^Is it just me or does it feel like Boss Kidanna should've been back by now?^

^It's not just you, but given that we're inside of a wandering ruin, there's no telling why she's still not here yet.^

^Hmmm.^

When Kidanna first entered the underground throne room, she had ordered the rest of her men to head back to the exit with all of the loot that they had managed to accrue up to that point, while leaving only a few to keep guard over the entrance.

Despite some initial protests, the Goldenbacks eventually decided to have faith in their leader, as she hadn't steered them wrong before.

But now, after waiting for what felt like hours at this point, the Goldenbacks were torn.

Had their leader fallen victim to some unknown danger in that hidden chamber?

Had she fallen victim to the machinations of those damned Silver-tongue assholes?

Or did she take a nap somewhere and forget to inform the others that she had decided to do so?

Either way, the Goldenback warriors were starting to get worried about the status of the leader and were just about to send people to go and check on her.

As luck would have it though, other people were about to arrive and tell them all that they needed to know about the current situation.

^Alright, that's it; we have to go and check on the boss,^ an elderly member of the Goldenbacks proclaimed for all to hear. ^Who amongst us is the fastest aga—^

^Wait a minute, look! Coming from the jungle! Isn't that the boss's adoptive sister?^

^Which one?^

^The one with the freckles and sun kissed skin.^

^In that case, it is !^

From the jungle brush, Alicia and Harriet came running out while looking like they had just spent the past hour or so doing nothing but that.

Once the duo of girls saw the Golden Gorilla Union warriors, though, they began to slow down and let out massive sighs of relief and exhaustion.

^Oh, thank the gods, you guys are still here!^ Alicia managed to say first as her stamina was significantly better in comparison to Harriet's. ^We need your help, because big sis is in trouble!^

^What kind of trouble?^

^The kind where she's in a death match with Alfonzo!^

^OH FUCK!^

With their worse fears now realized, the Goldenbacks immediately scrambled into action.

^All warriors present, get ready to move! We gotta get to the boss's side, now!^

While this was happening, Alicia and Harriet shared a subtle look before communicating in secret via their aether.

...

"Looks everything is going according to plan. All we need to do now is have the kaijin pull out the zakos in time for the Goldenbacks to take over," Alicia transmitted to Harriet.

"I do as vell, but...I'm still confused,"Harriet transmitted back. "Why isn't Zhen Liu just ordering the kaijin and zako to wipe out the Silver-tonguez in one fell swoop? Wouldn't that be more efficient? Wouldn't the Golden Gorilla Union be more than grateful that someone defeated their arch rivals for them?"

"It would be more efficient yes," Alicia admitted. "But to take a page from Zhen Liu's books, he believes it would be better in the long term if the Golden Gorilla Union took care of their own enemy. And honestly, I'm in agreement."

"Really? Why?"

"Because I actually knew Alfonzo when I was younger as well. Back when he was known as Big Brother Alfonzo."

"Oh! Oh...what happened?"

"Well..."

____________Flashback time...____________

In the early days of Amber Shore, Kongara Dodorado was one of the first people to settle the town.

Originating from a small merchant family, Kongara spent his early days working as a mercenary to make ends meet and slowly progress as an Aether warrior, with the end goal of becoming a Grandmaster at most.

At that level of power, it is as enough to be t treated with respect without catching the ire of larger powers.

However, that humble goal was soon replaced with loftier ambitions when two events occurred in short order of each other.

First, Kongara stumbled upon an aether formula that was significantly stronger than his old one and one that he had perfect affinity for no less.

This formula was known as the [Jungle Monarch: Great Ape's Wisdom], and with it, he managed to reach the stage of Grandmaster in a matter of months as opposed to decades.

Second, and more importantly, he got married.

During a particularly dangerous hunt, Kongara ended up rescuing the daughter of an old money family that was visiting the area and tied the knot with her shortly after.

Due to the need to want to leave a proper inheritance for his children and wanting to make sure his wife had a comfortable life, Kongara decided that his new goal wasn't to be just an Aether Grandmaster anymore but to establish a foundation in which his children and his children's children could live in comfort.

Several decades worth of effort, and the birth of his daughter, Kidanna, later, Kongara had managed to establish the Golden Gorilla Union, a grassroots organization of warriors, merchants, and workers that catered to all the shipping and handling needs of Amber Shore.

However, it was during this time that Kongara made a rather unpredictable mistake: he groomed a successor earlier than he should've.

During this period of growth and prosperity, Kongara adopted a talented Bloodliner orphan by the name of Alfonzo.

Alfonzo was taught the ins and outs of running the Golden Gorilla Union, to the point that he was practically able to run the company whenever Kongara was absent.

As such, many people, including several of the lead figures in the Golden Gorilla Union, assumed that Alfonzo would become the leader once Kongara decided to step down and pursue cultivation in isolation.

But alas, fate had other plans in mind.

When Kidanna started cultivating, she was found to be perfectly compatible with the same formula as Kongara and was rapidly progressing in her cultivation, to the point where she was just as strong as some of the leaders at a much younger age.

In other words, she was shaping up to be an even greater successor candidate than Alfonzo.

Needless to say, such a development led to some...friction.

While Kongara still treated Alfonzo as his son and Kidanna still treated him as her older brother, people couldn't help but to notice that Alfonzo himself started acting a bit colder towards them both.

And then the fateful day came when Kongara suddenly died during a hunt for a Goldenback Gorilla.

On this day, he and Alfonzo left to acquire a beast spirit for Kidanna since she has reached the stage of her cultivation that required such an important component.

It should've been a very routine procedure, but a freak accident occurred, and only Alfonzo was able to return alive in a heavily injured state with the Goldenback's spirit in tow.

Unfortunately, he wasn't able to recover Kongara's body due to the Goldenback having swallowed him whole moments before he was sent tumbling over a cliff to his death.

At least, this was the official record.

It wasn't until several years later, after Alfonzo had betrayed them all and established the Silver Jungle Shipping Company, that Kidanna and several of the union heads found something...odd.

During the fourth year or so after his death, a caravan from the Golden Gorilla Union had passed through the area where that fated battle took place.

The warriors present at the scene figured that now would be an excellent time to recover the body. After all, they were accompanied by a warrior whose specialty was death aether, and the Goldenback's body had probably decayed enough by this time for them to check the insides for their former leader's bones.

When they explored the area, though, they found evidence that the official record was anything but accurate.

They managed to locate the Goldenback's corpse and confirmed that it had died from a great impact, but...they couldn't find Kongara's body inside of the Goldenback's stomach.

Instead, they had discovered his body several feet away from the Goldenback's corpse in a shallow grave.

And not only that, but they had determined that the cause of death wasn't because of battling the Goldenback Gorilla, as there would be more evidence of blunt force trauma or teeth marks.

Instead, they had found that the body's injuries were more aligned with the usage of claws, poison, and sharpened instruments.

In other words, Kongara's body showed evidence that Alfonzo had betrayed him, killed him, and then left his body to rot in the jungle.

Unfortunately, the Golden Gorilla Union could only speculate without hard evidence.

But that didn't stop them from reporting the news to Kidanna.

"...at least, that's what I remember being told," Alicia told Harriet. "This was a year or so back, so I might be forgetting some of the details. Hell, I think I got the name of that formula wrong."

"Huh...so does Zhen Liu make it a habit to facilitate these revenge fulfillment scenarios or..."

"Honestly, we have been speculating about this for a while."
