Lucifer: Godless Reawakening-Chapter 275: Judgement
"Haaa..." Emma let out a deep breath as her vision shifted.
She saw William flying toward her. His hand was burned, the side of his face charred, yet he didn’t stop. He was desperate to reach her after seeing the state she had pushed herself into.
Her heart twisted at the sight.
She had nearly lost herself in the desire to save the Count. However, before tending to her lover, she decided to use these fleeting moments of divinity to finish what she had started.
She clenched her hand and grasped the burning trident of the heavens: Astalout.
The three fangs of the trident pointed toward the Count.
She gave one last glance to William, who still couldn’t see her, before descending toward Carter.
Ting
A metallic sound rang out as the trident pierced the man, making his body jerk violently.
For a moment, silence fell.
Then—
"Ahhhh!"
Carter cried out, his eyes widening as his body began breaking and mending at a terrifying pace.
William paused midair. The sudden disappearance of the divine light confused him, until he heard his father’s voice.
He turned and saw Emma standing above him.
A gentle light radiated from her, seeping into him.
He immediately flew back to the ground and rushed toward her. But the silver-haired woman quickly jumped back, avoiding him.
"No, wait. Not now... I will harm you—ah!"
She yelped in surprise as his telekinesis pulled her closer and William wrapped his arms around her despite the warning.
"To hell with that," he muttered, his charred arms tightening around her. "You scared me, Emma. I thought..."
He couldn’t bring himself to say the words.
Emma didn’t resist the embrace, even though she knew her presence was hurting him.
The glow surrounding her slowly faded as everything was absorbed by Carter, who recovered at a miraculous pace.
His complexion improved. His aether circuits repaired themselves, and his breathing stabilized.
No spell recorded in the Golden Book of Spells could accomplish such a feat, because what Emma had achieved went far beyond the reach of mortals.
Clinging to William tightly, Emma whispered, "I’m sorry... I shouldn’t have acted so rashly."
William said nothing. His heart had yet to settle after what she had done.
Emma knew her lover wouldn’t forgive her so easily.
But for now, they both chose to hold onto this moment, grateful that they were still together.
William soon turned and looked at his father.
"He should be better after a few days of rest. Let’s bring him somewhere safe." Emma voiced.
William nodded before his eyes moved toward the island. He hadn’t heard any explosion or battle cries from that place even though the last thing he saw before departing was two powerhouses clashing.
’That woman...’ The first time, she came out like a strange creepy person who didn’t leave much of an impression but strong enough to be remembered.
But this time, by helping William at the most crucial point, William knew he would not be able to forget about her for the rest of his life.
Her intentions remained unclear but right now what mattered was that the two people who mattered the most to him were here with him; safe and sound.
.....
"What is it, Kevin?" Natalie asked with concern when she saw him suddenly jolt awake.
They were in the common hall, having just finished their examination.
Kevin had looked quite exhausted afterward, so once they finished eating, he asked if he could take a short nap while the others continued chatting.
Natalie, Laila, and Lizel might have been on slightly awkward footing with one another, but they still got along fairly well, so they agreed without hesitation. However, only a few minutes later, Kevin suddenly rose from his seat, unusually alert.
"Kevin?" Lizel asked, tilting her head.
But Kevin had already stepped away from the table and began walking off.
Natalie exchanged a glance with Laila before the two women stood up and followed him, with Lizel trailing behind.
Kevin was fortunately just walking, though at a brisk pace, so it wasn’t difficult to keep up with him. None of them stopped him or asked what was wrong. They simply followed, knowing Kevin wouldn’t act this seriously and mysteriously over something trivial.
Soon, they reached the back side of the academy, where the gymnasium and ceremonial hall were located.
Kevin finally slowed to a stop.
He stood there quietly, staring past the round domes and into the evening sky.
"Kevin?" Natalie asked again as they stopped beside him. "Did you sense something strange?"
Kevin clutched his chest. His heart throbbed as if something terrible was about to happen. His instincts warned him that something was approaching.
The sensation felt eerily familiar.
