Chapter 367: He Hongni Becomes an Unstable Factor

Once only Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun were left in the hallway, Jiang Yexun immediately moved closer to her.

The sudden proximity made Su Xiaoxiao’s legs feel weak. Despite every fiber of her being wanting to lean on Jiang Yexun, she resisted. This was the police station, and if someone saw them, it could lead to accusations of inappropriate conduct. She quickly bit her tongue to regain some composure.

After finally regaining clarity, she looked up, her doe-like eyes sparkling as she gazed at the man beside her. Jiang Yexun’s eyes darkened, and he clenched his fist tightly before speaking in a hoarse voice, "Xiaoxiao, things are escalating. Whatever happens next, promise me you won’t run around. If there’s anything you need, even groceries, tell me."

The situation had become dangerous. They had disrupted years of planning, and those spies wouldn’t just let it go.

"You be careful too. If they act impulsively, they might retaliate against you," Su Xiaoxiao said, her worry evident.

Originally, she had only intended to expose the person who harmed her family in the previous life. She never expected to uncover such a massive operation. If everything went as planned and they caught everyone involved, those spies would be furious.

However, knowing her enemies were unhappy made Su Xiaoxiao quite pleased.

"I know. But lately, I’ve felt like my body is getting stronger. My senses have sharpened, too—He Xingzhi feels the same," Jiang Yexun said with a reassuring smile.

Upon hearing this, Su Xiaoxiao became visibly more nervous. She discreetly examined Jiang Yexun, confirming he wasn’t hinting at anything deeper before relaxing a little. She then laughed and said, "I’ve been feeling better too. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have noticed that man earlier today."

At this, the softness on Jiang Yexun’s face disappeared slightly.

"You were so brave! You didn’t tell your family or even me about such a dangerous thing?" Jiang Yexun’s tone held a trace of scolding.

Su Xiaoxiao pouted, "Come on, it’s over now. The result turned out well, didn’t it?"

Jiang Yexun had no way of staying angry at her. He couldn’t scold her, nor show her a stern face. Instead, he bent down to meet her gaze directly.

"Promise me, from now on, you won’t take risks like that on your own," Jiang Yexun’s voice was firm, his deep eyes filled with worry for her.

Su Xiaoxiao hadn’t been too concerned, but seeing him like this made her heart tighten.

"I promise, if I notice anything like that again, I’ll tell you right away," she swore, holding up her hand.

Relieved, Jiang Yexun’s lips curled into a fond smile. Just as he was about to playfully flick Su Xiaoxiao’s nose, the door to the next room opened.

He Xingzhi walked out, red-eyed, holding He Hongni’s small hand.

"Did you manage to calm her down?" Su Xiaoxiao asked curiously.

He Xingzhi hesitated, then shook his head. "She believes I didn’t sell her, but she still wants her adoptive parents. She doesn’t want to be called He Hongni anymore."

"Does she think the name He Hongni doesn’t sound good?" Su Xiaoxiao softened her voice, trying to coax the girl.

The little girl clung to He Xingzhi’s hand, staring warily at Su Xiaoxiao. But since Su Xiaoxiao had a naturally sweet and gentle appearance, it made her more approachable, especially when she spoke softly to children.

The girl muttered, "That name was chosen by my parents. If I change it, they won’t recognize me when they’re released."

Su Xiaoxiao knew that there was no chance her adoptive parents would ever be released. But she couldn’t bear to say anything that would upset the child now that they had finally calmed her down.

"Don’t worry. From now on, you’ll be with your brother, and we’ll take good care of you. You’ll live a better life," Su Xiaoxiao knelt in front of He Hongni and gently patted her head.

The little girl was adorable. Her face was still flushed from crying, making her look even more endearing.

"Big sister, can I bring my friends with me too?" He Hongni asked, her bright, expectant eyes looking up at Su Xiaoxiao.

This request made Su Xiaoxiao feel guilty and heartbroken, but no matter how much she didn’t want to disappoint the child, she couldn’t agree to this.

In fact, if He Hongni hadn’t been He Xingzhi’s biological sister, no matter how cute she was, Su Xiaoxiao would never have allowed her to stay with them. The child’s deep attachment to the spies and her strong bond with the other children made her a potential ticking time bomb.

Thankfully, they weren’t in government positions, so there were no state secrets to worry about. And Su Xiaoxiao had complete faith in Jiang Yexun. If he could give up on Luo Shanzhu, he definitely wouldn’t let a bigger threat like He Hongni stay too close to He Xingzhi.

Su Xiaoxiao guessed that they would eventually arrange a better path for He Xingzhi, slowly distancing him from this dangerous situation.

Having figured things out, Su Xiaoxiao suddenly felt bad for Jiang Yexun.

"Sister?" He Hongni asked urgently.

Su Xiaoxiao snapped back to reality and, with an apologetic smile, shook her head. "I’m sorry, but they all have their own places to go."

"They have nowhere to go! Their families sold them just like mine did. My parents took care of us all!" He Hongni cried out, becoming agitated again.

Although the girl was undeniably cute, her outbursts were getting difficult for Su Xiaoxiao to handle. Taking a deep breath, Su Xiaoxiao patiently explained, "Just like how you thought you were sold, but it turned out to be a misunderstanding, maybe their parents didn’t sell them either. And your parents made mistakes and have to face the consequences, just like when you make a mistake at home. If they really cared about you, why would they have done something wrong outside?"

He Hongni opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. She couldn’t argue against what Su Xiaoxiao said.

But in her mind, Su Xiaoxiao and the others were still the bad guys who had torn her and her friends away from their parents. She turned her head away in a huff, refusing to talk further.

He Xingzhi awkwardly smiled at Su Xiaoxiao. "Sorry, sister-in-law. Hongni is still too young. She’s been brainwashed by those people, but I’ll teach her properly."

Jiang Yexun frowned in disgust at the little girl.

"Make sure this doesn’t happen again," he said coldly to He Xingzhi, then turned to Su Xiaoxiao. "My mom will take care of her. You don’t need to deal with it."

"Okay," Su Xiaoxiao nodded.

Though she knew the child had been brainwashed by the spies, she didn’t have the patience to straighten out He Hongni’s thoughts. That was He Xingzhi’s responsibility as her brother.

And given how firm He Hongni was, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but worry that the girl might only pretend to change in front of them but could still betray them if she felt sympathy for her former "parents."
