Chapter 230: Chapter 229 The So-Called Dream
After wrapping up matters at Pixar, Adrian quickly rushed back to New York. Not only was the shooting of “The Professional” nearing its end, but Emma had also been left there. If he broke his promise, the little one would inevitably express her dissatisfaction in her own way, and now there was no Atlantic between them.
On one occasion, Adrian had promised the little one that he would spend the evening playing with her, but he had to cancel due to… umm… certain reasons. As a result, from that day on, she would cling to his trouser legs, walking around without wanting him to carry her and pouting with a sulky expression, which became a unique scene in the crew.
It took just over a week for “The Professional” to finally wrap up in New York. The remaining shots weren’t complex, plus the actors had essentially mastered their roles, making the shoot go very smoothly.
As usual, a small party was held after wrapping up, but unfortunately, Natalie declined Adrian’s invitation.
“I’ve fallen behind on a lot of schoolwork, so I need to make up for it,” she explained, her eyes wide and her lips unnaturally curled up, especially since most schools across America were on summer vacation by then.
However, Adrian didn’t call her out and instead reached out to pat her head, which Natalie didn’t shy away from this time.
“Although it’s regrettable, it’s okay,” he said with a smile, “You’re the most talented girl in acting I’ve ever met, Nata. You’ve impressed me profoundly during this period, and I hope we can work together again in the future.”
“Thank you.” Natalie, relieved, was about to leave but then turned back after a sigh, “I want to say, Ed, even though it was due to some issues… I still had many different experiences during this time, and I like acting. Finally, you’re an outstanding director, really.”
She said with a smile, though there was still a hint of complexity in her eyebrows, but the confidence and pride from their first meeting had reappeared on her face.
As they had just finished shooting, Natalie was still sporting a bubble hairstyle, looking adorable, which made Adrian think back to the kiss at the party. However, he didn’t make any disrespectful move and politely saw the girl into the car.
Without Natalie, the party seemed livelier. Having children around—especially girls—limited the extent of boisterousness in many games. Plus, the little one was taken back to the apartment early by Maeve, so everyone had a very openly enjoyable time, and some antics were inevitable.
After wrapping up in New York, Adrian flew directly to Miami. “Bad Boys” had officially started shooting and was taking exterior shots there. Though he trusted Michael Bay and Brokheimer a lot, it was still appropriate to check in. Besides, one of the African-American leads was definitely worth the investment.
It must be said that Brokheimer was indeed an outstanding producer. Although Don Simpson ultimately also bore the producer’s name, the actual affairs were managed by Brokheimer in an orderly manner. Michael just needed to focus on directing. Michael Bay wasn’t yet the powerful commercial director he would become; he duly followed arrangements. The pair had come together quite well since Adrian had brought them together initially, making the atmosphere on set quite harmonious.
As for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the latter was very much like his character, adept at quick talking, and with most black people naturally good at rap and hip hop, he spoke very fast. Coupled with his naturally comical appearance, though he had a temper, he was still very likable.
In contrast, Will Smith was much more composed. Though he also enjoyed joking and rapping, he knew where to draw the line, so he came across as very reliable.
For example, both expressed their respect for Adrian, as he had handpicked them for the roles, but they showed it in completely different ways.
“I guarantee your choice is absolutely correct, Ed. I’ll show you what a real comedy actor is like,” Lawrence, ever talkative, giggled and chattered endlessly, whereas Smith was much more straightforward.
“I really appreciate you giving me this opportunity, Ed,” he said, his expression very serious and earnest, and his tone sincerely conveyed his gratitude. The difference in their approach was quite evident.
It’s no wonder Lawrence’s achievements couldn’t match up to Smith’s. Although there are various factors in play, such as one coming from a black neighborhood and the other from the middle class, you can see the difference in how they conduct themselves.
“Bad Boys” shouldn’t have any problems, Adrian thought as he confidently handed the project over to Michael and Brokheimer. However, he hadn’t anticipated that this prematurely launched movie would bring him a little surprise.

In one of the outdoor scenes shot in Miami, the character Laurie, played by Smith, was searching for clues about a stolen police station drug stash. He asked an acquaintance, a female model, to help him by keeping an eye out for anyone throwing lavish parties. After the model found a lead, she and a friend went to a villa to gather information, only to discover that one of the thieves was there. The gang’s leader, unhappy with the thief’s flamboyant celebration before the heat had died down, showed up at the villa and killed him, as well as the model who accidentally walked into the line of fire. Fortunately, her friend escaped, remembered the faces of the culprits, and ran out to find Laurie.
The model was Black, and originally, Adrian couldn’t remember the actress who played this Black model, but now, he knew her.
“Excuse me, sir, I didn’t see you standing there, I’m really sorry,” the lady said as she hurriedly apologized and pulled out a tissue to try to wipe the water stain on Adrian’s clothes.
“No worries, no worries,” Adrian waved his hand to stop her, then took a tissue from her and started to wipe himself off, “I wasn’t watching where I was going either, so don’t blame yourself.”
“But still… I’m very sorry, Mr. Adrian,” the lady said, slightly flustered.
“I should be the one saying that; it looks like you got quite splashed as well,” Adrian remarked, pointing at her clothes.
“Oh, yes.” She hurriedly took out another tissue to clean her own clothes.
“You know me,” Adrian then said.
“Who in this crew doesn’t know you?” she replied with a smile, slightly complimentarily. Her white teeth, though starkly contrasting with her skin, had their own type of beauty.
“Nobody’s ever told you, but you have a beautiful smile,” Adrian crumpled the tissue in his hand and tossed it into a nearby trash can, smiling at her, “like a ‘Black Pearl.'”
“Black Pearl?” she raised an eyebrow, then coughed lightly, “Thank you for the compliment.”
“Let me think…” Adrian gestured, watching her for several minutes until she seemed unable to bear his gaze any longer. Then, suddenly clapping his hands, a small surprised expression appeared on his face, “Halle Berry, right?”
The lady was slightly taken aback but quickly laughed, shrugged her shoulders, and spread her hands, “It’s not strange that you know my name, Mr. Adrian, you have the cast list, don’t you?”
“First, please call me Adrian or Ed; second, I haven’t really looked at the other actors’ lists yet. What I thought of was Eddie Murphy’s ‘Boomerang.’ Frankly, your performance in it was memorable,” Adrian said seriously.
Halle Berry opened her mouth in surprise, a look of joy and complexity on her face: “You’ve seen that movie, Mr. Adrian… I mean, Ed?”
“Of course, I’ve seen many movies; I always remember those actors who deliver outstanding performances,” Adrian nodded.
“You really have a way with words, Ed,” Halle said, brushing a strand of hair past her ear.
“Hey, I’m just speaking the truth, you captured that character’s crazy infatuation with someone else perfectly, I could easily count the ways…” Adrian started counting off on his fingers as he spoke.
In a corner of the set, a young man and a female actor were laughing intimately with each other, the beautiful Black Pearl occasionally letting out a light laugh. Those who didn’t know would think they got along very well, those who did know… (To be continued, for more please visit www.qidian.com, more chapters available, support the author, support genuine reading!)
