Chapter 60: Eloise & The Princess

We made our way down the corridor to a door. This was her bedchamber. I looked to both sides, the wind howling through, and this place looked more graveyard than a graveyard did.

I cleared my throat and knocked, the mere sound echoing through the air. It took minutes before the door was answered and the princess’s handmaid stepped forward.

"Can I help you?"

"Is that the way to act toward the monarch’s wife?" Lucan said, leaning against the wall, his face down to hers.

The handmaid got intimidated. "Sir Lucan," she greeted before looking over to me and bowing. "Is there anything I can do for you?"

"I want to see the princess."

"What?" she gasped. "Um...Why?"

"I believe the fault lies with me," I began in a solemn tone. "Ever since I arrived in the empire, I have neglected my duty to see her."

"I assure you, my lady, the princess takes no offense; she understands."

"Odd, I thought I might have offended her."

"Definitely not—"

"She’s my sister-in-law. I want to invite her to brunch or perhaps a walk in the gardens, so that we can get to know each other."

"I don’t think that’s—"

"Lina," A firm voice came from inside.

The handmaid, now named Lina, tensed. "Your Highness?"

"Let the human in."

"O-Of course, Your Highness."

"Alone."

I gulped at the princess’s last word.

"Your Grace," Lucan said. "I have to disagree."

"It’s alright," I said, stepping into the room, and the door slammed shut behind me.

I released a sharp breath, closing my eyes, steeling myself for what was to come. When I opened them, I was met with a far more colorful room.

Dare I say more lavish than the monarch? The monarch’s room had a simple yet elegant aesthetic, but it looked like a fairy had sprinkled her dust here, with most of the wealth of the royal family poured in.

That familiar gaze of someone watching me seized my body, the hairs at the back of my head standing on alert.

I turned, my earrings dangling, and my lashes fluttering when I set my eyes on the majestic bed. There were red drapes around it, thicker, but I could see a shadow within.

Princess Diana.

"Your Highness," I curtsied.

"What do you want?" she asked bluntly.

I raised an eyebrow. Her voice seemed forced, almost like she was trying to add more volume to make it sound more mature.

"My intentions are clear, Your Highness," I said with a smile curling on my lips. "I have come to invite you to brunch."

"How simple-minded of you to think I would join a human for a useless activity."

She’s her mother’s daughter, alright. I knew she thought of humans as cockroaches, too.

"Yes, I’m simple-minded to think that you’d join me for brunch. I’m a big fool to even attempt such."

"W-What?"

I smirked internally and then continued with my sad tone. "The monarch has left the castle for his shift. His absence has suddenly reminded me of something I have neglected this entire time." I lifted my gaze so that she could see my eyes. "I have a sister, one I haven’t taken any effort to know."

"N-Nonsense! How dare you consider me as such?"

I froze. Wait...that tone was lighter, and I recalled hearing it somewhere. Odd.

Princess Diana cleared her throat as if to compose herself. "If you think you can come here and invite me to something so ridiculous without me noticing you’ve some ulterior motive, then I’m afraid you have lost a part of your brain."

"Ulterior motive?" I asked innocently. "Whatever do you mean?"

I should be careful...she might see through me and decide to unleash her Alpha command. But to my surprise, she did nothing of the such.

"Leave. I’ll not tolerate any more of your presence, and don’t think you can come back here. I’ll not receive you."

I smirked. Time to work it out.

"Do you by chance not want to spend time with me because of the Dowager?"

"The D-Dowager has nothing to do with this."

"But..." I paused. "Forgive me, I shouldn’t interfere. I’m just a stranger to you, a lowlife no less."

Using my stepsister’s tricks made my skin crawl but it was necessary. Fiona was always the kind to act innocently even when under fire. I should be thankful for her tricks all these years, I learned a thing or two.

"It’s clear you’ve got something on your mind. I order you to speak!"

I exhaled sharply. "It’s unfortunate the Dowager has confined you here. When I heard the news...I was hurt."

That was me being truthful. I couldn’t understand why she was left alone here while the rest of the world moved.

I stepped closer.

"Don’t!" she warned.

"Apologies," I said.

Silence passed between us, a long, excruciating one.

"Fine, I shall have brunch with you."

That was easy.

"But through my handmaid. She has been with me for a long time and understands me better than anyone. She shall represent me, and I can find out why you so dutifully want to spend time with me."

The Princess is smart, I’ll give her that. If I were in her shoes, I would suspect the sudden appearance of her brother’s wife, too.

I have no intention of dragging this on for long. I’ll be honest with her during brunch.

"I shall expect Lina soon?"

The Princess chuckled. "Who said I was talking about Lina?"

She has another handmaid?

"Dia shall be the one I choose," she amused.

Dia?! That little brat? Oh no!

My face went pale. She was the princess’s handmaid all along! This might prove to be a challenging brunch.

"O-Of course, Your Highness," I bowed and hurriedly walked to the door, and it opened on my account.

I didn’t waste any time as I trekked the corridors with my company behind me.

"How did it go, Your Grace?" Osha asked.

"She agreed."

"R-Really?"

This just took a drastic turn...for the worse.
