Chapter 536: The Young Couple Taken to the Mansion

Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun exchanged glances before getting up to open the door.

To their surprise, standing outside were Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Wang, both with guilty expressions on their faces.

"Xiaoxiao, Yexun, you two have been wronged. It’s our fault for not managing the people in the family properly, which gave them the chance to secretly bully you," Grandma Wang said, grabbing Su Xiaoxiao’s hand with a look of deep remorse.

"It’s nothing, we haven’t really been bullied," Su Xiaoxiao pretended to be confused for a moment before shaking her head, trying to act magnanimous.

But the more she acted this way, the more it seemed to pain Grandma Wang and Grandpa Zhang.

"Don’t worry, from now on, they won’t dare to bully you again," Grandma Wang promised, her tone tinged with sadness.

Su Xiaoxiao continued to act puzzled.

"Grandma Wang, did you talk to them?"

"Not only did Peng Huijing commit a crime, but that child of her, Hanyu, made a huge mistake too," Grandma Wang’s eyes reddened as she spoke of the matter.

"Grandma Wang, don’t be sad. What exactly happened in the past couple of days?" Su Xiaoxiao quickly took Grandma Wang’s hand, leading her into the room to sit down.

After Grandma Wang wiped away a tear, she began to recount everything that had happened recently.

Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun had already heard the news, but they were both still momentarily stunned. Soon, however, they exchanged confused glances with Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Wang, silently questioning them.

Didn’t they already receive a warning about this?

How did things end up like this?

Grandpa Zhang sighed helplessly.

"When you warned us, I didn’t take it seriously. I just had the guards look into it. Who would’ve thought that as soon as they started investigating, things would have already escalated. But it’s all deserved—he got what he deserved!"

"So now, Grandpa Zhang, what do you plan to do? Gambling is illegal now, and I heard that if they’re caught, the punishment is serious," Su Xiaoxiao asked, directly bringing up the issue she was most concerned about.

"If the law says they should be punished, then they’ll be punished. The country has developed to this point with great difficulty, and we can’t let our family’s matters destroy those regulations and make people lose trust," Grandpa Zhang replied solemnly, his voice firm.

"But Zhang Hanyu is the only grandson of the Zhang family. Are you really willing to let him face the consequences?" Su Xiaoxiao pressed.

Grandma Wang shook her head, her eyes reddening again.

"As painful as it is, we have to do it. He brought this upon himself!"

"Exactly! In front of the law, what is our Zhang family? There are so many people with the Zhang surname in the country. Even if our family loses this child, it won’t be the end of the Zhang name!" Grandpa Zhang exclaimed, his voice growing louder.

Su Xiaoxiao felt that this was just self-deception.

But Zhang Hanyu and Peng Huijing definitely deserved to be punished as severely as possible.

That was the only way to repay the efforts Jiang Yexun had put into his plan.

With those two locked away, at least two potential enemies would be removed from the equation.

Noticing Su Xiaoxiao biting her lip, her expression slightly awkward, Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Wang continued,

"We came here today to thank you both and to ask if you’d be willing to come live at our house for a while. Now that Peng Huijing and Zhang Hanyu are gone, no one will be able to cause you trouble anymore."

Upon hearing this, both Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun froze.

Neither of them could quite understand why Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Wang would make such an offer.

After all, the family had just gone through a huge mess. How could they still be in the mood to invite them over?

Were they completely dismissing the significance of the mother and son’s actions, or were they simply too carefree?

Or was there something deeper behind this invitation?

A flash of suspicion crossed Su Xiaoxiao’s mind, and her heart tightened.

But leaving now would seem odd and overly defensive, so she decided to stay for the time being.

"It’s no trouble at all. You should come with us. We were planning on having you stay with us before, but with those two troublesome people in the house, it wasn’t possible. Now that they’re gone, there won’t be anyone causing trouble," Grandma Wang urged, her voice hopeful as she clung to Su Xiaoxiao’s hand.

There was another reason for Grandma Wang and Grandpa Zhang’s invitation.

Since the recent turmoil, despite their decision to stay out of it, their hearts still felt empty.

They longed for the comfort of having Xiaoxiao and Yexun around to ease their unease.

For reasons they couldn’t quite explain, they felt a deep bond with these two young people.

Perhaps it was just fate.

"Then we’ll trouble Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Wang for the next few days," Su Xiaoxiao said sweetly.

Grandma Wang immediately brightened up, her face lighting up with a smile.

The group quickly packed their things and left their room to head to the mansion.

As they passed through the central garden, they noticed some elderly men playing chess and some women chatting.

Their eyes were fixed on the newcomers, their gazes curious and filled with suspicion.

Clearly, news of Zhang Hanyu and Peng Huijing’s trouble had spread throughout the mansion.

As the old saying goes: Good news doesn’t travel far, but bad news spreads like wildfire.

Grandma Wang patted Su Xiaoxiao’s hand lightly, giving her a worried look.

"You don’t need to worry about them. Peng Huijing and Hanyu’s matters will not concern you. If anyone brings it up, just tell them you don’t know anything."

"Got it."

Su Xiaoxiao wasn’t interested in causing trouble with the people in the mansion. She simply nodded and agreed.

They arrived at the Zhang family mansion.

Upon entering, they found Zhang Zhiyuan sitting in the living room, reading the newspaper and drinking tea.

"Uncle Zhang, why are you here? Don’t you need to work today?" Su Xiaoxiao asked, feigning curiosity.

But in her mind, she was already running through dozens of scenarios, wondering if they were plotting something against her and Jiang Yexun.

She could feel a cold sweat on her back, and even the fine hairs on her forehead were standing on end.
