Chapter 55: Missing You Softly

Lucan swallowed down his mouthful. "The monarch was worried; never seen him that way before." He tipped his head. "He’s usually not, not until you came into his life." freewёbnoνel.com

"W-Worried about what?"

"It was hard to follow before he ordered me to go guard you."

I rest my arms on the table. "Just tell me what you remember?"

"Well, um..." he trailed, eyeing the pastries.

I rolled my eyes. "Go on."

He smiled and rushed through another plate.

I placed my hand on my cheek, glaring at him. Just when I thought he would take forever to give me what I wanted, he finally talked.

"He wasn’t specific to Garrick, but he mentioned something about hurting you."

Hurting me?

"And losing control."

Oh. I thought about his canines and the sting in my mouth. Wait, was he worried about that?

"He needs to shift, too."

"Shift?"

Lucan nodded. "Yes, don’t you know what that means?"

I placed a hand under my chin, and then the fruition hit me. He means shifting into his beast form.

"It’s been a long time since the monarch did."

"Why? I thought Lycans occasionally do so."

"Well, in the monarch’s case, it’s different. He’s an Alpha; the process disturbs the balance."

"Balance?"

I narrowed my eyes in confusion. Now he’s not making any sense. I’m beginning to think the books we had on Lycans had little to no information, and Lucan wasn’t being clear with his words.

"You certainly do not want to see an Alpha in its beast form, they rarely shift and when they do..." He shivered as if recalling something chilling.

I gulped. "What about you?"

"I shift all the time. If we don’t, it becomes harder to maintain this form," he said, observing his hand like it was something alien to him.

His action made me realize something terrifying at that moment, something I never considered until now. This form that looked human was their disguise.

They were beasts in human skin, maybe maintaining this form was required.

I had spent so much time with them and became familiar with this form. That attack was a little reminder of what my new reality was. But this? It felt like I was in a dark, dark place, and I’m the only one existing.

"Your Grace? Are you alright?" Lucan asked worriedly when he noticed my change of mood. "Do not worry, you’ll see the monarch soon. It might take days, though."

"D-Days?"

"The look on his face told me that. I have seen that look on the battlefield, the look of seclusion."

Does this mean he needed space?

"How the monarch acts toward you is unfamiliar to us, given his usual countenance. I have never seen that side of him before."

I blushed at his words, even though this got me all melting inside, it made me wonder what kind of person Drevon was to others. Is he truly different with me?

"Ever since that day at Beloria..." he chuckled. "My Alpha has been charmed."

"Go on, eat this before I change my mind," I said, hoping to divert his attention before my face exploded.

Lucan was happy to do so, consuming the entire plate of pastries.

I got a little relief after hearing about Drevon, but his idea of seclusion was like a sting to my heart. How dare he touch me in such a way and decide he needed some time to himself?

He’s stupidly worried about hurting me when he has done nothing of the sort.

Is he truly going to isolate himself because of it?

~•~

I got the answer to my question when yet another night passed with no Drevon in sight. And to make things clear, I do not miss him! I’m just...annoyed that he chose seclusion after what happened.

Was the intimacy between us unappealing to him?

I huffed loudly, so loudly it caught Osha’s attention.

"Y-Your Grace?"

I set my hands on my waist, pacing. "If that is the reason, then he should rot away wherever he is!"

"W-Who are you talking about?"

"How stupid of me to think he was attracted to me. I know I’m skinny and his tastes are far from someone like me, but I’m a woman too." I faced Osha with my aggressive eyes, and she became anxious.

"Osha!"

"Yes, Y-Your Grace!"

"Don’t I look woman enough?"

"Of course you’re—"

"Be honest and don’t say that to please or else I’ll get offended."

"Well..." she trailed, scrutinizing me from head to toe. "Your breasts are a good size."

"You think so?" I said, placing my hands on them.

"And your hips," Osha said, placing a hand beneath her chin, nodding her head in approval. "Good hips."

Gods! I love this girl.

"Then I see no reason why the monarch isn’t attracted to me. Even Lucan says it all the time that he hasn’t been himself ever since he met me," I said cockily, but mostly relieved that doubt was cleared, I think?

I had no idea why I was suddenly insecure. But how could I not be? He was a gentleman who should only exist in a daydream, modeled by their goddess like a god.

"Your G-Grace?"

"I’m just the sickly girl he happened to take an interest in. Why would he want my heart?" I grumbled.

The bushes beside us suddenly rustled. That familiar feeling of being watched grasped me, and I quickly veered my gaze to that area. However, Osha was steadfast and stepped in front of me.

"Show yourself!" she demanded.

"Believe me, I wonder too."

That voice was familiar, the bush moved, and that same girl I met a day ago emerged, leaves and little twigs sticking to her hair, but she thought it was a good idea to stand proud and stare at me like I was the dirt beneath her shoe.

"Well, if it isn’t..." I paused. I didn’t catch her name before.

"Dia—" she stopped her words as if thinking through it. "Dia!"
