Lord of Myths: I Can Summon and Fuse Divine Powers.-Chapter 35: The Old Woman. (2)
The light of sunset bathed the streets of Aurudil, unaware that horror would soon fall upon the city.
Regulus was the first witness to this horror.
Time seemed to stop at that moment, the old lady took a step forward, and her arm stretched unnaturally toward Lisbeth’s face.
From her fingers emerged sharp claws that dug between the socket and the eye, then the old lady pulled her arm back.
The eye was torn out with ridiculous speed, so much so that one could almost doubt what they had seen.
"Perfect, one eye should be enough," the old lady said calmly, as she held Lisbeth’s eye in her hand.
Her face was calm, as if the old lady were completely oblivious to what had just happened to Lisbeth.
The pain didn’t come right away, but when it did, it was torture for the poor girl.
"KYAAAAA," she screamed, as she knelt in pain and held the wound.
Blood began to drip through her hands, as she let out a scream that would make anyone’s hair stand on end.
"Oh come on, don’t be so dramatic, it was barely a scratch. These young people today can’t handle anything," the old lady mocked, as she held the eye by the nerve, above her mouth.
In a disgusting gesture, the old lady dropped the eye directly into her mouth, swallowing the eye calmly, as if it were normal.
Regulus felt his body trembling, but he couldn’t move.
On one side he had Lisbeth, who was screaming in pain, and on the other, that monstrous old lady.
Regulus felt his guts churning, his instinct told him to flee, however, a part of him didn’t want to.
He had already fled when Ruth was attacked. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
He had no choice, he had to get help, but in the end Ruth was kidnapped.
Not only did they not know her whereabouts but she was also in danger of dying.
Now the situation was repeating itself. Again he wasn’t capable of doing anything.
Again he was too weak to act.
Too weak to save anyone.
"R-run," Lisbeth then said, her voice was broken by pain, but still she had found the strength to tell Regulus to flee.
She was strong.
Lisbeth was always like that, she acted like the eldest, sacrificing her own desires so her younger siblings could be happy.
Lisbeth was always kind, sometimes she even helped Regulus cook.
She didn’t laugh at him like the rest of his friends, who said cooking was work for girls.
Lisbeth always comforted him when he got hurt, didn’t judge him for crying, and was always patient and kind.
While Tata was already like a mother to him, having so many children in her care, the woman couldn’t give so much attention to everyone.
But Lisbeth was there to fix that. She was like a big sister to everyone, especially to Regulus.
If he fled now, who knows what atrocities that lady would do to her.
After all, he knew it.
Going to get help was an excuse for him to get to safety, not to really help.
"I-I don’t want to," the boy finally said, feeling courage growing inside him. "I’m not leaving you alone!"
Lisbeth was wounded, she could barely process what was happening around her.
She felt horrible pain, but above all fear for what might happen to her brother.
She told him to flee, it was the only thing she could do for him now.
"R-run with Caligo," the girl said, still lying on the floor in pain with blood falling from her eye.
Regulus was paralyzed again at those words.
It was true, he wasn’t alone.
The blond turned, seeing how that expressionless girl looked at him, with a hint of fear in her eyes.
Her eyes, formerly gray, were now tinged with a yellowish green, which had also spread to the tips of her silver hair.
She looked fragile, and even Regulus could sense she was scared inside.
He barely knew her, but he could empathize with her, he had also been someone like that, someone who fears showing their emotions.
Regulus was caught in a great dilemma, either he tried to escape with Caligo to keep her safe, but abandoning Lisbeth.
Or he stayed, putting Caligo and himself in danger, surely fighting uselessly.
His heart told him to stay, while his head told him to leave.
But in both cases, he most likely wouldn’t be able to do anything because of his weakness.
"Caligo?" the old lady repeated with surprise, as her eyes settled on the girl in question.
She felt a chill when the old lady looked at her, but Regulus instinctively put himself in front of her.
"How interesting, so he named her... and he even used that name, how curious," the woman said as she stroked her chin thoughtfully.
Regulus saw an opportunity, she was distracted now, he quickly ran to Lisbeth.
The right answer had always been there, it was too obvious.
He simply had to flee with both of them.
The boy, armed with courage, ran to his sister and helped her up.
"R-Regulus what are you doing? You need to flee, I’ll only slow you down," the girl said with a trembling voice, as if it was hard for her to speak.
The boy shook his head, his expression was determined, though fear still remained in his eyes.
"I won’t leave you here, we’ll all flee together," the boy affirmed, as he walked toward Caligo, while Lisbeth was leaning on his shoulder.
The old lady looked at Regulus with a mocking attitude.
"Oh no, I’m sorry, ’Caligo’ will come with me, I’m very sorry," she said with a smile, as she turned her head to look at the girl. "She’s something like a ’daughter’ to me, and now that she’s ready, she must come with me."
The old lady affirmed.
Upon doing so, Caligo took two steps back, frightened.
She looked at the old lady as if she already knew her, but at the same time, it was clear she didn’t want to go with her.
"No!" the boy then shouted, feeling courage growing inside him. "I won’t let you do anything to her, you crazy old lady!"
The boy roared bravely, looking defiantly at the old lady.
The woman arched both eyebrows with surprise, then let out a mocking laugh.
"Look how brave he is, though courage is useless if you’re dead."
And with those words, the old lady’s arm deformed and accelerated toward Regulus’s face.
The boy didn’t have time to blink before death loomed over him.
