Mei Mei did not expect to hear that name coming up in this conversation. He was active in the media lately, continuing his criticism of Mingzhe. She had assumed that her mother would use the affair against him first but it seemed like there was another ace up her sleeve.
"Did you think that I would go down the affair route?" Chi Lian asked her. "I am guessing that Junjie told you about it. If he did not...."
Mei Mei nodded. "He told me. I know all about the Empress and her uncle lover and the sordid gross tale. Hui Zhenting is so shameless and disgusting. He is running his mouth and grieving more than Junjie who is the legal widower. How is that adulterer tied in all this?"
Chi Lian held up her phone to Mei Mei’s face and showed her a picture of Ai Li working in what appeared to be a casino. There were other people in the picture six men and two women who were sitting around a table, playing cards.
They were well dressed and Mei Mei recognized them all. Three were wealthy CEO’S, one was a mayor, prince Long Bo was also there and Hui Zhenting was the sixth.
Ai Li was holding a bottle of wine, pouring it into the glass of the female mayor. From the way she was dressed, she appeared to be a waitress.
"Mayor Shang Lili holds a regular card game with some of her biggest private supporters. During those games, they talk shop and plan how to help each other elevate financially and politically." Chi Lian gestured that they continue their search of the house.
"What a dangerous job." Mei Mei muttered.
Chi Lian agreed. "At high stakes games like those, sometimes people hear what they should not or see things they were never meant to see. Sometimes, a beautiful young woman catches the eye of the wrong person."
Mei Mei thought about the men in the picture. Each of them was wealthy or powerful in their own right. Ai Li would not have been able to resist if they expressed interest in her. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
"She had just graduated and had yet to find a job so her friend convinced her to work for Mayor Shang Lili. Detectives did not discover this." Chi Lian continued. "Ai Li’s mother mentioned that she had worked part time before joining Kirin Energy but she did not know what her daughter did. I dug deeper and found this. I don’t know if it is connected to Ai Li’s death but she died a month after attending this game and one week into starting a new job at Kirin Energy."
Mei Mei hissed, "Mom, Yu Kaiyang is among the CEO’s at the table, right?"
"Ding ding!" Chi Lian’s lips widened into a broad smile. "Yu Kaiyang is the nephew of Yu Peizi, the CEO of Kirin Energy. The fact that only weeks after attending this game, Ai Li got a job at Kirin is very suspicious. I think something happened."
"But if it is related to Yu Kaiyang, then Hui Zhenting won’t be implicated unless he covered up the crime somehow." Mei Mei reasoned out.
Chi Lian put her hands on her shoulders and let out a belly deep laugh. "My girl, have you forgotten that sometimes association alone is more damaging than anything else? A minister lost his position because he tried to buy sperm for his niece."
Mei Mei realized what her mother intended to do. It was to use the power of public opinion to bring down Hui Zhenting. Innocent or guilty, his career was going to take a hit when he became a suspect in covering up crimes for the rich.
"So, what else have you found in this house that might give us a clue?" Chi Lian asked Mei Mei.
They were now standing in the bedroom which was not as empty as the rest of the house. The same bed from the crime scene was still there as were the sheets which had turned brown.
"System scan." Mei Mei ordered as she moved around, pretending to be looking for clues.
In her mind, she laughed because she had outsmarted her mother. She would show her who the better detective was between them.
[Detected two buttons in the mattress.]
To sell what she was doing, Mei Mei downloaded an infrared app on her phone and pretended that she was scanning the room.
Chi Lian smiled stealth-fully as she watched Mei Mei donning gloves, pinching her nose and rifling over the mattress until she found something pressed in the foam. She came up with a triumphant smile on her face. "Look mom, I found something."
She looked excited, her eyes were wide and eager like those of a child seeking praise.
"Good girl." Chi Lian said to her. "The first button looks like the others on the dress that Ai Li was wearing when her body was found. The second one definitely didn’t come from that dress."
As Chi Lian put away the buttons, Mei Mei continued her search through the bedroom.
"This button has a picture of a panther, it is from the jackets that those members of the Black Command Unit wear." Chi Lian declared. "With this, we can be certain that someone under Hui Zhenting’s command was involved.
"I can’t find anything else." Mei Mei told her.
Chi Lian put her hands together. "I guess we are done here. The next job is mine, I need to find out which cars drove or flew anywhere close to this area around the time of death."
"Didn’t the police check that?" Mei Mei frowned.
"The police are not me." Chi Lian responded proudly. If Hui Zhenting had been involved, he had obviously tampered with the traffic footage.
Their investigation of the house was wrapped up and they left the house. When they returned to the car, Mingzhu was sleeping on Jun Yi’s stomach and they were still watching the movie. One of them had opened a bag of milk and honey biscuits which they were both munching on slowly.
The carpet of the car around them was littered with chips and biscuit crumbs. Two small sachets of organic flavored milk had also been thrown down carelessly.
"There is no such thing as organic flavored milk." Chi Lian told them as she started the car. "And you two are not pigs. Why are you using my car as your dumping ground?"
Jun Yi groaned in response, sounding like an old generator that was running out of life.
Mingzhu raised her head like a lazy lizard and said in a childish voice. "Mom, I want a baby brother."
