Married To The Ruthless Billionaire For Revenge-Chapter 32: A Night Of Unanswered Questions
Chapter 32: A NIGHT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
Elena barely slept.
Adrian’s confession replayed in her mind over and over again — the shattered glass, the storm in his eyes, the raw truth in his voice when he practically revealed that he was falling for her.
It wasn’t supposed to happen.
Not like this.
Not when she owed Lydia... not when the Kanes still had sins to answer for.
But how was she supposed to ignore the way his hand trembled when it touched her cheek?
How was she supposed to forget the way he looked at her, like she was the only calm inside the hurricane of his life?
By dawn, Elena was sitting on the balcony attached to her bedroom, wrapped in a light robe, staring at the quiet garden below. The sun hadn’t fully risen yet, but the sky was turning the soft color of fading blush — delicate, gentle, the opposite of everything she felt inside.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the soft sound of the balcony doors sliding open.
Elena turned.
Adrian stood there.
Not in his usual tailored suit.
Not looking like the ruthless billionaire the world feared.
He stood barefoot, shirt slightly undone, hair still damp from a shower he’d taken far too early.
And for the first time, he didn’t look cold.
He looked tired.
Worn.
Human.
"Elena," he said softly.
Her heart thudded.
He had never used that tone with her before — gentle, cautious, almost... careful.
He walked toward her, stopping a few feet away as if giving her space was suddenly important to him.
"I didn’t sleep," he admitted quietly.
She looked away. "I didn’t either."
A faint breath escaped him.
Not quite a laugh.
Not quite a sigh.
He stepped closer.
"Elena... about last night—"
"Adrian," she interrupted softly, "you were upset. You don’t have to explain anything."
He shook his head.
"I wasn’t drunk. I wasn’t confused. I meant every word I said."
Her stomach twisted.
He sat down in the chair beside her, so close she could feel the heat of his body. For a moment, he didn’t speak. He just looked at the sky, hands clasped together, jaw tight.
"Elena... there’s something you should know."
Her breath caught.
"I found out what my father is planning," Adrian said. "And it’s worse than I thought."
She swallowed hard.
"Tell me."
He hesitated — actually hesitated — as if unsure whether sharing this would push her away or pull her closer.
Finally, he exhaled.
"He hired someone to investigate you."
Elena’s heartbeat stumbled.
"He believes you’re hiding something," Adrian continued. "Your past, your family, your motive. He thinks you’re here for revenge or leverage against the Kanes."
A cold shiver ran through her.
"And you?" Elena asked quietly. "What do you think?"
Adrian finally looked at her.
Really looked at her. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
His eyes searched her face deeply — not accusing, not doubting, but almost pleading for an answer he wasn’t sure he wanted.
"I think..." he whispered, "that even if you are hiding something, I would still choose to protect you."
Her breath trembled.
That confession was more dangerous than anything else he had said.
Because it meant he was crossing lines without knowing the truth.
It meant he was fighting for her without understanding her reasons.
It meant he was falling deeper — and that terrified her more than anything.
"Elena," he said, voice low, "I need you to tell me something."
She tensed.
"Are you in danger?" he asked.
Her throat closed.
His gaze darkened instantly, becoming sharp with concern.
"Elena. If someone from your past is threatening you—"
"No," she said too quickly.
Adrian leaned forward, studying her reaction carefully. "You hesitated."
"I didn’t," she whispered.
He didn’t argue. He didn’t push.
But the way his eyes softened told her he didn’t believe her entirely.
"Elena," he said again, his voice gentler. "I don’t need all your secrets. But I need to know if the danger my father sees is real."
Her pulse raced.
Danger.
Secrets.
Revenge.
Truths she wasn’t ready to speak.
Not yet.
"Elena," he murmured, "talk to me."
"I can’t," she finally whispered.
Adrian exhaled heavily, leaning back, dragging a hand through his damp hair.
Then he surprised her.
He didn’t get angry.
He didn’t get cold.
He didn’t accuse her.
Instead, he reached out and gently took her hand — something he had never done before without intention.
His grip was warm.
Strong.
Steady.
"Elena," he said softly, "whatever this is... you don’t have to face it alone."
Her heart ached.
Because a part of her — the part she had been burying since the beginning — wanted so badly to believe that.
Wanted to lean into him.
Wanted to trust him.
But trust was dangerous.
Revealing the truth was dangerous.
Getting attached was the most dangerous of all.
She slowly pulled her hand away.
Adrian didn’t force it back.
He simply watched her, disappointment flickering in his eyes but something like understanding settling there too.
"Elena," he murmured, voice low, "just promise me one thing."
Her chest tightened.
"Promise me," Adrian whispered, "that when your secrets catch up to you... you’ll come to me before you let anyone else hurt you."
Elena’s throat tightened painfully.
Because she knew.
Her secrets would catch up to her.
Lydia’s trauma.
The Kanes’ involvement.
The truth she carried like a burning weight in her chest.
And when it happened... Adrian would be the first person affected.
She didn’t know if she was protecting herself...
or protecting him.
"I can’t make promises I’m not sure I can keep," she finally whispered.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly, something like pain crossing his face.
Then he stood.
When he spoke again, his voice was quiet but steady — full of a truth she wasn’t ready to face.
"Elena... I don’t know what you’re hiding. But I know this much."
He paused.
"When the time comes, I won’t let anyone take you from me."
She froze.
Because the way he said it — possessive, determined, yet vulnerable beneath it — made it clear:
This wasn’t just a contract anymore.
This wasn’t just a marriage of convenience.
This wasn’t just obsession or lust.
He was choosing her.
Even against his own family.
And that scared her more than anything her past ever could.
Adrian started to walk away.
But before leaving the balcony, he turned back one last time.
"Elena," he said softly, "don’t shut me out. Not now. Not when I’m trying my hardest not to lose you."
Then he walked away, leaving Elena alone — with her heartbeat echoing too loudly, her secrets suffocating her, and her emotions tearing her apart.
This time...
it wasn’t Adrian who couldn’t sleep.
It was Elena.
Because falling for him was never part of the plan.
And yet...
she could feel the ground shifting beneath her feet.
The dangerous beginning of something she couldn’t stop.
Even if she wanted to.
