Chapter 40: Switch The Glasses

Moments later, Nadia approached Yvette who was sitting in a quiet corner, her expression now painted with a fake smile. "Congratulations Yvette. You look so stunning today and I didn’t even knew you could dance so well" She said sweetly. "You were magnificent out there."

Yvette kept her expression neutral, sensing the undercurrent of malice behind her words. "Thank you," She replied, her voice polite but distant.

"C’mon, let’s get some drinks and celebrate". Nadia smiled as she signalled to a waiter passing by.

The waiter approached with two glasses of wine, placing them on the table between them, his actions subtle but deliberate.

Yvette heart raced as she smiled inwardly. She could already tell what was coming and what Nadia was playing at.

She had been in this industry long enough to recognize a trap when she saw one. Gone was the guilible girl from the past.

"To celebrate". Nadia smiled, lifting one of the glasses.

Yvette glanced at the other glass, then back at Nadia who smiled at her.

Yvette mirrored her smile, but her gaze remained steady. She wouldn’t fall for whatever was coming next.

"You still don’t trust me". Nadia sighed and placed the glass in her hands back on the table.

"Of course not". Yvette replied with a composed smile. "I was just lost staring at the guests". She added and Nadia smiled, shifting her gaze to the dance floor though occasionally glancing at the wine glasses.

The wine glasses sat between them like a silent threat, their crystal edges catching the light.

Feigning nonchalance, Yvette allowed a soft chuckle to escape her lips as she reached for the wine glass before her. "Oh, speaking of that". She suddenly exclaimed, pointing across the room to a group of executives gathered near the entrance. "Isn’t that Mr. Brittney? I heard he’s been looking to expand into international markets."

Nadia’s gaze immediately followed her gesture, her attention momentarily distracted.

In that split second, Yvette made her move. Swift and seamless, she switched their wine glasses, her movements so fluid that no one could have noticed.

By the time Nadia’s eyes returned to Yvette everything was as it had been.

"Really?". Nadia asked.

"Sure. I heared some of the guest discussing about it". Yvette replied and took a sip of the wine.

Nadia smiled, pleased to see Yvette lifting the glass. Her smile grew broader as Yvette downed all the contents in a go then dropping the empty glass on the table.

Nadia was convinced her plan had worked out. Satisfied, she picked up her own glass, unaware of the switch, and downed the wine in one confident gulp.

She placed the empty glass on the table with an air of triumph, her eyes gleaming as she subtly watched Yvette for signs of the drug taking effect.

Just as Nadia set down her glass , Leila arrived at Yvette’s side, her expression growing tense upon noticing the two empty wine glasses on the table before the two ladies.

"Yvette". She hissed under her breath, her tone a mixture of frustration and concern as she whispered "What were you thinking? Drinking from a glass just handed to you? You know better!".

"I shouldn’t have left you alone but thankfully you’ve taken the medicine earlier ..."

Yvette lips curved into a knowing smile. "Relax, Leila. I’m not the naive girl I was years ago." She cast a quick glance toward Nadia, who remained oblivious. "I can handle myself."

Leila frowned, though the tension in her shoulders eased slightly. "Still, you need to be careful. Especially in a place like this."

"I know,". Yvette said softly, her tone firm but calm. "But trust me, I wasn’t the one who needed to worry."

By then Leila already had a rough thought of what had happened. "But still, you’ll be blamed, others will think you’re the one who drugged her".

"Leila, is there something wrong?". Nadia asked, feigning concern.

"Nope. Not at all". Leila waved her off dismissively.

"Okay". Nadia smiled as she leaned further in her seat, expecting to see Yvette falter any second from the moment, waiting for the drug to take effect.

But then, something shifted.

It started with a slight twitch of her fingers. Her smile wavered as she rubbed her hand against her arm.

At first, she seemed to dismiss it as an itch. But soon, the itching intensified. She scratched at her arm harder, her eyes narrowing in confusion.

Her fingers began to work at her neck, her skin reddening as she scratched more urgently. Panic flickered in her eyes as she realized something was wrong.

She glanced at Yvette, who stood completely unaffected, her calm gaze unwavering.

"Oh no". Nadia exclaimed. Yvette was standing completely intact and unaffected but she .. .

Her eyes widened in horror as the truth dawned on her. "You..." She whispered, her voice hoarse as she clawed at her skin, red patches starting to form along her arms and neck.

Yvette tilted her head slightly, her expression serene. "Is there something wrong?" She asked innocently, her tone dripping with false concern.

Nadia’s breathing soon became shallow as she tried to maintain composure. She stammered, "You switched... the glasses... didn’t you?"

Yvette took a step closer, lowering her voice so only the two of them could hear. "You really thought I wouldn’t notice?" Her words were soft, but laced with steel. "I’ve been in this industry long enough to recognize a setup when I see one besides you’ve been using the same shallow tactics for years, I’ll be a fool not to know by now."

Nadia’s eyes filled with fury, but she was too overwhelmed by the itching sensation now spreading across her skin. She scratched at her neck, her voice strained. "You... bitch..."

Yvette smiled faintly, her eyes cool. "Next time, be more careful with your plans." She turned on her heel, leaving Nadia to her escalating misery.

Leila leaned in as they walked away. "You really switched them?"

Yvette shrugged, her confidence glowing. "I told you, Leila. I’m not the naive girl from years ago."

"You shouldn’t have been so impulsive". Leila sighed. "You could have just rejected it, if someone pins the blame on us we have no evidence to prove ourselves innocent".

"You know Nadia, there’s no way I could have rejected it or she’ll come up with another way and besides there’s evidence". Yvette replied.

"Zeke already has the evidence of her passing the drug to the waiter and instructing him on what to do but we won’t be using that now. Let her fan the flames for now, the more she fan the flames, it’ll end up burning her ".

"Then should we still stick to the plan".

"Yes". Yvette replied casting a final glance at Nadia’s frantic expression as she scratched her body vigorously, her whispered curses drowned out by the sound of music and laughter in the room.
