Love Across the Light Years -The Devil CEO Indulges My Lies.-Chapter 22: Grandson, your Grandma isn’t getting any prettier.
Since Adelyn had taken responsibility for training Nigel, she didn’t intend to back down.
Not even when the bill for their cart exceeded her set budget.
"Are you sure you are going to pay that much?" Nigel asked, eyeing the display. "I still have some savings left for the month remaining. If you want, we can split it."
Adelyn’s eyes sparkled when she heard him say that.
Anything that helped her save money was enough to impress her.
And right now, Nigel couldn’t look more impressive.
However, just as she was about to accept his suggestion, she was reminded of the promise she had made to him earlier.
The delight in her gaze dimmed —but then the determination shone in her eyes.
Patting his shoulders, she said reassuringly. "Don’t worry. Your Grandma has enough to support your dreams."
Nigel raised a brow at her as she turned to hand her card to the cashier at the counter.
The cashier soon processed the payment. As the beep of deduction sounded, Adelyn felt her heart break in loss.
However, she kept her calm.
Without turning to Nigel, she said, "Remember my sacrifices." Her tone was enough to convey her pain. "And be sure to give me the credit for your success in future. Or else, —" she turned sharply only to glare at him, "even if I am dead, my ghost will come back to haunt your descendants."
Before Nigel could say anything, the cashier spoke up. "Ma’am, your card."
Adelyn took it back and gestured towards the shopping bags. "Grandson, your Grandma isn’t getting any prettier. Take the bags and move. There are more people in the queue waiting for their turn."
She moved ahead and picked up a few bags, leaving the rest for him.
"Hey, you —" Nigel tried to protest, but by the time he could speak, Adelyn had already walked some distance away.
He had no other choice but to grab the remaining bags and follow her.
They were friends, and she treated him well, yet at times like these, her attitude made him feel bullied.
"Can you wait for me?" he shouted after her, quickening his pace.
Adelyn didn’t slow down. However, after a moment, she came to a complete halt outside the store.
Nigel thought it was for him. But as he got closer, he realized she didn’t stop for him but for the call.
He stopped beside her and set the bags down. The weight didn’t test his strength, but it did leave a faint burn in his hands.
"Got it, Sister Freya," Adelyn said into the phone. "I will be there right away."
And with that, she hung up and slipped the phone back into her pocket.
Turning to Nigel, she was about to explain —
But before she could, Nigel complained as though betrayed.
"No, no ... don’t you dare ditch me right now," he said, stepping back as if that might change her mind.
Adelyn pursed her lips and stared at him. "I have something really important to attend to. I need to go."
Nigel looked at her, almost in disbelief. Then, pointing at the bags near his feet, he asked, "Then what about these? Don’t tell me you want me to carry them home alone and arrange them in your kitchen."
"That’s not that difficult of a task," she shrugged.
He jabbed a finger at her. "Are you serious? There are so many. How can you expect me to carry all of them alone?"
Adelyn picked up the bags she had been holding and dropped them beside his feet.
Then, she looked at him and said, "Don’t be such a baby now. Both of us know about each other’s strengths. And I can tell —it’s a small task for you."
"Small task —my foot!" Nigel cursed. "I am not doing it."
Adelyn crossed her arms and stared at him.
"Don’t look at me like that. I am seriously not carrying them alone."
"Nye," she called softly, almost like coaxing a child. "Be good. Grandma now needs to go to earn money. If she doesn’t, how else will she support your dreams?"
"You —!" He wanted to argue, but once again, he felt like he had dug his own grave.
Can he even complain now?
"Looks like you have finally agreed," Adelyn said, patting his arm. "Great. I will go then. You head back and wait for me at home."
Before Nigel could say anything else, she was already walking away, waving at him.
He could only watch her leave, then glance down at the load he had to carry.
To be honest, she was right. It was not a big task.
Yet —
He hadn’t signed up for it.
Not when he had agreed to go shopping.
And definitely not knowing he would have to carry everything alone.
—————
Meanwhile —
After walking quite a distance, Adelyn was still couldn’t find a cab.
She looked around, but there were none.
She walked further ahead, but there was still no sign of one.
She glanced down at her phone, only to see the tag ’no cabs available around’ hanging up on the screen.
Frowning, she wondered how she was supposed to get out of there when she heard the sound of an engine approaching from a distance.
Hoping it was a cab, she turned —only to be disappointed.
Her phone rang again.
She was about to answer when the car she had noticed earlier stopped beside her.
She would have ignored it if the window hadn’t rolled down.
"Miss," the driver said politely, "sorry, but we are a little lost. Can you tell me how to get out of this place?"
Her first instinct was to look at the navigation screen. After all, luxury cars like a Rolls-Royce always came equipped with such features.
However, the screen was completely black.
"The map isn’t working," the driver explained with a polite smile. "Otherwise, we wouldn’t have troubled you."
She looked at him carefully. She didn’t let her guard down, but she returned a polite smile.
"The way out is a bit complicated since you took the wrong route. But it’s fine. If you are not in a rush, you should still be able to get out without much trouble."
The driver nodded. "We aren’t particularly running late. As long as we don’t have to take a detour from here, it will be fine."
Adelyn nodded in understanding and began explaining the directions to him.
She was carefully meticulous, but the look on the driver’s face said it all.
He was confused.
"This might be difficult," she said kindly. "Give me a pen and paper? I can write it down."
However, the driver looked awkward. "Sorry, but I don’t think I have any. How about you come with us? You can guide us, and we will drop you off." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
That was fair. But still —
Adelyn was about to refuse.
But before she could, the driver added, "From what I can see, you won’t find a cab around here. This might be your best option."
Her brows furrowed, but she realized he wasn’t wrong.
After a brief pause, she nodded.
Opening the door, she slid into the front seat —only to freeze.
They weren’t alone.
Someone was sitting in the back seat.
