Chapter 242: Megan manipulated the report.

Gustave stepped into Augustine’s office, his face dark with concern.

Augustine looked up immediately. "I was just about to call you," he said with urgency in his voice. "Any update on Oliver? And the officer from the original kidnapping case? Have you found anything?"

"No...we are still looking for the officer. But I’ve got news about Oliver." Gustave set a file down on the table. "But there is something more pressing, you are not going to like it." freewёbnoνel-com

He paused briefly. "Megan Granet met with the doctor who handled the paternity test."

Augustine’s eyes narrowed, instantly picking up on the implications.

"And that doctor," Gustave went on, "submitted his resignation just yesterday. Says he is moving abroad. His flight details are in the file." He nodded at the file. "It smells like tampering. I’m almost certain Megan manipulated the report."

Augustine flipped open the file, scanning through the documents with a calm but steely focus.

"And that’s not all," Gustave added grimly. "Nathan went to a private clinic to run the test again. The new report is due today. But Megan was seen outside the clinic early this morning. I think she is already making moves to interfere again."

Augustine kept reading, his expression unreadable.

"What are your orders? Do I bring Megan in for questioning?"

Augustine didn’t respond right away. Instead, he kept flipping through the file. "What did you find on Oliver?"

Gustave blinked, caught slightly off guard. He had been expecting an order about Megan, not a pivot to Oliver.

"His record is clean," Gustave began. "Professionally, he is solid—no dirt, no questionable ties. He is focused on his work. But his personal life... that’s where it gets messy."

He paused, watching Augustine’s expression.

"His marriage was troubled from the start. After Raya’s kidnapping, things went downhill fast. Eventually, they separated."

Augustine’s brow furrowed as he flipped to a new page and caught a name that made his eyes pause. "And this man... Oliver’s brother?"

"Hugo," Gustave confirmed. "Half-brother. The two of them never got along. Rumor is, Hugo had a suspiciously close relationship with Margaret. Some say it was the reason behind the divorce. But nothing concrete. No proof Margaret was unfaithful."

Augustine turned the page, searching for more about Hugo. But the report was thin, with barely any detail.

"Hugo was in jail for twelve years," Gustave said, filling in the silence. "Convicted of property damage and money laundering. Oliver pushed hard during the trial, using every legal avenue to make sure Hugo got the harshest penalty. Since then, Hugo has been off the radar. No known contact with Oliver or the rest of the family. As far as records go, the man is a ghost now."

"That’s it?" Augustine asked quietly, disappointment lining his voice. He had hoped the report would reveal something—some hidden truth of the Granet family. But it offered nothing solid.

For a moment, his suspicion drifted toward Hugo. The estranged half-brother, locked away for over a decade, bitter and cut off, seemed like a possible threat. But Raya’s kidnapping had happened while Hugo was still behind bars. Could someone orchestrate something like that from prison?

It seemed unlikely.

His thoughts circled back to Oliver. But again, it didn’t make sense. Even with a troubled marriage, what kind of father would go so far as to harm his own child?

His rational mind rejected the idea.

Gustave spoke up again, more firmly this time. "What about Megan? Should I move in on her?"

Augustine shook his head. "Not yet. We need solid proof first. Any sudden move might alert the real enemy. Keep watching her. Log everything."

He believed Anne would remain out of harm’s way as long as she stayed far from the Granet family drama. For now, he would dig into their secrets quietly. Megan was a piece on the board, but he wasn’t ready to flip it just yet.

Gustave didn’t understand the hesitation. To him, exposing Megan now could help Anne reunite her family. But he didn’t question Augustine’s call. He knew his boss rarely acted without reason.

"Understood," Gustave said with a curt nod. "I’ll start with the doctors."

He grabbed the file and left the room.

Augustine leaned back in his chair, his mind churning.

"Hugo," he muttered under his breath. "Did you really vanish from their lives... or are you just hiding in the shadows, pulling the strings?"

Later that day...

Anne wrapped up her work and began gathering her things, ready to head home. Before leaving, she thought she’d stop by Augustine’s office to check in on him. As she stood and picked up her phone, it suddenly buzzed in her hand.

Audrey’s name lit up on the screen.

A smile tugged at Anne’s lips. She realized how caught up she’d been in her own problems since returning from the honeymoon, so much so that she hadn’t had a chance to call Audrey.

"Hello?" she answered the call cheerfully.

"Anne," came Audrey’s voice, quiet and weary, drained of its usual spark. "I heard you were back. Can we meet?"

Anne’s brows furrowed instantly, alarmed by the flatness in her friend’s tone. The smile on her face was gone. "Of course.

"I need a drink," Audrey added before Anne could ask what was wrong. "Meet me at Moon’s Bar. I want to get drunk tonight."

The heaviness in her words struck Anne like a warning bell. She could feel it in her gut. Something was wrong with Audrey.

"Alright. I’ll be there."

After ending the call, Anne quickly texted Augustine: ’I’m meeting Audrey at the bar. I am heading out now. See you tonight.’

His response came a few minutes later: ’Alright, but don’t drink. Make sure Sam stays with you.’

Anne smiled to herself at his usual protective tone. She replied: ’I’m just meeting a friend, not sneaking off to a battlefield. I’ll be fine. No need for Sam.’

With that, she slipped her phone into her bag and headed out. But just as she reached the elevator, she froze. Her grip on her bag tightened, and a sour taste rose in her mouth.

Megan was walking toward her, wearing a smug expression that Anne had come to recognize all too well.

"Well, well... Anne," Megan said with mock sweetness. "Feeling let down? Did you really think getting close to Nathan would be enough to worm your way into the Granet family? It’s not that simple. Reports don’t lie."

Anne didn’t care about it anymore. The desire to be accepted by the Granet family had died the moment Margaret hurled accusations and treated her so harshly. She had her own family now—Augustine and the baby. That was all she needed.

"I’m actually relieved I’m not part of a family that includes someone as venomous as you," Anne retaliated. "Honestly, I’m lucky. God did me a favor. I want nothing to do with the Granets."

She brushed past Megan, deliberately bumping her shoulder as she stepped into the elevator.

Megan spun around, her face twisting in rage, ready to spit out another insult. But the elevator doors were already closing. Through the narrowing gap, she caught a final glimpse of Anne smirking, waving mockingly.

"You—" Megan seethed, but the doors sealed shut.

She stomped her foot, burning with frustration.
