Chapter 57: Extraordinary love.

Adelyn’s soul shuddered for a moment at the sudden shift in the air.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for her to realize the cause.

Her eyes met with Dylan’s, and the way those deep blue-amber irises revealed everything.

He didn’t say a word, yet she could clearly read the accusation in his gaze —one that seemed to rise from deep resentment.

Seeing him like that, Adelyn’s nerves nearly twisted in panic. She quickly spoke before the misunderstanding could deepen.

"Don’t misunderstand my words, Mr. Warren," she said hurriedly. "What I meant is that I had never truly considered being with you ... for real. To me, you were someone unattainable. How could I even dare to dream of being with you?"

"But after you agreed to be with me ... I am delighted. It almost feels like a dream come true."

Another lie.

Her fingers tightened within the curl of her fists.

She didn’t know why she chose to lie again, but she simply couldn’t stop herself. The words slipped out before she could restrain them.

And now that the lie had already been spoken, there was no turning back.

Closing her eyes briefly, she allowed herself one fleeting moment of regret.

Meanwhile, when Dylan heard her explanation, the malice in his eyes slowly faded, transforming into something that resembled faint amusement.

"Is that so?" he asked, sounding suddenly interested in hearing more.

Adelyn opened her eyes and looked at him. For a second, she seemed dumbfounded, but the next moment she nodded quickly.

"Of course. After all, you are the cream of the crop —desired by man, pursued and admired everywhere. How could I possibly compare to the exceptional women who must have chased after you before me?"

She had never used flattery before, but around him she found herself doing things she never imagined.

Can she be even more shameless?

Dylan’s lips curved slightly at the corner, forming a subtle smirk. He glanced at her once before turning and walking back toward the couch.

Sitting down, he shook his head lightly.

"You are different from all of them, Ms. Grace."

Adelyn was momentarily speechless.

Was she?

"How?" she asked before she could stop herself.

The moment the words left her lips, regret flickered through her mind, but once again it was too late.

So, she simply stared at him, waiting for his answer.

Dylan didn’t reply immediately. Instead, he seemed to savor the moment before finally saying in a deadpan tone,

"They never succeeded. You did."

She was speechless again.

It was understandable that she had been flattering him to save herself in this situation.

But why was he doing the same?

Flattering her —returning the favor.

Adelyn suppressed a self-mocking scoff,

"What other requests do you have, Ms. Grace?" Dylan reminded her calmly.

Her brows furrowed slightly. After pondering for a moment, she carefully rearranged her thoughts and made a decision —one that might allow her to regain some control of the situation.

"Yes," she finally said.

However, instead of speaking immediately, she walked over and settled into the single-seater couch beside him.

Once seated, she met his gaze. Her fingers tighten against her palm.

Steeling her confidence, she began,

"Actually, Mr. Warren ... I have barely had any romantic entanglements in the past. The ones I did have never taught me enough to truly understand what love is."

She paused, silently reviewing her words before continuing.

"So even though I feel something towards you ... something quite strong ... I can’t be certain whether it’s truly love or just a complicated form of attraction. I hope you can give me some time to figure out what’s in my heart."

"After all," she continued, "what I firmly believe is that unless it’s mad, passionate, extraordinary love, it’s simply a waste of time. I never truly want to settle for the mediocrity in life —especially when it comes to love."

"So you want mad, passionate, extraordinary kind of love?" he asked, tapping his fingers thoughtfully as if analyzing her and her words before making a decision.

Adelyn smiled awkwardly.

If she were being honest, she wasn’t even interested in the idea of love right now.

The words she had just quoted were something she had once seen while scrolling through Instagram. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

But still ... if forced to answer, she supposed she did want the kind of extraordinary love that would make it impossible for her to walk away.

Not once.

Not twice.

But every single time.

"I’m not expecting anything, Mr. Warren," she said, trying to keep things simple so that her words wouldn’t become another trap later. "I only want time to understand my feelings for you. Until then, we can simply stay in a relationship without thinking too much about the future."

"And isn’t living in the present always better? That way we won’t have to worry about what might happen tomorrow."

Even she wasn’t entirely sure what she was asking for.

She only wanted to leave a door open for herself.

So that one day, when the opportunity appeared, she could walk away.

Dylan’s jaw ticked, though his composure never visibly faltered. He remained seated comfortably on the couch, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the rich velvet.

Seconds passed.

And with each passing moment, Adelyn’s anxiety grew stronger.

Just when her patience was about to snap, he finally moved.

Nodding once, he said,

"Okay."

"Okay?" she repeated, almost in disbelief. "You agreed again, Mr. Warren?"

She suddenly wondered whether the rumors about him being difficult had been exaggerated.

Otherwise, why would he seem so easy to deal with?

"As long as you remain sincere to your words, Ms. Grace," replied calmly, "I don’t mind following your wishes."

However, deep within his eyes, something unfurled —something fierce that seemed ready to break free.

"I will be sincere. Of course I will," Adelyn said quickly before rising to her feet and stepping away. For the first time entering the room, her nerves finally began to relax.

She checked the time on her watch before looking back at him.

"Ah... I almost didn’t notice the time. It’s already late. I have something I need to attend to. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave first."

With that, she began walking away.

When some distance formed between them and the man still hadn’t objected, she finally turned toward the door, ready to leave.

But just as she took another step, Dylan’s voice stopped her.

"Wait!"
