Chapter 62: Chapter 61: "Yeah, What Those Boys Said Really Went Too Far.

She glanced at the car’s display screen. 7:15. It would take about ten minutes to walk to the exam hall.

Xu Su quickly opened the car door and got out, saying, "You don’t need to bring me lunch. I’ll eat in the cafeteria. Just come back this afternoon."

In the end, she still hadn’t brought her phone with her. If it was going to be confiscated, she’d rather it happen after the exam, when she was heading home in the afternoon.

Rushing to the exam hall, Xu Su noticed people along the way were giving her an indescribable look.

It wasn’t like the curiosity of the usual onlookers; this was a look tinged with malice, and occasionally... pity?

Her assigned seat was surrounded by unfamiliar students. Xu Su didn’t know why they were sneaking glances at her like that. She sat in silence with her lips pressed together, waiting for the bell to ring.

The proctor walked in with a stack of exam papers, and the classroom fell completely silent.

The first exam of the day was math, from 7:30 to 9:30—two hours in total.

The test was very difficult, but Xu Su found it quite manageable.

Just like with yesterday’s chemistry paper, the last four major questions on this math test were the exact types Xi Xueshen had predicted.

’This guy seemed to have completely mastered the key concepts. He’d even grasped eighty to ninety percent of the question types that would appear on the final exam.’ Xu Su worked on the problems in a great mood, deciding to temporarily forgive him for inexplicably hugging her yesterday.

Even though she was familiar with the question types, Xu Su didn’t dare waste a single moment of the two-hour exam. After finishing, she carefully checked her answers twice.

She didn’t turn in her paper and leave the classroom until the bell rang.

After leaving the exam hall, Xu Su headed straight for the restroom. On her way back, she passed by Class 12 and heard a huge commotion inside. A crowd of people was packed in circles around the classroom door.

’Are students arguing?’

Xu Su frowned. Huang Feng and Qian Jia were both taking their exams in Class 12.

Just as she thought this, a familiar, loud voice rang out from inside, still clearly audible over the racket.

It was Huang Feng’s voice. She was saying, "At least I don’t go around bad-mouthing my own classmates behind their backs. Fu Zichen, you’re disgusting!"

Another voice, much fainter compared to Huang Feng’s booming one, replied. But since Xu Su had already reached the classroom door, she heard every word.

Fu Zichen said, "What did I bad-mouth? Everyone’s saying it, so why can’t I? I was just repeating what I heard. So many people are saying Xu Su’s family has a deaf-mute gene. Why don’t you go pick a fight with every single one of them!"

Xu Su froze on the spot. She finally understood the reason for all the subtle, fleeting glances she’d been getting from people at school today.

’So what happened yesterday afternoon has been turned into major news and is being spread around.’

In an instant, Xu Su could imagine how the rumors bad-mouthing her must have spread.

’Xu Su from the honors class was seen collecting scrap along the street yesterday afternoon, followed by a deaf-mute man who looked like her "father." So what if she’s pretty and gets good grades? The deaf-mute gene is hereditary!’

Xu Jianbang was indeed born mute, and he was her biological uncle. So, what Fu Zichen said wasn’t wrong. Xu Su’s family did have this gene.

’If I were really pregnant, there really would be a certain chance of having a deaf-mute baby.’

’But even if it was a fact, it wasn’t a weapon for others to use to attack me.’

Xu Su clenched her fists, her face ashen with anger.

Many people in the crowd recognized her and automatically cleared a path. The noisy chatter subconsciously died down. Even the few people inside, red-faced from arguing, sensed something was off and all looked over at the same time.

Only then did Xu Su get a clear view of the situation inside.

Huang Feng and Qian Jia were standing by the teacher’s podium. Across from them stood four other girls from the honors class. Besides Fu Zichen, the other three were girls who were usually close with her.

It looked like Fu Zichen and her friends had been discussing Xu Su’s family situation when Huang Feng and Qian Jia overheard them and, unable to stomach it, started an argument.

Seeing the subject of their discussion walk in, Fu Zichen and the others took an uncomfortable half-step back before forcing themselves to stand straight again.

Huang Feng and Qian Jia, on the other hand, looked at Xu Su with worried expressions.

Huang Feng walked over and took her arm. "Susu, don’t be angry. Let’s not stoop to the level of these bitches. They’re just jealous of you."

Fu Zichen and her friends’ lips trembled with anger at being called ’bitches.’ They looked like they wanted to say something, but when their eyes met Xu Su’s, they felt a pang of guilt, and the argument died on their lips.

The circles of students who had been watching the show, their giggling and clamor now gone, all stared at Xu Su, curious to see what she would do.

Xu Su had already recovered from her initial burst of anger. She turned her head to Huang Feng. "What time is it?"

Huang Feng had a digital watch. She raised her wrist to look at it. "There are still ten minutes left in the break."

Xu Su nodded. Then she turned back to Fu Zichen and the others, seemingly contemplating what to say.

Being stared at like this made Fu Zichen extremely uncomfortable. As students who had gone through nine years of compulsory education, they all had a basic sense of right and wrong.

She stammered, "I... We didn’t really say anything... People in the other classes were saying much worse things. We were just having a normal conversation... We didn’t mean to bad-mouth you."

In truth, they hadn’t done it on purpose. They had just heard students from other classes talking about it when they got to school that morning. Out of curiosity, they started chatting about it with their friends during the break, not expecting the passing Huang Feng and Qian Jia to overhear. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

The two girls had clashed before and didn’t get along. One thing led to another, and they started arguing. In reality, although Fu Zichen disliked Xu Su because of Xi Zirong, she didn’t harbor that much malice toward her.

The way Xi Zirong had been tutoring Xu Su one-on-one these past few months had long since made her understand. So what if Xu Su’s family background was bad? Did she really think that would make him notice her?

Hearing Fu Zichen say this, the three girls beside her also nodded hastily. "I heard some boys from another class talking about you just now, and I even cussed them out a bit."

"Yeah, what those boys were saying was way over the line."

"Xu Su, we’re classmates. Even if we don’t know you that well, we really didn’t mean to bad-mouth you on purpose."

Xu Su listened in silence. When they finished, considering that Class 12 wasn’t far from her exam hall and there was still time, she decided to say a few words.

She looked at Fu Zichen. "I’m willing to believe that what you’re saying is true, that you really didn’t have any malicious intent when you were talking about me just now. And I don’t think the fact that my uncle is deaf and mute is something so shameful that it’s worthy of being spread around by students as major news."

The area fell silent, even quieter than one of Teacher Wu’s classes.

Xu Su slowly turned her head, her gaze sweeping over the surrounding students. Her voice was exceptionally calm. "My uncle was born deaf and mute, but he hasn’t wronged anyone. Every day, he collects scrap along the streets to earn money and avoid being a burden on his family. He’s working hard to make his own way in life, and I will never think that having an uncle like him is something to be ashamed of."
