Chapter 305: The Whole Village Divides the Meat

"Jiang Yexun, what do you mean by that? You often go hunting in the mountains, haven’t you ever hunted wild animals? Why didn’t they come down to seek revenge on you? In the end, this is just a coincidence," Jiang Guosheng shouted angrily.

He couldn’t understand how his brother had raised such a child. Even at a time like this, Jiang Yexun was publicly embarrassing his own uncle in front of the entire village.

But Jiang Yexun only raised an eyebrow, looking at him with even more disdain. "I never target young animals."

The villagers were in an uproar at this remark, and their eyes were now filled with hatred as they looked at the Jiang family.

"Jiang Guosheng, we don’t want to argue with you about this anymore. But if any of us are left injured, maimed, or worse, dead, your family will be held responsible!" someone shouted, and the entire village immediately voiced their agreement.

The Old Jiang family panicked. "Why should we be responsible? It’s the wild animals that attacked. If we go hunting in the mountains and come across easy prey like a young wolf, wouldn’t you take it too?"

The villagers, who had been full of righteous anger, suddenly fell silent. If they had encountered a young animal in the mountains, they definitely wouldn’t have let it go. Even if someone warned them it might bring revenge, who could resist the temptation of so much meat?

But the families with injured members weren’t going to agree to just let it go. After some thought, they turned to Leader Chen for guidance.

"Leader, what should we do? We can’t just be injured for nothing. We didn’t do anything wrong!"

Chen Guanghua looked at the injured villagers, his expression stern. "The medical expenses for the injured will be split evenly between the Old Jiang family and the village’s collective funds. While the Old Jiang family is partly to blame, they didn’t know better. From now on, no one is allowed to attack young animals or pregnant females in the mountains."

The village usually used their work points to exchange for grain, and after setting aside the portion that had to be handed over to the government, the surplus was sold to the educated youth or to the grain and oil stations. The village also had a river where they raised fish, and after dividing some among the families, the rest was sold to fund village projects. For example, the road connecting the village to the main road outside had been built with this money in recent years.

But Leader Chen’s decision didn’t sit well with everyone, especially those who weren’t injured and the Old Jiang family.

"Why should we pay? We didn’t do anything wrong, so why should our collective funds be used?" 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Our family didn’t know that young animals shouldn’t be hunted, and there was no rule saying we had to know. Why should we pay half the medical expenses?"

Leader Chen glared at the Old Jiang family in disgust. "If you have any more complaints, then your family should pay for everything."

The Old Jiang family shrank back, too scared to say anything further.

Leader Chen then turned to the others. "This incident was partly accidental, and no one was aware of the risks. Moreover, we can’t guarantee that wild animals won’t come down from the mountains again. I’ll say this upfront: if another wild animal attacks our village and it’s clear that no outsider is involved, the treatment costs will be covered by our village’s funds."

His words left everyone silent. Though it pained them to think about it, no one could guarantee that their own family wouldn’t face such a situation in the future. After considering this, they reluctantly agreed.

The Old Jiang family, realizing there was no room for negotiation, glared at Jiang Yexun with eyes that seemed ready to tear him apart. If it weren’t for this traitorous brat, they wouldn’t have been resented by the village or forced to pay compensation. Moreover, if it weren’t for him and his wife causing trouble and reporting his father, Jiang Guoli wouldn’t have lost his position as the village leader. If Jiang Guoli were still in charge, he would have found a way to absolve them of this mess.

But now, they had no other ideas except to focus on the wolf meat.

"Leader, how will the meat from these twenty-plus wolves be divided?" Jiang Guosheng’s wife suddenly asked.

Wolf meat is similar to dog meat, with each wolf weighing around thirty kilograms. After removing the head, skin, tail, and bony limbs, there would still be around twenty kilograms of pure meat. Dividing that among the families would give each household several kilograms. They couldn’t possibly go through such a disaster and end up with nothing, could they?

Leader Chen, upon hearing her question, was so angry that his beard bristled and his eyes bulged.

"What does this meat have to do with you? Do you think you’ve earned any share of it?"

"What do you mean by that? Are you saying you won’t give us any meat?" Aunt Zhou immediately protested.

Leader Chen sneered, "You’re right; you won’t get any. This meat will only be divided among those who stepped up to protect everyone. The amount will be divided equally per person."

"How is that fair? Normally, the meat is divided equally among everyone!"

"Yes, we went through this terrifying ordeal, and now you’re saying we get nothing?"

Leader Chen glared at the people who were complaining. "If that’s the case, then the next time there’s danger, everyone can just hide and let others risk their lives. Then, when it’s safe, they can come out and demand an equal share. Do you think that’s fair? Who will step up to protect us next time if that’s how we do things?"

The people who had been complaining moved their lips but ultimately fell silent. They were tempted by the meat, but deep down, they knew it wouldn’t be right to let those who had risked their lives go unrewarded.

Finally, everyone turned to Jiang Yexun.

Jiang Yexun looked at Su Hongchen and asked, "Should we just take a few kilos of meat and exchange the rest for the hides?"

Su Hongchen glanced at the wolves. "Do you want to eat it?"

"No," Jiang Yexun replied. He wasn’t picky about food; as long as it provided enough energy and kept him full, that was enough for him.

"Then let’s just take the hides," Su Hongchen said.

"Alright. Leader Chen, my brother-in-law and I won’t take any meat. We’ll exchange our share for all the hides."

"Okay!" Chen Dachang immediately agreed without a second thought.

The others who had fought alongside them had no objections either. Although they had helped, it was Jiang Yexun with his rifle who had truly saved everyone’s lives. Besides, the hides weren’t of much use; if divided, each family would get only a small piece, which would just cause disputes. They’d rather take more meat instead.
