Chapter 127: Chapter 128: The Start of Debate 5

When the timer ended, Teacher Annie recounted the highlighted points of each speaker before moving on to the next.

"Moving to the fourth speaker of the affirmative side, the stage is all yours," she said with a smile.

Hearing that it was his turn to speak, Jeff smiled since for the moment he had been waiting for had finally come.

Looking at his opponent, his eyes shone when he realized it was Arianna Willow.

Seeing his expression, she gave him a sly smile that radiated an intoxicating charm, leaving their classmates mesmerized as they watched the scene.

"Don’t be too hard on me," she said as the two faced each other at the center.

"That depends," Jeff replied with a smile.

Since this was a competition, of course he would go hard on her, because the greatest respect you can show your opponent is by giving your all.

As the timer started, Jeff closed his eyes for a moment and recalled the constructed speech he had prepared.

When he opened them, his eyes shone brightly, and the surprising thing was that the golden hue that usually neutral, seemed to glow.

Arianna, who was facing him head-on, froze as her mind became fully occupied by his gaze.

Her heartbeat rapidly, not from fear of being crushed but from awe.

"Such beautiful eyes," she thought in amazement.

"Good day, my classmates. I’m Jeff, the fourth speaker for the retention side. Let me start with a simple image," he said in a standard Philippine English accent.

It was calm, filled with confidence, and carried a somewhat neutral tone. The reason he didn’t use a British accent, unlike when he explained the lesson in class days ago, was clear.

This was a debate in the Philippines, not in a foreign setting, so he needed to show national identity while remaining clear and formal.

This also helped him avoid any sense of ’foreignness penalty’ ,if such a thing existed, since his research suggested it could matter according to some studies.

Even though this kind of rule did not apply to the current debate, he still decided to follow it.

Cause according to the information he found, local judges and peers often evaluate fluency, enhanced by clarity more than accent conformity.

Also researchers showed that in local academic debates, clarity of structure and confidence make up 60–70% of scoring rubrics, while accent matters only if it affects comprehension.

By following this, he kept his delivery natural, preventing the impression of faking.

This was the best fit in front of local judges which is his teacher Annie and peers, since credibility comes from fluency and strength of argument, not mimicry.

And so, with a steady tone, he began.

"If a plant hasn’t reached full height, do we throw it away or do we water it?" He paused, leaving the audience with something to think about.

After a moment, he continued, "Of course we water it. K to 12 isn’t perfect, but it’s growing. Improve it, but don’t remove it."

"So for now I stood here in front of the class to address the previous statements from the other side,"

"The previous speaker argued that K to 12 is unfair because families can’t afford two more years of uniforms, projects, and transportation. But the reality is, the system already has support-built in."

"According to DepEd, the Senior High School Voucher Program covers over 1.2 million students every year. Instead of scrapping the program, the solution is to expand these subsidies and provide transport stipends. Removing K to 12 won’t erase costs, it will only erase opportunities."

"Another is about the cited JobStreet 2019 survey claiming about 35% of SHS graduates are unemployed or working outside their strand. But that survey only covered a small group of online jobseekers from what my previous member had said. By contrast, DepEd and TESDA data represent millions nationwide. TESDA’s 2019 tracer study shows that 85% of NC-certified SHS graduates found jobs within a year. That is far more credible evidence. One limited survey cannot outweigh official nationwide statistics."

"And about the previous speaker raising the issue of job mismatch. You do know that even DOLE reports that mismatch also affects college graduates worldwide. It is a labor market reality, not proof that K to 12 has failed. What K to 12 does is expand options"

"Such as higher education, technical-vocational work, or entrepreneurship. Even if a graduate shifts careers, they leave senior high with certifications and practical skills they never would have had under the old 10-year system."

"Another is about technical-vocational tracks only help if companies recognize them. The previous speaker is correct but that is not a reason to destroy the framework. It’s a reason to strengthen partnerships with industry. Government can require company co-signatures on SHS syllabi, expand apprenticeship programs, and ensure every certification is TESDA- and employer-recognized. That fixes the gap instead of throwing the whole structure away."

"So before K to 12, the Philippines was the last country in Asia with only 10 years of basic education. That left our graduates at a disadvantage abroad."

"And today, SHS aligns us with global standards, opening opportunities for scholarships, recognition, and mobility. To revert now would mean chaos, rewriting textbooks, confusing whole batches of students, and wasting years of progress."

"Classmates this a good reason why improvement beats erasure. Let’s protect students behind us and ahead of us."

"Retain K to 12, reform it relentlessly, and make it work. Improve it don’t remove it. That is all thank you,"

Jeff then stepped back from the limelight as he delivered his final words. The boys clapped loudly, impressed by the strength of his argument, especially with the statistics he presented.

All of his classmates were in awe, for he had brought no notes with him when he came up on stage.

It was pure memorization, and beyond that, he had even addressed the statements and main points of the previous speaker.

This was truly amazing, since not everyone could recall all the main points, much less add the right statistics to support them.

Even Teacher Annie was flabbergasted and who wouldn’t be, with Jeff’s tone, control, and above all, his confidence were reaching the roof.

"If only I had known Jeff had this much talent, I would have listed him in the Intramurals to represent the school. Too bad I realized it was too late," Annie said, shaking her head.
