Make France Great Again-Chapter 785 - 776 Count Algou’s Revival Race
The four people present exchanged glances with each other, but no one spoke the first word.
Seeing no one speaking, Jerome Bonaparte pointed his finger at Minister of State Fuld. He slowly opened his mouth to ask Fuld, "Fuld! As the Minister of State, why don’t you speak first!"
Fuld stood up and, after a moment of silence, replied, "Your Majesty, I believe this issue should be discussed extensively before we can choose the appropriate personnel!"
"Fuld, I don’t want to ask about others. I just want to know who your choice is!" Jerome Bonaparte emphasized.
"Your Majesty!" Fuld bowed to Jerome Bonaparte and slowly began, "If you insist on me choosing a suitable candidate, I think..."
Fuld turned his gaze to Count Algou, and in the midst of Algo’s astonishment, said, "Your Majesty, I choose Count Algou for the role of representative!"
As soon as this was said, Jerome Bonaparte and the other three were momentarily stunned.
Although Jerome Bonaparte did indeed intend for Count Algou to serve as France’s representative to the European Currency Union, he had not told Fuld.
By ordinary logic, Fuld should recommend someone from their own camp.
Even if not Mane and Bemini, it should be the Pereire Brothers.
Recommending someone from an opposing camp was truly unexpected for him.
"Explain your reasoning!" Jerome Bonaparte’s lips curled into an intrigued smile as he gently tapped the armrest of the throne with his right hand.
"Your Majesty, the European Currency Union is an organization facing all of Europe, so its representative should be someone who is famous internationally.
In France, there are only a few who meet this criterion, and Count Algou is one of them!" Fuld said to Jerome Bonaparte.
"This reason..." Jerome Bonaparte deliberately paused for a moment, then slowly nodded and said, "It’s quite sufficient! You may sit down again!"
"Yes!" Fuld sat back down in his seat.
Then Jerome Bonaparte turned his gaze to Mane while pointing at Bemini: "President Bemini, do you have any differing opinions?"
Bemini hurriedly stood up to respond to Jerome Bonaparte, "Your Majesty, I think Minister Fuld is not wrong! Count Algou is indeed the most suitable in all of France!"
"Alright! I understand!" Jerome Bonaparte nodded, and then inquired Mane’s opinion.
Mane, like Fuld and Bemini, also recommended Count Algou.
"Mr. Algou, what do you think?" Jerome Bonaparte asked Count Algou.
"Your Majesty!" Count Algou slowly stood up, and Jerome Bonaparte immediately said to Count Algou, "Mr. Algou, you may as well speak while sitting!"
"Thank you, Your Majesty!" Count Algou sat back in his chair and replied to Jerome Bonaparte, "For Minister Fuld, Minister Mane, and President Bemini to recommend me as a representative, I am truly grateful. However, I am quite aged, and fear I might find it hard to fulfill this role.
So I recommend Baron James Rothschild as the French representative for this currency union. Their bank branches are spread throughout Europe, and they have partnerships with the major banks in Europe.
If he were to be the representative, it would certainly yield great results with little effort!"
Not willing to hide anything, is he? Jerome Bonaparte couldn’t help but inwardly remark.
Everyone in France knows the past troubles with Rothschild, and even if he and Rothschild have reconciled, he won’t let Rothschild get involved in such a significant event as the European Currency Union.
Count Algou proposed someone who could never be appointed, just to indirectly tell Jerome Bonaparte that he himself is capable.
"I understand!" Jerome Bonaparte nodded expressionlessly and then gave the order for all four to leave the Imperial Council.
After the four people left the meeting place, Count Algou called out to Fuld.
"Minister Fuld, please wait a moment!" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Fuld slowly stopped his steps and smiled while asking Count Algou, "Mr. Earl, is there something you wish to discuss with me?"
"Minister Fuld, I wonder if you have time to visit my humble abode! I wish to host a banquet for all of you!" Count Algou extended an invitation with a smile as well.
Upon hearing this, Fuld shook his head and said, "Mr. Algou, perhaps not! I’m afraid I don’t have time!"
Fuld’s candid reply left Count Algou somewhat annoyed. However, he still needed their support at the moment.
Thus, Count Algou regretfully replied to Fuld, "Since Minister Fuld doesn’t have the time, then let’s forget it!
