Chapter 99: The Unreliable Future Brother-in-Law

"What exactly is that medicine of yours?" Su Hongchen’s face turned cold, and he pressed his foot onto the nurse who was still trying to crawl out.

But this time, the nurse refused to speak no matter what.

At this moment, a comrade from the military walked into the room. He paused when he saw the situation inside and immediately took control of the nurse on the floor.

Su Hongchen recounted everything that had just happened and handed over the glass medicine vial for them to find out what it contained. He retained the syringe to prevent any further issues.

Soon, the hospital’s director and several attending doctors arrived.

They carefully examined Su Xiaoxiao’s still bleeding wound. They all mumbled in confusion, "This shouldn’t be happening; it’s just a small skin cut. Why is it still bleeding?"

"Never mind me; first, check my brother’s wound," Su Xiaoxiao, with a stern face, pulled her hand back.

Hearing this, the medical staff immediately checked Su Hongchen’s wound. When they removed the bandage, they couldn’t help but gasp at the sight. In theory, after a week, the wound should have healed. However, not only was it still bleeding, but it also seemed to be infected.

Clearly, the medicine and their current conditions were related.

"We’re not certain what that substance is, so we need to wait for the lab results from the military hospital to determine the treatment plan," the hospital director, bowing his head, replied with guilt, unable to meet Su Hongchen’s gaze.

"So, you’re just going to let my sister’s blood keep flowing now? She’s so small; how much blood can she afford to lose?" Su Hongchen gritted his teeth, demanding an answer.

"We’ve already administered hemostatic drugs to her, and it’s getting better now. We’ll give her another dose, and that might stop the bleeding," the doctor quickly reassured.

"Might?" Su Hongchen’s expression showed his dissatisfaction with that answer.

At that moment, Jiang Yexun, returning with two lunchboxes in hand. Seeing the crowd gathered outside the room, his heart immediately leaped into his throat. He pushed everyone aside and sternly asked, "Why are so many people here? What happened?"

Before anyone could reply, his gaze immediately fell on Su Xiaoxiao, whose wrist wrapped in bandages.

"Little educated youth!" Jiang Yexun exclaimed with shock as he knelt down beside the young girl.

He carelessly placed the lunchboxes on the floor and reached out to inspect Su Xiaoxiao’s wound, fearing that he might inadvertently cause her more pain with his rough hands. Su Xiaoxiao, sensing his familiar presence, breathed a sigh of relief and leaned her soft body against him.

"Why did you take so long to come?" Su Xiaoxiao complained softly, her voice sounding weak and helpless.

Jiang Yexun, looking at her pitiable and distressed appearance, couldn’t help but feel his heart aching. "It’s my fault! I shouldn’t have left you here alone." His eyes were a little red as he gently blew on Su Xiaoxiao’s wrist. However, the crimson hue on her bandage only seemed to deepen.

He lifted his gaze to Su Hongchen, who was nearby, and stared at him with a stern and icy look. "What’s going on? I’ve only been gone for four hours, and this is how you’ve taken care of little educated youth?"

"It was my mistake," Su Hongchen said with guilt.

He felt sorry for his country, which had invested so much in his training, and he also put his little sister in danger. There was a living person with malicious intent came in and out of his hospital room daily, and he had failed to notice any of it.

"What’s the use of saying that now? How’s Xiaoxiao’s hand? Why hasn’t the bleeding stopped?" Jiang Yexun asked with a deep and controlled tone, suppressing the urge to punch Su Hongchen.

"Because there is a substance on the wound that hasn’t been identified yet. The military hospital is conducting an analysis, and we should have results soon," the person nearby explained hastily.

Jiang Yexun nearly wanted to call them useless, but Su Xiaoxiao tugged at him gently.

"Don’t be in a hurry, Brother Yexun. No one wanted this to happen. It’s just a minor skin wound, and it will heal soon. Don’t be mad at my brother either; he is harmed too. What matters now is to solve the problem."

Jiang Yexun didn’t want her to worry, so he took a couple of deep breaths to calm himself. But the more he thought about it, the angrier he got.

"Your brother is an idiot! He’s to blame for this! How many times has he been injured in the army? The rate of recovery for his other wounds was different from this one, and he didn’t even suspect anything? If he had realized it earlier, you wouldn’t have been affected!"

With such sharp words, Jiang Yexun’s frustration showed. Su Hongchen’s colleagues, on the other hand, couldn’t bear the tone of the conversation.

Just as they were about to argue, Su Hongchen intervened.

"This is my fault," he admitted, looking at Jiang Yexun.

Su Xiaoxiao, who had been in fear all this time, looked at her brother and then reached out to pull Jiang Yexun back, wanting to remind him not to be so presumptuous. After all, there would be a price to pay when this was all over.

Jiang Yexun sighed reluctantly, casting a brief glance at the girl, whose face full of distress. However, observing the chaotic scene in the room, he knew that she probably hadn’t mentioned the matter they agreed she would tell.

This led Jiang Yexun to shift his gaze back to Su Hongchen.

"I have something to discuss with you. Get them out of here."

Su Hongchen was puzzled for a moment, but seeing his little sister hiding in the man’s arms, he realized they must have something important to discuss. After giving a signal to those around him, they all filed out of the room and closed the door.

Once alone, Su Hongchen looked at Jiang Yexun.

Jiang Yexun briefly recounted the strange events on the train with the female comrade.

Su Hongchen’s brow furrowed with each word he heard. In the end, he had two deep wrinkles on his forehead.

"How can you be so sure that was the sound of a gun being loaded?" he asked Su Xiaoxiao in disbelief.

"So, you don’t trust your own sister?" Jiang Yexun’s anger flared, and he almost reached for Su Hongchen’s collar.
