Leanna-Chapter 183: [Epilogue 3.2]
A week later
Cain and Leanna were walking out of the mall towards their car while Cain assisted his wife every step of the way. Four men came out behind them all have mountains of paper bags in each hand to the point that their faces were obscure by the amount of things they carried.
Cain almost emptied the mall to appease his wife since Leanna was having a tantrum again, saying her husband didn’t love her because he was too busy with work that he didn’t take her out anymore even though they just went touring the other day.
"My love, do you want to go to another mall?"
Cain continued to coax, not minding his wife’s tantrum the least. If ever, he found her funny and adorable. Only this time, when his wife was pregnant that he could see this side of her. After her pregnancy and when her hormones went back to normal, he couldn’t see that side of her again.
He even taped her whole pregnancy in secret.
I’m only doing what a loving husband would do.
Now I have another thing to blackmail her later.
The corner of his lips twitched in an evil smirk.
Leanna lowered her head, eyes droopy, cheeks puffy, and mouth pouty.
"No . . . I’m tired . . ."
Cain’s eyes melted. She was adorable that it was almost a sin!
"Alright, let’s go home and rest."
Cain’s hand that was about to caress his wife’s cheeks stopped mid-air when he sensed that something was not right. His senses, which were honed throughout the years, were warning him of dangers.
He glanced left and right, eyes narrowing while his senses heightened. Around more than twenty meters from them, he spotted a silhouette of a man who was running at high speed towards their direction. He was holding a gun, aiming towards them.
Nixon Mandeville!
Even before Nixon could close in, a gunshot shocked the whole place, and Nixon laid flat on the ground with a hole in his head.
AaahhHH!!
The people screamed and scattered in all directions. Chaos erupted with that single sound.
Cain’s eyes narrowed at the dead man, lying twenty meters away from them. His snipers and hidden guards have strict orders to shoot to kill anyone who would cause them even the slightest bit of harm.
Even though the man was dead, Cain continued to watch Nixon’s corpse, a nagging feeling hitting his chest.
His pupils turned into a dot as he shielded his wife, embracing her tight, protecting her little body with his.
"Stay back!"
BOOM!
No one knew what happened, but Nixon’s body exploded, and the earth shook, and the glass shattered while cars and fragments flew everywhere from the explosion.
Dead people scattered on the ground. Glass, objects, and debris were flying everywhere while the public screamed and ran in all directions.
It happened in just seconds.
Cain and Leanna where in a safe distance from the explosion, so they were not implicated. But it didn’t mean that they were still safe as shattered objects flew from every direction.
At this moment, in that very spec of time, Leanna saw something flying towards them. Without even knowing it, her body moved on its own, turning at the right moment.
And what happened next was a blur. The woman in Cain’s arms gained strength, turning their bodies around, and the next thing he knew, Leanna was in his arms.
Her beautiful face was so pale, and blood flowed from her lips. There were glass shards stuck on her back while a large metal plate pierced her soft skin.
"LEANNA!"
----
"I’m sorry, Mr. Fay. Your wife is in critical condition. We have to remove the glass and the metal plate from her body and patch her wounds. If not . . . she will continue to suffer from blood loss and other complications."
The doctor explained in layman’s terms as best as he could while he held a waiver on his shaking hands.
"And it seems there is internal damage as well judging by the amount of blood she’s bleeding. If we don’t do a cesarean now to remove the babies, I’m afraid something will happen to them. But doing the operation while your wife is like this . . . I’m sorry . . . we can only save one . . ."
The doctor remained grounded as he explained in a calm tone even though he wanted to run away from the cold man’s demonic face.
Cain closed his eyes tight.
He was having a hard time believing that this was happening. They were just enjoying a while ago, shopping to their heart’s content –– but now . . .
Leanna was lying in a hospital bed inside the operating room on the brink of life and death.
Is this . . . Is this my karma for my sins?
But why?!
If you wanted to hurt someone, let it be me!
I should take all the blame! Not her!
Cain felt weak. Never in his life that he was so weak and helpless. He slumped to the ground as he held his wife’s hand while his other hand wiped away the sweat from her forehead. His frosty eyes were moist, remaining lock in those deep brown poles.
"Can she . . . can she still give birth in the future?"
Upon Cain’s words, Leanna’s tears fell. She knew what her husband’s decision was.
The doctor hesitated. "The procedure is complicated, and we haven’t scanned the patient for any more internal damages since we don’t have the alley of time. Judging from the wounds and the operation we are about to do . . . I’m afraid her chances are slim to none."
Cain closed his eyes tight once more.
He knew what his decision was.
Even if his life or anyone else for that matter, even if his own children’s life . . .
No one is more important than her.
They could still have children without Leanna actually bearing one. They could have many ways in the future. Technologies were growing at a fast pace.
As long as she lives, my . . . our future is limitless.
Cain opened his mouth when Leanna’s weak voice croaked in the room.
"My . . . ba . . . bies . . . save . . ."
Those words were like a death sentence to Cain. The next thing he knew, tears were falling from his eyes.
Leanna watched her husband in utter despair. She knew she didn’t have long to live. She could feel it.
Time was no longer in their hands. She mustered all her strength and forced out the words amidst the numbing pain.
"Cain, if you . . . kill our child . . . I . . . never . . . for . . . give . . . you . . ."
"Leanna, I’m not willing . . . I’m not willing . . . Don’t do this to me."
Cain kneeled there. Just kneeled there, not reacting at all.
Something was shattering.
The woman he had spent his life with in pure bliss. The woman who melted his frozen heart. The woman he had promised to make her happy for the rest of her life. The woman he had pledged to spend eternity forever . . . she was going to die.
Pain.
Agonizing pain quaked his entire body. Pain that made him feel nauseous and dizzy. Pain that drove him insane. Pain that compelled him to laugh. Forced him to shout, forced him to kill himself to join her . . . but no words came.
For years, he had endured pain in his childhood. For the whole seventeen years, he had endured the pain, the scars, the torture, the physical and emotional trauma. But the pain he was feeling now was a thousand times greater than he had ever encountered. A pain that would stay with him no matter how time would pass.
Cain didn’t say anything as he stared at Leanna’s face. Memorizing every detail. Taking in as much as he can. He didn’t even know when he nodded.
The doctors did what they had to do. Different people all in white were running to and fro in a hurry all to save the babies in the young girl’s stomach.
Cain was held by someone, dragging him to the side so the doctors could work. But he was numb, not seeing anyone, not hearing anything. He didn’t even know his hands no longer held hers.
All his senses were on her and her alone.
Her deep brown glazy eyes. Her long thick lashes. Her pale cheeks and kissable lips. Her small perky nose. Her pastel-colored hair. Her white porcelain skin.
Flashes of memories came rushing in waves drowning him in a sea of anguish.
The first time he saw her at freshly milk café. Their first date in NYC downtown and central park. His first stolen kiss from her while she was sleeping. Them living together in New Haven. All the memories they shared during these past years. His ever so dreamed marriage with her. The day he had been waiting for the moment he laid eyes on her, making love for the first time. Their funny pleasurable joyous moments during their honeymoon. Followed by the adorable, quirky months of her pregnancy.
Then her last words . . .
. . . and the last beep of her heart.
