Chapter 90: Chapter 90: He is an Abnormal Pupil

Evelyn Ford first forced her dislocated bone back into place. The pain brought tears to her eyes. After catching her breath for a moment, she slowly approached the man, but she didn’t let her guard down. She held a dagger in one hand, pressing it firmly against the man’s neck. With the other, she pushed aside his long, messy hair. Seeing the dirt on his face, Evelyn roughly pried his eyelids open.

He really was an Abnormal Pupil. One eye was blue, the other red.

Evelyn stared at the unconscious man, her feelings complicated. In her past life, she had heard many legends about the Abnormal Pupils. While she couldn’t be sure if the one captured by the base was this man, his earlier actions proved that Abnormal Pupils were indeed not ordinary people.

Evelyn got up and searched the mountain forest, eventually finding a giant pit. She returned to the Abnormal Pupil’s side and hauled him up.

Evelyn dragged him for over a hundred meters to the edge of the pit. She took out the last of her poison from her space, forced his mouth open, and poured it in before unceremoniously dumping him into the chasm.

To cover her tracks, Evelyn erased her footprints. She went back to where they had fought, picked up her crossbow, gun, and dagger, and ran quickly toward her cabin.

Back at the cabin, Evelyn clutched her chest, panting heavily. When Mina and Lola came over, she was in no mood to play with them. Instead, she bolted all the doors and windows, took out some medicinal herbs from her space, and prepared to make more poison.

The arm he had twisted still ached. Evelyn soaked a towel in hot water and quickly applied it as a compress.

Although she had set it back herself, the dislocated joint had already started to swell.

’He’s so brutal. Though I’m not much better. But this was the first time Evelyn had faced such a terrifying opponent, and it left her deeply unsettled.’

Evelyn had saltpeter in her space and planned to make some gunpowder. Gunpowder, a mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal in the right proportions, wasn’t as powerful as modern explosives, but it was more than enough to kill a man.

Evelyn suspected the Abnormal Pupil had come from the karst cave. She had entered the cave that day and accidentally set him free. Evelyn felt a pang of regret. If she’d known it would cause so much trouble, she wouldn’t have been so curious.

Mina and Lola watched the anxious Evelyn with curiosity. The two little critters wisely kept their distance.

To think something like this would happen on the first day of the new year. That night, she slept fitfully. Just before dawn, she finally managed to fall asleep, only to be plunged into a nightmare.

In her dream, the Abnormal Pupil she’d thrown into the pit climbed out, covered in blood, and crawled to her cabin. He strangled Mina and Lola, and in the next second, reached his filthy hands toward her.

Evelyn woke with a start. Seeing her familiar room, her heart finally settled. ’That man... he should be dead, right?’

The gunpowder wasn’t ready yet, but she had brewed a pot of poison. Even if he wasn’t dead, if he dared to come, Evelyn would make sure it was a one-way trip.

Evelyn hung her binoculars around her neck. At the slightest sound from outside, she was instantly on high alert.

One day, two days, three days... All was peaceful.

Evelyn was certain the man had been poisoned to death. Although she felt she had been a bit cruel, she was also immensely relieved that he was dead.

"Mina, Lola, I’ve been too busy these past few days and haven’t had time for you. Let’s watch some TV together today."

Evelyn took out her tablet and played Mina’s favorite cartoon.

Outside the window, snow fell thick and fast. Inside the cabin, all was quiet and peaceful.

Meanwhile, in the giant pit in the forest, the man opened his eyes and stared blankly at his surroundings.

On the fifth day of the new year, the snow finally stopped for a change. Evelyn planned to process the cowhide. Cowhide was excellent for insulation and very durable, perfect for making shoes.

Evelyn hung up the cowhide, took out a blowtorch, and began singeing off the fur.

Mina was very curious. Whatever Evelyn did, it had to come over and join in. Evelyn would shoo it away, but it would just come right back.

"If you bother me again, I’ll burn your tail off and turn you into a bald squirrel."

Mina understood the threat in her eyes and didn’t dare to approach again.

Evelyn grunted in satisfaction and continued singeing the cowhide.

"SQUEAK... SQUEAK..."

"What is it now? Can you be quiet for a bit? I’m busy. I’ll play with you later."

"SQUEAK... SQUEAK..."

Mina’s squeaking grew frantic. Seeing its fur stand on end, Evelyn sensed something was wrong and looked out past the fence.

When she saw the man she had poisoned and thrown into a pit five days ago now standing outside her fence, Evelyn was dumbfounded.

But she was only stunned for a second. The next moment, Evelyn grabbed the crossbow hanging outside the cabin and fired a bolt straight at him.

However, not only did he catch her bolt again, but he also leaped directly into her yard and began walking toward her, step by step.

"Stop! Don’t come any closer."

Evelyn shouted. She had seen it clearly: when the man leaped, he had jumped nearly four or five meters high.

Evelyn was again certain he wasn’t human. She picked up the blowtorch and faced him.

"Who are you?"

The man tilted his head slightly but didn’t answer.

Evelyn ignited the blowtorch, sending a jet of flame high into the air. The man took a step back.

"Get out. Get out!"

"Hungry." He shook his head and, after a long moment, squeezed out that single word.

Evelyn thought she had misheard and blasted another jet of fire at him.

"Get out."

"Hungry."

Evelyn...

He began to slowly approach Evelyn. His posture was familiar; it seemed like he was about to start sniffing her again.

Evelyn suspected he wanted to eat her and brandished the blowtorch.

The next second, however, the man snatched up Mina, who was hiding in a corner. Evelyn once again witnessed his speed. It was as if a gust of wind blew past her, and he went from being in front of her to behind her in an instant.

"SQUEAK...!" Mina shrieked in terror, its tail shooting straight up and all its fur standing on end.

Lola was also terrified, sprawled motionless on the ground. Fearing he might suddenly eat Mina, Evelyn rushed to stand in front of him.

"Say again, what do you want?"

"Hungry." He turned his head to look at Evelyn, still repeating that one word.

Evelyn suppressed her anger and tried to soften her tone as much as possible.

"I have food. I can give you food. Will you give me back my pet?"

’She really couldn’t beat this monster. Knives and guns couldn’t kill him. What chance did a mere mortal like her stand against him?’

’When you’re outmatched, the most important thing is to know when to bend. Revenge is a dish best served cold.’

He ignored Evelyn and sat down directly on the doorstep, holding Mina in his lap and stroking its fur very roughly.

Evelyn quickly went inside, brought out a plate of leftover braised pork, and offered it to him.

"Here’s the food."

The man leaned in and sniffed it. Suddenly, with a gentle toss, he sent Mina flying in a perfect arc right into Evelyn’s arms.

Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief. She picked Lola up from the ground and locked both little critters in the bedroom.
