ€ฆ.โ€

Oren clenched his jaw.

โ€œLetโ€™s go!โ€ he growled, trying to push her, but she planted her feet.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ.โ€ Bell said with a shaky voice and angry tears. โ€œYou were there.โ€ฆ Youโ€ฆ shot the arrowโ€ฆ.! You killedโ€ฆ Wyatt?โ€

He closed his eyes, turning his head away from her.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t enough to give them the routesโ€ฆ this was the only way to prove that I would do what they wanted.โ€

Bell let out a pained and shaky breath.

โ€œYou bastard!โ€ an angry shout came from the trees behind them.

Before Oren or Bell could react, an arrow came speeding out of the branches above, finding purchase in his shoulder as he uttered a painful shout.

Bell was knocked away when he jerked his arm into his body.

Penelope dropped out of the tree. She aimed her bow at him with an angry fire in her eyes.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ are the reason I lost them! You killed my team! You traitor!โ€
