Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 148: Hold Out for Half an Hour
"Tonight will be the least stressful night for you, cherish it and get some sleep." Lu Yao didn’t mind how her parents and Wang Jin’s parents viewed things; surviving on this planet was the most important thing.
"And you?" Wang Jin asked, although she was indeed a bit sleepy.
"I’m fine. Once the meat is smoked well, I’ll naturally get some sleep." Lu Yao replied. This seventy to eighty pounds of jerky needed someone to watch over it. Otherwise, if other animals carried it off, their hard work would be in vain.
"Alright then, I’ll go to sleep." Wang Jin thought about how they’d be living a tough life starting tomorrow, so she didn’t stand on ceremony with Lu Yao at night.
The hammock was just on the tree next door, and the warmth from the fire would raise the surrounding temperature a bit, keeping them from getting cold in the latter half of the night.
Climbing onto the hammock, Wang Jin saw Xu Yi and Lu Ke in the camp.
She wanted to greet them but held herself back.
Settling in, Wang Jin closed her eyes, preparing to sleep. In less than ten minutes, she was asleep.
Half an hour passed before Lu Ke went to sleep.
Xu Yi didn’t last much longer; after fiddling with some clay, he too went to sleep.
Before you knew it, a night had passed, and they welcomed the 36th day of sunlight.
Xu Yi also completed his 41st check-in.
Tomorrow, Xu Yi could receive a new Basic Gift Package.
It was still Lu Ke who rose early; she performed the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening three times, then cooked breakfast after washing up.
Afterward, Lu Ke opened the fence gate and walked toward where Wang Jin and Lu Yao had camped last night.
Lu Yao was sitting on a log, hugging her knees as if she were sleeping.
Wang Jin was curled up in the hammock, sleeping soundly.
Because of this, Lu Ke didn’t disturb them and quietly returned to the camp.
Coincidentally, she saw Xu Yi coming out of the house.
"Morning." Lu Ke greeted first, then said, "I went to check, and they’re both doing well."
"That’s good." Xu Yi stretched, then began performing the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening.
Breakfast was cooked with leopard meat, and it tasted quite good.
After breakfast, they rested for more than ten minutes.
Xu Yi cut two sections of bamboo to make two bamboo tubes that could be used to carry water. After all, both he and Lu Ke had a satchel, and each could carry a bamboo tube with water.
After leaving, Xu Yi closed the fence gate.
Wang Jin and Lu Yao were already awake, and the two were boiling water to drink.
"Heading out to hunt?" Wang Jin greeted proactively; after all, an entire night had passed. If there were any issues, Xu Yi and Lu Ke wouldn’t have come by.
"Yes, we’ll see if we can catch anything. And you guys, will you head back to camp later?" Lu Ke also asked.
"Yes, we have to take back these dry rations." Wang Jin enviously glanced at Lu Ke; her gear and weapons were so much better than her own.
"Then be careful. Xu Yi and I won’t hold you up any longer." With that, Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi.
Xu Yi nodded, then started walking.
"Xu Yi, are we still heading in that direction?" Lu Ke asked Xu Yi after they walked out.
"Yes, but we’ll take a different route. Going the same way probably won’t yield much." With that, Xu Yi walked a short distance in the direction of the seashore before continuing forward.
After walking for a few hours, Xu Yi and Lu Ke encountered a small herd of mountain goats.
Without saying a word, the two of them took action.
Lu Ke acted first because she had the laser sight, allowing Xu Yi to lock onto the same goat. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"Xu Yi, why don’t mountain goats have points? It’s so unfair, picking on herbivores. Last time, the tree sheep got 2 points!" Lu Ke said somewhat angrily, looking at the goat’s carcass, as she hadn’t received any notifications.
"It seems the organizers want us to take on danger, so hunting herbivores doesn’t earn us points. That tree sheep could gnaw through a tree trunk; if it bit us, it could break our bones," Xu Yi explained, thinking there was no other reason than that.
"So, what do we do now?" Lu Ke looked around. It wasn’t noon yet, and if they went back now, they could be back at camp by 2:00.
This means they wouldn’t be able to go out hunting in the afternoon. The time would be too short to cover much distance.
It wouldn’t be feasible to continue hunting while carrying a goat’s carcass either.
It would be too exhausting.
"It’s okay, I’ll carry it; it’s only seventy to eighty pounds, not heavy." With that, Xu Yi pulled out the crossbow arrow and handed it to Lu Ke.
Lu Ke looked at Xu Yi, then silently put away the crossbow arrow.
For Xu Yi, that weight was indeed insignificant.
Xu Yi picked up the goat and the two continued exploring.
They only had 15 points so far, so Xu Yi hoped to earn a few more today.
Even with a goat on his back, their speed was unaffected.
"Xu Yi, that’s the place where we first appeared, right?"
From a mountaintop, Lu Ke remembered she and Xu Yi had been there before.
"Yes, it’s where we landed." Xu Yi put down the goat and nodded.
"Then that big forest over there should have more animals, right?" Lu Ke pointed in another direction, a place they hadn’t explored yet.
"Certainly, but there could be other groups. We still don’t know how big this island is." Xu Yi pulled out his dagger, preparing to slice some meat off the goat to cook a midday meal.
"Eventually, this place will become our main hunting ground?" With that, Lu Ke couldn’t help but glance back at Xu Yi.
The areas they had searched before hadn’t yielded many wild animals. While that didn’t mean none lived there, the chances of encountering them were low.
To earn points, entering new areas might make it easier.
"Most likely, yes, so I want to set up a simple camp nearby." Xu Yi spoke while cutting off one of the goat’s legs.
If they could find a water source, he wouldn’t mind relocating the camp here.
Because of the presence of Wang Jin and Lu Yao, that patch of woods was increasingly insufficient for their needs.
If it were only a question of food, it wouldn’t be an issue for a few more months.
But now, they needed more than just food; they needed points.
So, they had to go out.
If they used this as a center, traveling back and forth between the camp and here would take over 6 hours a day.
Sparing those 6 hours, it wouldn’t take 5 days to set up a new camp.
If it was just a simple camp, two or three days might be enough.
