Chapter 42: The Silent Ride

[Few Hours Later]

Darkness came first, not the frightening kind, no edges, no weight. Just warmth and stillness, like floating beneath deep water.

Lyra stirred slowly and her first awareness was sensation.

She felt the strong arms around her and the steady rise and fall beneath her cheek.

Her fingers flexed and brushed against fabric, then skin.

She froze as memory rushed in all at once.

The office, the pain, the fear and then the man with silver eyes and rage in his presence—

Kaelen.

Lyra opened her eyes wide,

The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of city lights bleeding through floor-to-ceiling windows. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

For a second, she didn’t recognize where she was.

Then she felt him.

Kaelen lay behind her on the couch, with one arm securely around her waist and his chest pressed to her back like he had built himself around her without realizing it. His breathing was deep and even, warm against her neck.

He was asleep and he was holding her like she was something precious.

Her chest tightened.

This was wrong, it had to be and yet she had never felt safer in her life.

The strange pressure she had lived with for days was gone. In its place was something softer, fuller like a missing piece had finally clicked into place.

Lyra shifted slightly, testing the moment.

Kaelen’s arm tightened immediately, instinctive, protective and a soft sound left her throat before she could stop it.

His brow furrowed and then his eyes opened and silver met brown in the low light.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Neither of them moved.

Kaelen was the first to breathe.

"You are awake," he said quietly, his voice rough with sleep and something else she couldn’t name.

Lyra nodded. "I—yeah."

His gaze searched her face, slow and careful. "How do you feel?"

She considered the question honestly.

"Calm," she said softly. "But it also feels a little strange."

Something flickered in his eyes. It was relief, wonder and fear but it was gone before she could name it.

He didn’t let go neither did she.

They stayed like that, tangled together in the quiet, as if time had paused out of respect.

Eventually, Lyra’s gaze drifted past him to the wall clock across the room. When she saw the time, her eyes widened.

"Oh no," she whispered, pushing herself upright slightly. "It’s late. I have to go home."

Kaelen frowned. "Lyra—"

"My uncle," she said quickly. "He must be out of his mind by now. I didn’t inform him, he doesn’t know where I am."

She tried to pull away but his arm tightened, gentle but immovable.

"I will take you home," Kaelen said, already sitting up.

She shook her head. "You don’t have to—"

"I know," he interrupted quietly. "But I will."

Lyra hesitated. "Kaelen—"

He met her gaze, calm but unyielding.

"I am not giving you a chance to argue," he said. "Not tonight."

Something in his tone made her stop and not argue.

Lyra exhaled slowly and nodded. "Okay."

Kaelen rose, offering her his hand and she took it without thinking.

And when he helped her to her feet, the last thing either of them noticed was that neither had let go.

....

[Outside the Office]

They stepped out of Kaelen’s office into the quiet corridor and the moment Lyra crossed the threshold, she saw him.

Rogan.

He was standing near the far wall with Varyn and Riven with his posture rigid and eyes fixed on her like he had been holding himself together by sheer will alone.

The instant he saw her upright, breathing, alive, he moved.

"Lyra."

He was in front of her in two strides, his hands hovering as if he didn’t quite know where to touch her. His eyes searched her face, sharp and frantic. "Are you okay?"

Lyra blinked, surprised to see him there at all. "I—" She nodded. "Yes. I am okay."

Rogan exhaled, the sound shaky despite his effort to control it.

His gaze flicked briefly to Kaelen.

The Alpha stood a step behind her, composed, unreadable.

Rogan looked away immediately.

"Let’s go home," he said to Lyra, his voice firm, final.

Lyra hesitated, then nodded. "Okay."

Before Rogan could turn, Kaelen spoke.

"I will take you."

Rogan stiffened but didn’t respond.

Riven cleared his throat. "Kaelen, you should rest."

"I am fine," Kaelen replied calmly. Too calmly. "Get the car ready."

One of the nearby guards moved at once.

Varyn studied Kaelen for a moment longer than necessary, then spoke quietly, "Take Riven with you."

Kaelen inclined his head. "I can handle it."

"And I am not doubting you," Varyn answered. "But I still want you to take Riven with you."

And this time, Kaelen did not argue.

....

The ride was silence wrapped in tension.

Riven drove and Kaelen sat in the passenger seat, his posture relaxed but his jaw set, eyes fixed on the road ahead.

In the back seat, Lyra sat beside Rogan, her hands folded in her lap. Rogan’s knee bounced once before he stilled it, his attention split between her and the window.

No one spoke.

The city passed by in streaks of light.

When the car finally slowed and pulled to a stop outside Seraphina’s place, Rogan opened the door without a word.

Lyra paused, glancing forward once.

Kaelen didn’t turn.

"Thank you," she said softly.

His fingers tightened briefly against his thigh. "Get some rest."

She nodded and stepped out.

Rogan followed, closing the door behind them without looking back and the car pulled away moments later.

Only when they were several blocks away did Kaelen speak.

"Any word from Heather?"

Riven kept his eyes on the road. "Not yet but she has Javier’s scent. When she finds him, she will move fast."

Kaelen leaned back, closing his eyes for a brief second.

"Let me know the moment she does."

"You will be the first to know," Riven said quietly.

Silence settled again but this time, it was sharper because whatever had begun tonight was no longer contained to one building, one curse or one girl.

It was moving and none of them could pretend otherwise anymore.
