Chapter 170: Chapter 170: "Let Her In, I’ll Take Any Responsibility.

Rory Linden couldn’t be bothered with pleasantries and asked Rachel directly, "Can you give me your brother Henry Lancaster’s number? I can’t reach Sean Harrison, and I want to ask what’s going on."

"Oh? I... I don’t think that’s a good idea. I can’t give it to you."

Rachel stammered as she spoke.

She was clearly a terrible liar; even a simple refusal was a struggle for her.

This only made Rory more anxious, so she asked her outright, "Rachel, can you just tell me? Did something happen to Sean Harrison?"

"...I don’t know."

Rachel’s reply was swift this time.

Rory pressed, "If you don’t know, then give me your brother’s contact info. I’ll ask him."

At first, she’d thought it might not be anything serious, but now Rachel’s attitude made her waver.

’If nothing had really happened to Sean Harrison, a girl with Rachel’s personality would never be able to hide it.’

The other end of the line went silent for a few seconds.

Rachel finally cracked. "Look, Miss Linden, to be honest, I really don’t know. My brother was home for lunch yesterday when he suddenly rushed off, saying something had come up."

"What came up?"

"We didn’t ask at first. Later, he called me at night and warned me not to say anything if you called."

Rachel spoke in a rush.

Judging by her tone, she wasn’t hiding anything from Rory.

She really didn’t know anything, and she had been instructed by Henry Lancaster not to give Rory his number.

Rory didn’t press Rachel any further. Just before hanging up, she said, "Rachel, I’m really worried about Sean Harrison. If you find out anything, please tell me right away."

"Ms. Rory, I really don’t know anything. My brother probably didn’t tell me anything because he knows what I’m like."

Rachel’s change in address was accompanied by a sincere tone.

She truly didn’t know a thing.

"Okay, I know. I’ll let you go now. Sorry to bother you."

Rory ended the call.

Her expression was lost and confused.

The car drove all the way to the airport.

Elysian Hospital had booked them first-class tickets.

In the first-class lounge, Keith Hawthorne finally spoke up. "I might know something about Mr. Harrison’s situation."

Rory’s head snapped up.

She stared in disbelief at Keith Hawthorne, who was seated across from her.

The whole way there, she had been calling Rachel, and had later asked Sherry Walsh as well.

She hadn’t gotten any answers.

’Who would have thought that Keith Hawthorne would know something?’

Keith Hawthorne said, "Evan Hollis got into a car accident yesterday."

The man’s statement seemed to have nothing to do with Sean Harrison.

But Rory instantly guessed what it implied...

"Was Sean Harrison the one driving?"

Rory asked.

Keith Hawthorne nodded. "Evan Hollis is at Elysian Hospital right now, in a room on the top floor. All other information has been locked down. We’ll only know the specifics once we get back."

This course of action was understandable.

Given Sean Harrison’s status, the slightest hint of trouble could affect his company’s stock price.

’Hitting someone with a car...’

If even the slightest whisper of something like this got out, competitors could exploit it, tanking the stock price and the company’s market value.

"How serious is Evan’s condition?" Rory asked. "Is it life-threatening?"

She and Evan Hollis were colleagues. At that moment, her concern for his condition was really about Sean Harrison.

’Regardless of why Sean did it...’

’The severity of Evan’s injuries was critical.’

"It seems he has a comminuted fracture in his right leg and has already had surgery. His other injuries aren’t a major issue." Keith Hawthorne paused. "I heard Sean Harrison wasn’t injured. That’s all I know."

"Thank you."

Rory’s mind was in turmoil.

’How could this have happened?’

She couldn’t understand why Sean Harrison would do such a thing.

’So what if Charlotte Rhodes preferred Evan Hollis?’

’They had already agreed to get their marriage license on his birthday. Their life together was supposed to get better and better.’

’It’s so strange...’

Rory knew she couldn’t solve all these puzzles just by thinking about them.

She had to see Sean Harrison.

She had to ask him herself.

-

「By the time the plane landed at Veridia Airport, it was already evening.」

Rory took her luggage home first.

Everything in the house was almost exactly as she had left it.

His clothes and toiletries were all neatly in their original places.

It was as if he had just left for work and would be back in the evening.

Rory walked through the house one more time, and after confirming that nothing was out of place...

She went to the safe in the walk-in closet.

She entered the code one digit at a time.

The safe opened.

The contents of the safe were also unchanged, exactly as they were when she had last placed the Red Diamond inside.

Even the box holding the Red Diamond was still in its original spot.

Rory still opened the box to confirm the ring was inside before closing the safe.

She stood up, hesitated for a moment, then hailed a cab to Elysian Hospital.

When she reached the inpatient building, she took the elevator straight to the top floor...

"Dr. Linden, Dr. Linden!" A nurse saw her and immediately ran over to block her path. "Dr. Linden, you can’t go in."

Rory asked bluntly, "Do you know why I’m here?"

The nurse looked troubled. "We don’t, actually. The hospital administration just gave orders that you’re not allowed to see Dr. Hollis."

"Why?" Rory was confused. "Dr. Hollis and I are colleagues, and we’re on good terms. He was a huge help to me during the rural medical aid program. Now that he’s injured, I can’t even come to see him?"

The two nurses exchanged a glance.

One of the nurses said, "We’re sorry, Dr. Linden. We’re just following the director’s orders..."

Despair washed over Rory.

’The director would never get involved in something like this,’ she guessed.

’The one who gave this order had to be...’

’Sean Harrison.’

’The hospital administration was just passing along the message.’

Rory’s heart sank.

She picked up her phone, wanting to try calling Sean Harrison again.

Before she could dial the number, someone else walked up behind her.

The two nurses greeted him in unison, "Director Hawthorne."

Rory turned around.

Keith Hawthorne was in his scrubs, a white coat thrown on over them. He looked at Rory. "What’s going on?"

The nurse explained, "The director ordered us not to let Dr. Linden see Dr. Hollis."

Keith Hawthorne glanced at Rory, then looked back at the nurses. "Let her in. I’ll take full responsibility." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"Director Hawthorne..."

Rory was touched.

She had always known Keith Hawthorne was a good colleague and supervisor.

But she never expected he would be willing to step up and help her in a situation like this.

Keith Hawthorne stuck both hands in the pockets of his white coat. "Alright, save the waterworks. Get in there."

Rory said, "Thank you," and hurried toward Evan Hollis’s room.
