Chapter 2488: A Shot at Victory
Zu An took a look at the Peacock Princess. If not for her young age, she would have looked as if she was carved from the same mold as Kong Nanwu.
The Saintess asked with a peculiar voice, “You couldn’t have stolen her heart within such a short time, could you?”
Zu An rolled his eyes. She’s still in the mood to joke even at a time like this.
More people who hadn’t made a move earlier stepped forward to mediate as well. The Saintess heaved a sigh, wiped away the Peacock Princess’ tears, and said, “Little sister Qingwu, I’ll stay.”
The Peacock Princess’ face lit up in joy, though there was still a shadow on her face when she thought about Zu An and the Saintess’ relationship.
After this farce, everyone’s complexions looked terrible.
Soon, some members of the Fiend races’ upper echelons came out to scatter the crowd before respectfully inviting the Saintess and Zu An to their conference room for a discussion. This was an implicit acknowledgment of their relationship.
The Saintess led Zu An to the conference hall. She was still angry due to the earlier incident, so she dragged Zu An in and settled him down beside her. The Fiend races’ upper echelons exchanged looks, but in the end, they could only accept it with bitter smiles.
A youth from the Tiger race stepped forward and bowed to Zu An. “I apologize for the misunderstandings we had. From the looks of it, you indeed defeated the Incestuous King and his army. We were ignorant.”
The other race leaders also stepped forward to apologize.
Their courtesy convinced Zu An to let the matter go. “We're all here to deal with the monsters. Given the high stakes involved, it’s important to be prudent.”
The Tiger youth laughed. “Thank you for your magnanimity.”
That significantly alleviated the tension in the air.
Soon, the topic turned to the Ocean races. The Saintess turned to Zu An and asked, “Based on the intelligence we received, you were the one who convinced the Ocean races to abandon the monsters and ally with us, right?”
“The monsters harbor malicious intent, and there's no lack of wise people among the Ocean races. They understand the importance of huddling in the face of winter,” Zu An replied with a smile. “The Ocean races are currently dealing with a poisoning incident. Once they're ready, they should send an envoy over for further talks about an alliance.”

“I heard the poison was widespread,” the Saintess said.
Worry painted the other faces in the room. They would have less manpower to oppose the monsters if their future ally suffered a heavy loss here.
“Rest assured, big brother has found the antidote, and the Mermaid Queen has transported it back to the Ocean races. They will overcome this crisis.” The Peacock Princess thought about the time they'd spent in search of the antidote, and a smile formed on her lips.
The others cheered in delight as they looked at Zu An with gratitude.
The Saintess shot a contemplative look at the Peacock Princess. Her face lights up whenever she talks about big brother Zu. She's already fallen for him. Haa, it would be hard for a young lady like her to resist big brother Zu’s charms. It had been the same for her too. Thinking about the past made her feel wistful.
The Third Prince spoke up. “Still, the Ocean races suffered a huge blow. It will take some time before they regain their fighting prowess. Our circumstances still aren’t optimistic.”
The Peacock Princess pointed out, “Big brother recently severely injured the Incestuous King and decimated a monster army.”
The Saintess narrowed her eyes at the mention of the Incestuous King. She had met Mojard in the future, after all.
The Third Prince calmly explained, “Mojard is the third most powerful person in the Monster World, but the one calling the shots is the second-in-command, the Monster Lord. Mojard and the Monster Lord have been on bad terms, and there is significant infighting between the two of them. Their rivalrous relationship has benefited us over the years, securing us some victories.”
The crowd looked to be in low spirits. The Fiend races were usually proud of themselves, but years of war with the monsters had shattered their pride. They had to admit that the victories they'd scored weren't clean, and they understood what the Third Prince was driving at.
The fall of the Incestuous King only made the monsters a greater threat, as the Monster Lord could now devote his effort to dealing with them. The crowd even felt angry at Zu An for shattering the fragile balance, causing their circumstances to worsen.
The Saintess could tell that the Third Prince was trying to lead the crowd on, and her face turned cold. “Third Prince, I disagree with your statements. Big brother Zu has eliminated an elite monster army. As numerous as the monsters are, this is still a huge blow to them. Also, you only see the cons but not the pros behind this matter.”
“If I may ask, Saintess, what benefits are there to this?” the Third Prince sneered.
This woman has let her emotions get to her head. It’ll damage her reputation if she can’t justify herself here. This is a good opportunity for me to regain the authority the imperial family has lost and become the new Fiend Emperor.
Due to his respect for the Saintess, he had never harbored such thoughts before today, but seeing the goddess he revered hugging another man with a flushed face had angered and hurt him deeply.
Since the Saintess doesn’t know what it means to have self-respect, I shall take her place then!
He'd liked the Saintess because of the latter’s inviolable halo, but now that she had become another man’s spoil of war, his interest waned. He wasn’t interested in getting together with someone else’s wife. In fact, he was extremely hygienic about that. He only liked the purest woman in the world.
Zu An sent a telepathic message to the Saintess with a frown. “Little sister Ling’er, that fellow harbors bad intentions. Shall I just get rid of him?”
The Saintess shook her head and replied telepathically, “The Third Prince represents the imperial family. If you make a move against him, the harmony within the Fiend races will collapse. At a time like this, the Fiend races can’t afford such a loss. Don’t worry, big brother Zu. I know what I’m doing.”
She cleared her throat and addressed the race leaders. “The Monster Lord has always been ambitious. He dared not run rampant due to the Incestuous King keeping him in check, but now that the Incestuous King has fallen, those shackles have loosened. What do you think his next move would be?”
Zu An smiled. He could guess where she was driving at. It hasn’t been long since we parted ways, but little sister Ling’er has grown a lot.
“Of course it’s to rally his army to eradicate...” The Third Prince suddenly froze halfway through his words as a thought surfaced in his mind.
Some of the smarter ones in the conference hall also fell into contemplation.
The Saintess slowly added, “Think about it. The monsters have occupied our most prosperous lands. Would they still be interested in these barren lands? To the Monster Lord, even though we have launched a couple of successful retaliatory attacks, the war is already over. We can’t turn the tables around anymore. He can destroy us whenever he wants. But there is a much more pressing problem than us.”
“What is it?” someone anxiously asked.
“The Lord of Slaughter!” the Saintess slowly enunciated a name.
As they remembered the horrors associated with that name, the conference hall fell silent.
The Saintess finally continued, “While the Lord of Slaughter was away, the Monster Lord moved to seize authority within the monster ranks. The one who can curb him, the Incestuous King, is out of the picture. The only obstacle left in his way of becoming the true Monster Lord is the Lord of Slaughter.”