It reminded him of the time he had hidden inside a closet, knowing his stepmother was walking outside with a heated tool in her hand, ready to torture him.
Even though his face didn’t show much fear, the feeling itself was deeply unsettling.
He finally parted his lips and said, "I feel like someone is watching us...waiting to attack."
Lizel grew visibly anxious. "Is it a Devil? Or maybe something worse?"
They hadn’t heard anything about a Death Sink appearing anywhere near the academy. However, none of them could take Kevin’s warning lightly. Time and again, his instincts had proven to be frighteningly accurate.
"Tell me if there’s anything else," Natalie said, trying to keep the atmosphere calm. "Do you feel any presence, or maybe you saw someone?"
If Lizel continued reacting like that, it would only make Kevin more uneasy.
Kevin looked down at his hand. Aside from calluses and faint scars, there was nothing unusual.
"It just...feels like something ominous is warning me," he muttered. "And whatever it is, it’s very close."
A brief silence settled over the group before Laila spoke.
"Should we inform the Headmaster?"
Kevin shook his head. "Just based on my instincts, I can’t alarm the Headmaster and create unnecessary chaos."
"But it’s not unnecessary. You said you sensed something, and we trust your judgment," Laila stated firmly.
Natalie let out a quiet sigh. "That’s true, Laila, but think about it. The Headmaster takes Kevin’s words very seriously because of his past success. The situation at the academy is already tense right now. If Kevin’s instincts turn out to be wrong, it could disturb the students."
Laila narrowed her eyes. "On one hand you say you trust Kevin, and on the other, you doubt his judgment. Stick to one opinion, Natalie."
Natalie was taken aback by the sharp response. She had genuinely thought the others would agree with her since it sounded reasonable.
But the way Laila glared at her made it feel as if she had committed some kind of crime.
The tension in the air was rising. Just then, Kevin spoke.
"Forget about it. We won’t inform the authorities. I’ll just inspect the area myself tonight."
Natalie took a deep breath and lowered her gaze, not saying another word. She was still shaken by the way Laila had spoken to her.
Lizel asked, "Won’t that be too risky? I’ll come with you."
Laila nodded. "Yes, it’s too dangerous. I’m sure something is lurking in the shadows. We should go together."
Kevin let out a quiet sigh. He had expected this. Every time he decided to take a risky step, even on a whim, his team refused to leave him alone.
Then he turned toward Natalie.
"What about you?"
The violet-haired girl was about to agree, but then she noticed Laila’s sharp, disapproving gaze.
She froze.
A conflict stirred inside her as her heart began to beat slowly.
Just then, a voice came from behind, "Miss Natalie?"
Natalie jerked and turned to look at the pink-haired guy standing there, waving at her.
She then said, "I have promised Loid to help buy him a present for his friend. So you three go."
Kevin narrowed his eyes as he looked at Loid.
However, before he could say anything, Natalie sprinted away, heading toward Loid.
The pink head was surprised by her approach but before he could say anything, Natalie held his hand, much to the guy’s surprise before telling him, "Don’t speak, just come with me."
"O-Okay!"
....
Emma exhaled a deep breath as she got out of the bath, and began wiping her tired body.
Entering that state that nearly killed her was exhausting. She had a conversation with one of the three Archangels and that conversation went in her favor.
Lord Raphael didn’t tell her what to do, and despite his displeasure towards William, he didn’t insist that she get away from him.
But well, he did warn her that the path she had chosen would be a much more difficult one. However, that wasn’t enough to threaten her. She had heard that warning and knew the risk already.
And that’s why, she was able to retain her footing in the deal and return back to the mortal world without promising him anything.
Wearing the same clothes as before, she stepped out of the bathroom and approached the bed where her beloved rested.
Carter was doing fine now, and he would be awake by tomorrow according to the medic. However, William has received severe damage so he needed a few days to recover.
As she approached his bed, she found William lying down and facing the other side.
She called out, "Hey. Do you want to eat something?"
"No."
A quick, short response delivered in a heavy tone.
Emma paused...wait...is it that, "Are you angry right now, Will?"
There was no response.
Oh.