I still wanted to have a good exchange with Minister Fuld!"
"Count Algou!" Minister Fuld said sternly to Count Algou, "If there’s nothing else, I will take my leave first."
"Hmm!" Count Algou nodded in response.
When Fuld re-entered his carriage, he unexpectedly found Mane and Bemini inside. He quickly closed the door and asked them in a low voice, "What are you doing here!"
Having said that, Fuld gave the order for the carriage to depart.
Fuld’s carriage slowly left the Tuileries Palace, and once it reached the gardens of the Tuileries Palace, Fuld asked again why they were in his carriage.
Mane said they wanted to have a chat with Fuld.
"You want to ask why I support Algou as a representative, right?" Fuld said blandly.
"That’s right!" Mane nodded and replied, "Didn’t we agree before to elect Mr. Isaac Pereire as the French representative? Why did you suddenly change at the Imperial Council?"
"Haven’t you figured it out yet!" Fuld looked at Mane in surprise, seemingly unable to believe the intelligence of his political ally.
"Figure out what?" Mane was puzzled at first, then suddenly realized the issue: "You mean to say that His Majesty is already planning to let Count Algou be the representative!"
"Besides that reason, I really don’t know why Count Algou is here!" Fuld shrugged and replied to the two in the carriage.
"Wasn’t this meeting supposed to be for all the bankers!" Bemini asked Fuld in confusion, "It seems like there’s no problem for Count Algou to be summoned with us!"
"Indeed, it’s for all bankers!" Fuld affirmed Bemini’s thought and continued, "But have you two thought about it! Why did His Majesty summon us together with Count Algou when our relationship with him is already adversarial?"
"You mean His Majesty did it on purpose!" Mane said to Fuld and then posed a question, "Why would he do that?"
Fuld shook his head and replied to Mane, "I am not entirely sure of His Majesty’s intentions! However, I can assure you that Count Algou serving as the French representative is a sure thing!"
"So what should we do now? Should we try to make peace with Count Algou?" Bemini asked Fuld.
"No need?" Fuld shook his head and explained to Bemini and Mane, "We and Count Algou are not on the same path; rashly making peace will only increase His Majesty’s critical view of us!"
"Then what should we do now?" Mane asked Fuld again.
"Let’s take it as it comes!" Fuld responded calmly, "Even if Algou serves as the French representative, he cannot threaten our position! It would be better to think about how to smoothly navigate the economic challenges ahead!"
...
Meanwhile, at the Tuileries Palace, Jerome Bonaparte also received news about Mane and Bemini being in Fuld’s carriage.
"What do you think this Fuld is up to!" Jerome Bonaparte asked Mokar beside him with a puzzled tone.
"Your Majesty, I have no idea!" Mokar replied to Jerome Bonaparte.
"Forget it!" Jerome Bonaparte shook his head to himself, "Asking you is pointless! Quickly call the next group in for me!"
"Yes!" Mokar hurried away.
An hour later, another group of bankers appeared before Jerome Bonaparte, and as usual, Jerome Bonaparte asked them who should host the currency union and serve as the French representative.
The bankers unanimously chose Jerome Bonaparte to host the event, but there was a split regarding the representative, with some choosing the Pereire Brothers and others selecting Minister Fuld.
When Jerome Bonaparte asked the next group of bankers, they made different choices from the previous group, including Bank of France President Bemini, Baron James Rothschild, and Minister of Finance Mane.
Jerome Bonaparte continued asking until evening when he finally stopped.
When he summarized the candidates, he found the most favored were Minister of State Fuld and Isaac Pereire, followed by Mane, and finally Count Algou and Baron James Rothschild.
It seems that without the backing of power, Count Algou’s status could only fall into the sequence of other bankers.
Early the next morning, Jerome Bonaparte gave Mokar orders to invite Count Algou to the Tuileries Palace.
After Count Algou arrived, Jerome Bonaparte directly asked him what he thought of the European Currency Union.
Count Algou once again gave a positive opinion on Jerome Bonaparte’s idea of forming the European Currency Union.
He believed it would benefit the French Empire’s commodity circulation and promote France’s long-term development.
"Then, do you, as a great banker, think we should continue using the bimetallic standard or adopt the gold standard!"
