Last Ruler Of The Empty Throne-Chapter 131: Unexpected story
Laura was undeniably beautiful. Though not quite at Cynthia’s level, she was on par with Jenny. Her chocolate skin, braided hair cascading down her back, and an increasingly refined physique due to evolution only amplified her beauty. At some point, she had discarded her glasses when her vision became perfect, elevating her appearance even further.
Jon, however, didn’t dwell on her looks. He had already seen Amelia, and compared to her, Laura was still far from reaching that level.
Then, unexpectedly—
"Jon..." Laura’s voice cut through the silence.
"Hm?" He turned slightly, noting the seriousness in her tone.
"Do you hate me?" she asked.
"Eh?" Jon’s eyes widened in feigned shock. In reality, he had sensed her emotions with his ’Mind World’ ability, so her question wasn’t entirely unexpected. Still, it was better to play dumb, considering he wasn’t certain what had led to this moment.
"W-Why would you ask that?" He discreetly checked to ensure Robin and Victor weren’t listening, realizing Laura had already blocked them from hearing the conversation.
"Since the first day I met you, even when you helped me level up and issued orders, you never really looked at me. Not that I want special attention, but at least some sense of closeness." She paused before continuing,
"Imagine this, I’m your legion leader, yet he knows nothing about me. And after paying closer attention, I realized it’s not just me. Jenny and Cynthia... you barely know anything about us, and we don’t really know you either."
Jon fell into brief contemplation and fell into short realization. ’Now that I think about it, I don’t really know them beyond their names.’
"You don’t know our goals, our beliefs, or what we even want," Laura said quietly, finishing her point.
Jon exhaled before answering. "After Tunde’s death, I acquired a skill that made me instinctively distance myself from others while being overly protective of those close to me." He recalled the moment he first obtained that skill.
Back then, he didn’t even feel the need to share his struggles with Jenny and Cynthia, it was as if the skill was actively pushing him away from forming attachments.
"It wasn’t until recently that I started feeling the need to talk more," he admitted. "And if you’re talking about meeting you before Tunde’s death, I was actually stunned. Would you believe it?"
"What?" Laura asked, looking surprised.
"In school, I wanted to talk to you at least once. But before I could, the apocalypse happened," Jon said, half-smiling.
Laura tilted her head. "So, if the apocalypse hadn’t happened, would you have spoken to me?"
"No, the real question is, if I had approached you, would you have spoken to me?" He smirked slightly before adding, "And just so you know, I saw you reject dozens of guys."
Laura opened her mouth to argue but found herself at a loss for words.
"Alright," Jon said, shifting gears. "Tell me about yourself."
She hesitated for a moment before finally speaking.
"I wanted to become a medical doctor. My family was well-off, both my parents were doctors, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. But there was something strange... They always made me use a different last name from theirs. At first, I thought I was adopted, but after secretly checking my hospital records, I found out I wasn’t. Still, I trusted them and didn’t question it, thinking they had genuine reasons for it."
Jon listened intently as she took a deep breath before continuing.
"Then one day, I came home from boarding school... and my house was gone."
Jon’s gaze sharpened.
"The entire building had been burned to the ground," she said, voice hollow. "I was told it was a fire accident, but then few months later, some neighbors came forward. They told me they had seen masked individuals circling the house before the fire."
Jon remained silent, letting her speak at her own pace.
"I didn’t know who those residents were, however, they made me join them. They were in a secret organization and had been trying to catch that masked group for years now. So, I decided to stay and use them to find out more about the mask people, the people that hurt my family and made me alone. Among the things I knew, I then knew my parents were in charge of some type of experiments and were killed because it was successful, and they didn’t want to leave loose ends."
Laura’s fists clenched. "But the more time I spent more time with those secret organizations, I realized the masked group was bigger than I knew, they were spread across the world, and their roots and history were so deep, just destroying them would just beget more of them. They specialized in terrorism, assassination, chaos, money laundering, and all forms of crime. Finally, when our agency group finally got a lead for the first time in years, our target was an executive of that group.
After a bloody slaughter, he was caught, and fortunately, we got information out of him. However, who would have thought we had spies among us, before long we were found and that group attacked us and massacred us to the last man, even the spy was murdered. I got out luckily with the help of some soldiers, and with me was also a flash drive.
After checking the details of the flash drive, it said something about targeting Palflic. And since I knew some of the locations of secret funds, I enrolled in the university to protect them and to find out the target they were trying to catch. Thankfully, I was able to get close to the target to be eliminated before whatever plan was executed, and unlike others, this fall was a blessing as it disrupted their plans. Maybe they wouldn’t even bother about the plan again.
But I can’t help but think this apocalypse is also another step for them. Those fearless souls who didn’t fear killing suddenly getting abilities, they would even grow and come out more." Laura sighed at the problem.
’Is my problem like this?’ Suddenly, he felt his own problems were just light in comparison.
"So, your goal is to destroy this group." He was still sympathizing with her. A little girl was thrown into a life situation and had no choice but to take it head-on.
"Have found the name of this group, and besides, who was this target?"
Laura exhaled and spoke,
"Phew...You should know them, Krad."
BOOOMMM...
His mind suddenly went into disarray. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Krad...Joe...Alex
Those were the things he thought of anytime the Krad name came up. However, that wasn’t all,
"And the target was...Cynthia."
