Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Regrets, Maybe

Yasmin and Ayobe turned their gazes toward the opening door as Iyvre stepped out.

"Oh, you’re out!" Ayobe exclaimed in pleasant surprise.

"Did you succeed?" Yasmin questioned, immediately circling around Iyvre and checking for any physical changes. "I see no changes," she muttered, eliciting a chuckle from Iyvre.

"I succeeded, and the changes are on the inside," Iyvre remarked.

"Yes!" Ayobe squeaked as she rushed in for a hug, embracing Iyvre with genuine joy.

"How does it feel?" Yasmin asked from the side.

"Just the same feeling, except I could probably punch harder," Iyvre chuckled.

"Well, that’s lame," Yasmin mused. "Anyway, we’ve captured Drogon."

"What?" Iyvre barked, immediately pulling her blade from her magic pouch.

"Where is he? Are you guys okay? Where’s Rael?" she peppered them with questions, brandishing her blade while using her now-heightened warrior senses to scan the area.

"Calm down, sis. It’s not that serious at least not anymore," Ayobe said.

"What do you mean ’calm down’? You just said you caught Drogon, of the Dark Apostles!" Iyvre erupted in surprise at her sisters’ calm demeanours. "Why are you two suspiciously calm?" she asked skeptically.

"Are you two joking?"

"No, what I said is true, and it’s all thanks to Rael," Yasmin responded.

"I don’t understand," Iyvre muttered confusedly, turning to Ayobe, who nodded.

"She’s right. He saved us."

"He didn’t save me. I could have escaped even without his help," Yasmin pouted.

"Yeah, right," Ayobe mocked with a gleeful smile.

"Wait, you mean to tell me Rael captured Drogon? Was it through the array?" Iyvre questioned, still very much in disbelief.

"No, it was more of his stupid recklessness and luck," Yasmin remarked, before she and Ayobe filled Iyvre in on all that had happened while she was ascending to the next rank

After being briefed on what had happened, Iyvre was beyond shocked. She was stunned that the same Rael she’d spared with had actually matched Drogon in battle.

"Where is he?" she asked, as Ayobe and Yasmin led her to where they kept the captive

They had tied Drogon to the cage Rael had used to cover the pit he’d dug for the captured beasts.

Iyvre faltered, knitting her brow in slight surprise at Drogon’s current state. She couldn’t help but wonder if this was the same prideful warrior she knew. She realized it was the backlash of his technique that had mostly landed him in this condition, but the fact that he barely still lived showed how tenacious he truly was or how much vitality a Bronze warrior possessed.

However, she had no way of knowing for sure and wasn’t about to put herself in that same condition.

Hearing the footsteps closing in on him, the almost corpse-like Drogon slowly raised his one functional eye if it could still be called that.

He stared at Iyvre as his maddening mumbling stopped.

"Come to mock me?" he wheezed, his voice clearly struggling through his one barely functional lung.

"I won’t bring myself that low," Iyvre ventured

"Yes, low. It is quite lowly of you to hide behind the back of a human, isn’t—" Drogon retched as a wet, rattling hack erupted from his exposed throat.

"You’re the one to mock. You should say your last prayers, Drogon. Your patron, for whom you abandoned your righteousness, clearly doesn’t give a second life," Yasmin taunted, glaring at him with a disgusted look.

"Hahaha! And you, the red-haired witch, clinging to a human for protection even after what they did to your family? How hypocritical, hehe."

"You bastard!" Yasmin growled, about to summon a fireball to incinerate Drogon.

"Stop," Iyvre admonished, raising her hand to stop Yasmin’s outstretched, glowing palm. "Don’t let his foul words get into your head; he’s obviously on his last legs."

She turned back to Drogon with a stoic expression.

"Trying to stir up emotions."

"Well, I tried, hehe. Lady Legolas, the great shame of the Legolas family," Drogon croaked.

"Are you sure we shouldn’t slit his throat or at least gouge out his tongue?" Ayobe spat, clearly irritated by Drogon’s ranting.

"I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Lady Ayobe," a low voice called from the side. Xaphxan stepped forward, finally revealing himself to Drogon, whose lifeless gaze lit up with surprise.

"Why not?" Yasmin questioned, still glaring daggers at Drogon.

"Because of the Dark Curse," Iyvre muttered. "That’s what he wanted. He wanted to lay a curse."

"The Dark Curse? What is that?" Ayobe asked cautiously

"I don’t know much about it, but it’s always a last-ditch effort of the higher-ranking members of the Dark Apostles when they’re at the brink of death. So long as a person lands a killing blow, they’d be plagued by the curse," Xaphxan explained with grim stillness, recounting what he’d heard while still in the cult.

"Sinister bastards," Yasmin spat at Drogon, feeling enraged and mostly relieved she hadn’t fallen for his trick.

"You traitorous scum, you disgrace your master, our patron shall curse you" Drogon wheezed.

"I never believed myself to be a member, so I’m no traitor, and he is not my master. I serve a new one now," Xaphxan rushed to reply, wanting to clarify before the sisters stared at him with the same gaze they threw at Drogon.

"That human," Drogon winced, gritting his teeth in hatred. "You all hide behind him. You think he can protect you from the wrath of my patron? You fools. You think these walls can protect you from the Withered? Heheh... fools... cough... indeed," he continued, as more thick droplets of black blood spilled out of his opened torso

"This is your end, Drogon. Let us worry about our future," Iyvre said, as she could see Drogon’s heart finally coming to a stop. "And as for your patron and brethens, I’ll be ready when they do come," she added, as she released her white aether from her body, letting it coat around her in a whitish fog.

"Yo...u... ehh..."

Drogon widened his eyes before they slowly dimmed, turning his world black. He died knowing that the once ally and now rival had stepped into the same rank that tempted him into joining the Dark Apostles and now had claimed his life. Regrets, maybe.
