Chapter 33: Just another imagination.

Adelyn was still in the cab, stuck in traffic. She sighed as she looked at the endless line of vehicles ahead of them.

Over the years, some things still hadn’t changed in Ashvale. And traffic was one of them.

Feeling tired, she leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes, trying to rest. However, just then, her phone rang.

Without checking the caller ID, she answered, "Yes, grandson. Tell me. Did you prepare the dinner?"

"Long ago," Nigel replied from the other end. "How much longer will it take you to get back home?"

"I suppose ... another hour."

"You aren’t serious." Nigel’s voice shot up instantly.

Adelyn pulled the phone slightly away from her ear, squeezing her eyes shut.

"You made me carry everything home alone, arrange it all in your kitchen, and now you also expect me to keep waiting too? Adelyn Grace, what exactly do you take me for?"

"My grandson, of course," she replied calmly, as though she was dead serious.

Nigel fumed. "I am not your grandson. Don’t use my sarcasm against me."

She pursed her lips. "Fine. Then, do one thing." She paused briefly.

Nigel waited, expecting her to finally agree to him.

However, just after —

"Be good and wait for me," she said instead. "I’m stuck in traffic. I can only come after it clears."

"You — I am not waiting for you."

"Then eat first. I’ll —"

Before she could finish, the sharp beep of disconnection cut her off.

Adelyn stared at the phone, lips tightening.

This man ... did he really have to be this childish?

If he couldn’t wait for her, then he could always eat early.

Putting the phone away, she was about to rest again when something on the other side of the lane suddenly caught her attention.

She looked in the direction, pausing. There was a hint of familiarity in her gaze, though the indifference was stronger.

It was like she was looking at someone familiar yet a complete stranger at the same time.

Her eyes met another pair. Even from a distance, she saw those pupils dilate in recognition —first confusion, then shock.

However, she remained neutral. She didn’t look away, nor did she hesitate or grew conscious. She just stared like she would look at any person looking her way.

With no emotion.

The horns blared in the background, and finally after a long standstill, the cab began to move.

"The traffic seems better," the driver said from the front. "We should be able to get out of here now."

"That’s a relief. Please drive," Adelyn replied simply, before leaning back and closing her eyes.

Her expression remained calm and unwavering —as if she had just seen another stranger, not the part of the past she had once trained herself to forget.

Meanwhile, on the opposite lane —

Inside the frozen black color BMW, Xavier sat beside Clara, half-listening to her conversation. A faint indulgent smile curved up his lips.

Then —from the corner of his eye —he caught a familiar silhouette.

His gaze snapped toward it.

And he froze.

His eyes narrowed before widening.

Adelyn.

He whispered the name in his heart. His pulse slammed against his ribs.

Is it really her?

His hands instinctively moved to unbuckle his seatbelt — but Clara suddenly grabbed his arm, her brows knitting in confusion.

She leaned toward him, almost blocking his view. "Xavi, what’s wrong? Where are you going?"

"Clara ... give me a second," he said, his voice growing tight in urgency. "I’ll be back in a minute."

She didn’t understand. Her grip tightened on his arms, and she didn’t let it go. "But where are you going? We are stuck in traffic. You shouldn’t step out like that. You will —"

"No." He shook his head, pulling her hand away. Irritation creased the skin between his brows. "Let go. I need to go and confirm something."

"Confirm? What do you want to confirm? And —" She then noticed the desperation in his gaze, as he tried to just look behind her. "What are you looking at?"

She turned her head, following his line of sight.

Her brows formed a deep furrow, but then —

"Who is there?" she asked. She tried to scan the vehicles. But except for unfamiliar faces, she found no one.

She turned back to Xavier. "Did you see someone you know?"

Xavier didn’t answer. His frown only deepened. He searched again —

But she was gone.

"Xavier, I am asking you something?" Clara pressed, gripping his arm again, her fingers pressing deeper.

But Xavier didn’t care to explain. He removed her hand and pushed the door open before stepping out. "Stay here. I will go and look for her."

"Her?" She echoed —but he had already stepped out and shut the door behind him.

She turned and watched him, jogging amidst the vehicles almost frantically ... as if his life depended on finding whoever he was looking for.

"Who is he exactly looking for like that?" She murmured, her brows tightening in displeasure.

Xavier, on the other hand, rushed.

But no matter where he looked, he couldn’t find her.

In his desperation, he peered through windows, knocked on glass —only to me met with strangers again and again.

At last, breathless, he stopped and bent forward, his hands braced on his hips.

"Was she really here ... or was it just another illusion?" 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

He wanted to figure out, believe the former. But before he could, Clara’s voice broke through the noise.

He turned to look back in her direction.

He couldn’t hear her clearly, but she was waving at him. He turned to look ahead in the direction to see the traffic clearing.

The horns were blaring, showing people’s frustration.

He glanced one last time at the spot where he had seen Adelyn.

Nothing.

His brows furrowed. Maybe it was just another imagination. He thought and then walked back, returning to the car.

The moment he got inside, Clara demanded without waiting another second. "Who were you looking for like that?"
