Love letters are not allowed in the exorcism notebook!-Chapter 476 - 54: The Seventy-Two Demon Gods are Extremely Terrifying
The Ma Family’s emotions were extremely complicated.
The fox was about to be squashed into a pancake, but it ran away.
Their own family had been rescued, but their savior... their savior’s identity was too complex, baffling them.
Watching the eerie, blonde-haired Taoist turn into a streak of light as he chased after the monk, Grandma Ma hesitated, and before the polite words could leave her mouth, he had vanished.
What in the world was all this?
Setting aside how the Ma Family would thank the group of Dark Immortals who came to support them, let’s just say that after returning to the Real World, Max was already pale, sweating profusely, and trembling with fear.
"Damn, we’ve provoked Astaroth."
"You asked him two questions and he couldn’t answer either—is that really provoking him?"
Xia Yubing retorted with a cold snort, "That Lord Astaroth is rather too sensitive, isn’t he?"
Max looked around, then whispered, "This isn’t the place to talk, let’s go back and discuss."
Back at headquarters, Max opened a bottle of red wine, poured himself a full glass, and after gulping it down, he barely revived his spirits.
"Have you guys heard of King Solomon’s legend?"
"Heard of it... or not?"
Li Mumu wasn’t sure which version he was referring to, given that in later generations, it’s been creatively modified so much that even King Solomon himself, rising from his coffin, probably couldn’t clarify it.
"Simply put, the legend says that Hell’s demons have 1,111 legions, each legion with 6,666 Fallen Angels. King Solomon made a pact with the 72 Demon Gods who commanded these legions, compelling these Demon Gods to serve him."
"He must have conquered a vast territory back then, right?"
Li Mumu asked curiously.
Max replied in irritation, "The 72 Demon Gods controlled all of Hell’s legions—the entire Hell was under their rule!"
"Then in the Real World, they must have had vast imperial territories as well?"
"Maybe they did once..."
Max said, aggravated, "Do you think everyone is like the people of Ming, with heads filled only with thoughts of expanding territories? In the era of King Solomon’s rule, God had already given them the best land in the whole world."
"What does land that can support 1,111 Legions of Demons look like?"
"...Can we not dwell on these questions?"
"I’m just genuinely curious because it’s different from the version of the story I’ve heard."
Li Mumu smiled and said, "To my knowledge, the historical King Solomon’s kingdom was just about the size of a palm, and not only was it neither flourishing nor developed, but it also left no significant cultural heritage to the world. The 72 Demon Gods who were nominally under his command seem to be even more famous than he was outside, isn’t that so?"
Max was speechless.
"Moreover, I’ve heard another version, saying that the supposed origins of the 72 Demon Gods are not Fallen Angels from Hell, but rather there were many ancient races and kingdoms in the West at the time, each with different cultures and worshipping different gods. To promote his own religion, King Solomon forcibly redefined these Ancient Gods that other nations and races worshiped as his own Demon Gods, his Fallen Angels."
"So the systems of those Demon Gods appeared to be incredibly chaotic, with overlapping authorities; you find traces of me in you, and you in me. Some legends of Demon Gods sound like they’re about real gods, while others make them out to be merely monsters..."
This was actually a view Li Mumu had seen on the internet before traversing.
Western mythology has many factions, but the ones widely known are the Greek Pantheon and the Nordic God System. Adapted into various films and television series, they became as household names as the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West IPs are domestically.
But the seventy-two Demon Gods of Solomon, that belonged to Western mythology as well, felt like they were hyped up without clear reasons why, even their own kin couldn’t sort out their relationships.
You claim to be a Great Demon God, wielding legions of demons under your command, then you must have accomplished many great feats, right?
Nope, don’t ask.
If you dare to ask, you are a heretic.
So, now hearing Max boast about his 1,111 legions, Li Mumu wanted to laugh.
It felt like listening to a first-grader bragging about bringing a hundred thousand Ultraman to block your way after school – utterly childish.
Max didn’t want to talk. He felt it was impossible to explain this matter to a brainless Evil Spirit.
Moreover, there was an even more terrifying Evil Spirit behind this one.
As for how many of King Solomon’s seventy-two Demon Gods could still walk the earth, that was hard to say. But Anhelica, the Netherworld Angel of the Guiding Bodhisattva who wielded dual authority in both the East and West, was indeed walking amongst mortals.
Her Followers had more than enough qualification to disdain Demon Gods.
He certainly did not.
He hadn’t spent all the money in his pocket, and was even making more; he had no wish to die at all.
"Don’t worry about Astaroth, even if he truly has thousands of troops, he can’t bring them here. If his true form dares to appear here, naturally, someone will take care of him."
Xia Yubing was even more dismissive of these so-called Western Demon Gods, "What I want to know is whether you have figured out why they are acting under the name of the Longevity Sect. Could these people scheming in the shadows end up throwing the blame on us? Max, have you ever considered that maybe the previous fall of the Longevity Sect was really related to them?"
Max remained silent. He had already harbored such suspicions, otherwise, he wouldn’t have made up such a smooth lie.
As a former Cardinal of the Longevity Sect, no one knew the sect’s affairs better than he did. To say that the Longevity Sect had never done evil deeds... well, that was certainly not the case, no need to whitewash it. But whether the misdeeds they committed warranted annihilation by the Special Service Bureau, that was not so clear.
On the surface, the reason was obviously that the Longevity Sect had schemed against the top echelon of the Red Lantern Society, breached the barrier between the Real World and Netherworld Springs, and nearly caused a major catastrophe. And there was the Blood Cup Sect spreading experimental notes, kidnapping underage girls for alchemical purposes...
Could there have been other reasons behind it all?
After learning about the other party’s background, Max’s suspicions only deepened.
"If it’s Astaroth, it must have something to do with the Stonecraft Association’s backing."
After hesitating for a moment, Max still voiced his conjecture, "The people from the Stonecraft Association are best at acting under other people’s names, throwing the trouble onto others while reaping the benefits for themselves. They can utilize some power from both Heaven and Hell. And those angels and demons also love toying with human hearts. I believe that the Fallen Angels under Astaroth taking up Buddhist Law and posing as monks must have deeper intentions."
"What intentions? What can a monk do, it can’t possibly be..."
Xia Yubing stopped mid-sentence, her expression suddenly changing, "Laozi turning barbarians into Buddhists?"
