Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 31: "I’m Waiting for You.
A pang of guilt struck Miles Harrison.
He felt he had misled his uncle, making him willing to take a loss just to ensure he and Lucy Shaw got engaged.
"Actually, I..."
"You don’t like Lucy Shaw?"
Sean Harrison set down what he was holding and looked at Miles Harrison. His dark eyes were like deep wells, betraying no emotion.
But a chill ran down Miles Harrison’s spine. "That’s not it, exactly."
"If you don’t like her, why are you living with her? It shows that, subconsciously, you’ve already accepted her." Sean Harrison paused before continuing, "I think you two are a good match. It’s important for you to have a partner who admires and depends on you. That’s the kind of partner you need."
Although Sean Harrison wasn’t particularly close to Miles Harrison, he could glean a lot about his nephew’s character from the way he handled company affairs.
Sean Harrison had his own people inside Miles Harrison’s company.
At the company, he liked to be flattered and put on a pedestal.
He hated it when people opposed any decision he proposed.
Even if a decision was wrong, he’d rather let time and the outcome prove it, instead of having some self-important expert point it out beforehand.
To put it bluntly, without Sean Harrison’s help, it was only a matter of time before Miles Harrison would run the family fortune into the ground and be left with nothing.
Miles Harrison’s emotions were in turmoil.
He’d had a short-lived infatuation with Lucy Shaw, largely because she provided him with such great emotional support.
When he vented about his problems, her responses were always exactly what he needed to hear.
But... he wasn’t ready to just get married like that.
Seeing Miles Harrison remain silent, Sean Harrison asked directly, "Then who do you like? Who do you want to marry? Rory Linden?"
"No way. My mom’s the one who likes her. She wants me to marry her because she thinks Rory’s obedient. Mom never once asked for my opinion."
The denial from Miles Harrison was almost a reflex.
Even before he started dating Rory Linden, Evelyn Irving would often tell him that the two of them had to get along and stay together forever.
He didn’t dislike Rory Linden, either. He found her quite useful to have around.
She did whatever he told her to do.
He understood Rory Linden’s compliance.
After all, for someone of her standing, landing a boyfriend with his kind of status was practically a miracle.
"You were willing to make Rory Linden move out for Lucy Shaw, even defying your mother. That proves you genuinely like her." Sean Harrison’s expression softened slightly. "I’ll give the Shaw family some extra help. By the time you and Lucy get married in a year, they won’t be too much of a burden."
"There’s no need! If their family business is failing, that’s their problem. Why should we get involved?"
Miles Harrison refused on the spot.
He found he didn’t like hearing talk of him marrying Lucy Shaw.
In fact, he found the idea repulsive.
"They’ll be your wife’s family, after all. We have to help a bit, just to keep people from talking." Sean Harrison wouldn’t take no for an answer. "You don’t need to worry about any of this. I’ll handle it."
"Uncle! When it comes down to it, she only got close to me and wants to marry me for this, right? So our family will help her family!" Miles Harrison’s face was a picture of certainty. "Actually, everything you’ve been telling me was just to lead me to this conclusion, to make me reconsider. Isn’t that right?"
Sean Harrison walked over to the door and used his left hand to take an ironed suit jacket from the wardrobe.
"That’s not what I meant. I was very clear just now. I may be a businessman, but I still value family." He turned back to Miles, jacket in hand. "It’s not every day you find someone you like as much as Miss Shaw. Naturally, I’ll help you both, so you won’t have any reservations about marrying her."
’Do I like her?’
Miles Harrison was lost in confusion.
He had always thought he liked Lucy Shaw, and that marriage was an acceptable outcome.
But now, with Sean Harrison repeatedly telling him that he liked Lucy Shaw, he was no longer so sure.
Sean Harrison opened his office door and handed the jacket to his secretary waiting outside. He turned back to Miles Harrison. "Is there anything else? If not, you should head back. I have a flight to catch."
"Oh, right."
Miles Harrison knew he couldn’t hold up his uncle’s work.
The two of them, uncle and nephew, rode the elevator down and walked to the underground parking garage together.
Miles Harrison walked Sean Harrison all the way to his car.
As he watched his uncle’s car drive away, a subtle realization dawned on him.
’Hasn’t Uncle been in a really good mood ever since we left the office?’
’Is he going to see someone?’
While Rory Linden was having lunch, she received a WeChat message from Stella Yates.
Stella: [Hey girl, the school anniversary is next month. The class president and I are planning a one-year reunion. Can you make it?]
Rory Linden immediately replied that she could, as long as there wasn’t a work emergency.
Stella Yates immediately followed up with a voice call.
As soon as Rory answered, Stella started complaining, "You’re so quick to say yes. I’ve been contacting our old classmates, and so many of them are overseas. Even a bunch of the ones in the country are in other cities and can’t make it. I have no idea how many people will actually show up. It’ll probably just be a small get-together."
Rory Linden laughed. "Well, I’ll definitely be there then. I’ll move heaven and earth to make it."
"Awesome. That’s my girl, always so loyal. I..." Stella Yates seemed about to say more but suddenly changed her tune. "Something just came up here. I gotta go. I’ll message you once the details are finalized."
After the call ended, Rory Linden went back to her lunch.
Just as she finished her lunch and walked into her office, she was called into a meeting by her director, Keith Hawthorne.
She was informed that the cardiothoracic surgery department had just admitted a patient with infective endocarditis. The condition was critical, and immediate surgery was required.
After a quick briefing, Rory Linden estimated the surgery would take at least eight hours.
The first thing she did was send a message to Sean Harrison, letting him know she had to work late, the hours were uncertain, and that he and the driver shouldn’t wait for her.
She would just grab a taxi home when she was done.
Just as she sent it, her phone pinged—but it was a WeChat notification.
She and Sean Harrison hadn’t exchanged WeChat contacts yet.
Even knowing it couldn’t be a reply from him, she still opened it immediately.
It was her former landlord!
The landlord had first transferred her several hundred yuan.
Then came a long message: [Miss Linden, I’m so sorry. Last time, I acted rashly without knowing the full story. I was wrong to call you unfilial and kick you out. That was my fault. I’m not very educated and I don’t know much about anything. Please don’t hold it against me. Please forgive me. I’ve refunded your rent. If you need me to cover any other expenses, just let me know and I’ll pay them.]
Reading the long message, Rory Linden immediately understood what had happened.
But she was about to head into surgery and had no time to waste on the landlord.
She simply accepted the money and replied with two words: [Got it.]
Then, she deleted the landlord from her WeChat contacts.
The surgery went more smoothly than anticipated and was completed right on the eight-hour mark.
Rory Linden changed out of her scrubs and headed home for the day.
It was already 10:30 p.m. by the time she took the elevator down to the first floor.
The entire inpatient lobby was deserted.
Just as Rory Linden was about to walk out, she caught sight of someone sitting in a corner of the lobby.
The man was holding a tablet, his well-defined fingers gripping a stylus as he wrote on the screen.
The cool-toned lighting of the hospital lobby fell from above, casting stark, dramatic shadows that accentuated his handsome features.
Perhaps it was because he was so tall, with such long legs.
Even in the spacious seating area, he seemed to make the space feel cramped.
"Mr. Harrison." Rory Linden hurried over. "What are you doing here?"
Sean Harrison looked up and answered, simply and naturally, "I’m waiting for you."
