Chapter 59: An Awakened?

BLARE!!!

The alarms rang, sending the researchers into a state of panic seeing a fire start out of nowhere, while the guards ran around trying to contain it.

It didn’t take long for one of them to notice Lucian who was no longer concealing his presence.

"Hey! Who are you?!" One of them shouted, aiming his gun at Lucian.

His shout managed to get the attention of some other guards.

"Don’t move!"

"State your name and purpose here!"

The other guards surrounded him, throwing him questions while the rest tried to put off the fire that was rapidly spreading through the place.

’It’s better this way’ Lucian thought, seeing them surround him.

"Now I can kill you all at once!" He muttered, his aura fluctuating wildly.

The whites of his eyes darkened and the edges of his clothes lit up with black flames.

"Awakened! Shoot!!"

"Kill him, he’s an awakened!!!"

"Shoot!"

"Contact her now!"

They shouted, immediately throwing everything they had at Lucian who just stood still in place.

After firing a few rounds of bullets and throwing a few grenades, they stopped, waiting for the dust to settle and when it did, they were freaked.

A small crater could be seen at the spot where he was standing. No body parts, limbs not even a drop of blood, and while they should have felt glad that they had managed to eliminate the threat, none of them bore happy expressions.

They could all feel the ominous tension in the air, leaving them on guard, and they all thought the same thing;

’There was no way they could eliminate an awakened that easily.’

"Pretty sharp, huh?"

The voice was heard amongst them, as if whispering into each of their ears and amidst the dreadful silence, they heard a snap and that was all they knew before they turned to ashes after being lit in black flames for a moment.

They didn’t even know how they died, painless and swift!

Moving forward, Lucian killed every one he came across in the same manner, turning them to ashes the moment he passed them by.

Same went with the people in lab coats. He didn’t even give them time to beg for their lives.

Packing up the evidence, Lucian paused and turned around slowly to see an unknown lady standing behind him with the battered body of No 5 at her feet.

He could faintly see the rising and falling of his chest indicating that he was still alive.

"Let him go while I am asking nicely lady!" He said to the lady whose face was covered with a mask.

"Why? You’ve murdered those I was tasked to look after" She retorted.

"Well, what can I say? It’s not my fault you’re bad at your job!" He said, shrugging his shoulders before threatening with a serious tone.

"Now, let go of him before I burn you both to ashes!"

The flames enveloped his whole figure to form a cloak as he spoke.

"Well aren’t you impa—"

Her words got cut off when Lucian suddenly appeared in front of her, landing a solid blow on her face before she could react, separating her from No 5 and sending her flying into a wall.

Lucian picked No. 5 from the floor turned around walking towards the drives the researchers had gathered together to destroy before he killed them all.

After taking a few steps, he paused hearing sounds of falling rocks behind him.

"I’m surprised, you didn’t die" Lucian said, throwing No. 5 forward before turning back.

The lady stood in front of him with a furious expression, spitting out a clump of blood.

"I was careless, but you really are a bitch to hit me in the face!" She said.

The cold and indifferent expression on Lucians face only angered her more and she gave up on small talk and prepared to fight, the lights in the lab blinking in and out with sparks flying around.

"Hmm?" Lucian hummed in slight interest.

Not making the same mistake as before, she rushed out to Lucian throwing a flurry of high speed punches, all of which he blocked easily.

Grabbing her hand, Lucian eyes narrowed and he threw her a warning;

"You look down on me. Do you seek death?"

Hearing this, she unhanded herself and jumped back alarmed, looking at her arm which had a burn mark where he held her.

Sparks of electricity started to gather around her, slithering up her body before exploding outward, burning away her dress to reveal a tight body suit.

"That’s a —"

Lucian’s expression darkened at the sight of the bodysuit but his expression warped further when he sensed a significant amount of energy suddenly gathering above his head as he rushed to change his stance at the last moment, crossing his arms above his head as a small pillar of electricity struck down on him. It was too late for him to dodge.

When the light from the pillar was gone, Lucian could be seen still in the same position, his arms slightly charred from the damage and his knees were bent slightly.

The lady frowned seeing the miniscule amount of damage she had inflicted on him. That was obviously not her total output but to take it like that and come out almost unscathed made her realize how dangerous her opponent was.

Lucian on the other hand was staring at his charred hands, his whole body trembling. The lady thought it was from the stunning effect of her attack but Lucian knew it was out of anger.

’She damaged me? She damaged me? That piece of trash damaged me?’ Lucian felt his ego take a huge hit. A piece of trash that he met in the slums, a place he detested and looked down upon had managed to land a hit and damage him, even if it was just a light char, it was a heavy blow on his ego.

In an instant, he appeared in front of her just like before, about to land a harder blow, his hands coated in a large amount of flames. He planned to end it in one blow, but the lady was prepared this time.

The lady set up a small field around her, sending pillars and condensed balls of electricity at Lucian who was forced to dodge and retaliate with his own balls of flames, but this approach made it hard for him to get close enough to her to deal any significant damage.

The lady had somehow managed to figure out that he was a close quarter fighter and had resorted to long range attacks to keep him from coming close.

Seeing that the battle was turning into one of attrition, Lucian decided to take another approach and abandon any plans of dodging.

If they went on this way, the damage from their fight would eventually make the place collapse on itself so he had to end things quickly.

Diving straight into the field of electricity, Lucian left his defense up to the cloak of flames that surrounded him.

"Is he crazy?!" Her eyes widened as she saw Lucian abandon all intentions of dodging and diving straight into her attacks, getting consumed by them.

Before he could understand though, Lucian face appeared from the cloud of dust, his eyes completely consumed by his flames as he threw a punch that felt ten times harder than the previous one.

He had finally gotten in range!

Coating his fists with his flames, Lucian took control of the flow of the battle with the small chance he got after surprising her, sending punches after punches, jabs after jabs to the lady in front of him who had been caught off guard.

Catching her body that was about to hit the ground, he sent a knee to her face.

"Hmm?!" Lucian hummed.

He didn’t feel his attack connect!

She had blocked the attack with her hand at the last moment, griping his knee hard.

"Got you!" Her voice was heard as he raised her face which had a victorious smile on it summoning a large pillar of electricity on the both of them

"And what did you hope to achieve with that?" Lucian’s voice was heard through the pillar of electricity as black flames exploded forth from within the pillar, blasting the surrounding electricity away.

The lady let go of her hand which had started to burn from the sheer heat radiating from his body, she could even feel her skin starting to dry up and crack open.

She wanted to run backward, away from him, but Lucian’s iron grip on her head prevented her from doing so.

Sensing her end approaching fast, she screamed at the top of her voice,

"Static Amour!"

A huge amount of energy exploded from within her, rising up to form another pillar of electricity.

With this she managed to free herself from Lucian’s hold.

"...."

Lucian looked at her new appearance, which was an amour made out of large amount of condensed electrical energy, giving her the appearance of a warrior.

Seeing the electricity crackling around her from arcs that extended for a few meters in front of her, Lucian asked in a disappointing tone.

With this amour, she abandoned her long range method of fighting and switched to close combat with Lucian, condensing parts of her electricity to make weapons, but no matter how she tried, she couldn’t cause Lucian any damage, the numbing quality of her amour seemed to have no effect on him either. The intense shaking from their fight had already caused a few buildings to collapse; taking a few lives in the process, disrupting their celebration above and sending the people into panic.

"Is that all you have left?" Lucian asked, disappointed.

The lady’s expression darkened at his question and her lips tightened to a thin line.

Gathering her energy together in a final attempt, she sent a huge ball of electricity flying towards Lucian.

’Is she dumb?!" Lucian thought.

The attack she had just thrown at him was even weaker than those she used in her previously form. Although her transformation had increased her energy and ability, it was still nowhere enough to make Lucian feel threatened and the lady knew that too which was why she...?!

"Shit?!!" Lucian’s expression warped in anger as he felt the immense energy appear behind him.

He had fallen for her feint. He was never her real target. The real targets of her attack were No. 5 who laid limp at the back and all the information gathered.

If Lucian decided to block the attack she threw at him, he was going to lose No.5 and the evidence he came here for, making the whole mission pointless with him suffering a loss.

Realizing this, Lucian moved immediately, appearing in front of No 5 to disperse the attack.

When the energy died down, Lucian saw a hole at the top of the place and her aura was getting increasingly fainter. She had saved up her energy for her escape. There was no way he could catch up to her again!

"...." Lucian’s expression darkened, his flames fluctuating wildly.

"Piece.... of...trash!!!"

He muttered with his jaw clenched as the cloak of flames on him exploded forth in his anger, sending No 5 flying to the other end of the room, scattering the evidence on the table and making more of the buildings above crumble from the outburst.
