Stone Claw City had survived the Beast Tide.

Not only did they survive, but they managed to slay the main leader of the Beast Tide and at minimal casualties at that.

This was a moment of survival, celebration and victory.

From the back alleys to the main plazas, practically everyone living in Stone Claw City, whether they were old, young, rich, poor or anything in-between, they were celebrating having survived this once-in-a-lifetime crisis by throwing a massive party.

Feelings of joy and relief filled the hearts of everyone.

At least, that was the case for a majority of the citizenry.

In contrast to this revelry, the mood at the Zhen Clan estate was decidedly more...somber. More specifically, the inner members of the Zhen Clan were in the middle of a discussion that was away from the limelight. After all, plans about recovering an incredibly talented scion that had gone missing due to a freak accident was a bit of a mood killer.

...

"So as far as we can tell, Zhen Liu was sent immediately flying southwards from our current location. Meaning that he’s anywhere between the Desert of Crimson Hate or...the southernmost tip of the Dozing Salamander continent," Zhen Long debriefed his brothers and father.

"Er...shouldn’t we also include the possibility of him being dead," Zhen Hou mentioned, despite being seated right next to Zhen Yan, Zhen Liu’s father.

Zhen Yan directed a flat stare at his second brother before bringing up a very pertinent fact.

"Remember the last time we thought he was dead?"

"Fair point..."

In the inner halls of the Zhen Clan estate, the Zhen Clan Patriarch and his sons were seated at the large conference table they used for matters of grave importance.

Last time it was for planning the preparations of the Beast Tide, the times before was when they were dealing with the main clan in various ways and now this time it was more...personal.

More specifically, they were discussing what happened to one of their scions and where exactly they ended up.

They had figured out the former after seeing the state of the teleporation array, and were in the process of repairing it thanks to assistance from the Zhen Clan matriarch and the Hermit Zhong Wei.

As for the latter, they were kind of stumped.

None of the Zhen Clan elders were experts when it came to teleporations arrays, and not even the guest hermit could figure out where Zhen Liu could’ve been sent to.

Teleporation accidents were one in a million events, and any records on them had the victims end up anywhere from five feet away from their intended destination to ten thousand miles away.

Below the ground.

In other words, they were trying to find a needle in the haystack and they didn’t even know where the haystack was.

And to make matters worse, they couldn’t exactly expend the manpower to comb the entire search area they had determined.

The damage of the Beast Tide may have been limited, but it was still extensive enough that resources had to be sunk in to repair and provide compensation for the lives lost.

Not only that, but opportunistic shit kickers had used this disaster as a means to establish little strongholds and fiefs in the ruined villages and towns near Stone Claw City. Meaning, even if they did want to find Zhen Liu, they didn’t have enough resources.

In other words, unless they had access to new information that could help them lessen the search area or gain a sudden influx in resources, there was nothing they could do.

"If we send too many people, it will leave us vulnerable to attack. If we don’t send enough people though, Zhen Liu could very well wind up dead or worse," Zhen Lao summed up the situation after a moment of looking over the information they had one more time. "We are stuck between a rock and a hard place, aren’t we?"

"Well...as absurd as it sounds," Zhen Ye began to say. "Our only hope right now is to bank on another miracle. Either he comes back on his own again, or we get a sudden influx of information that can help us to expedite -"

BAM!

"Darling?"

"I know where my son disappeared to," Daria Nerissa-Zhen declared after kicking open the door to the conference room.

On the one hand, the Zhen Clan elders were shocked and mildly offended by Daria’s aggressive behavior...on the other, they remembered what happened last time and that it took the patriarch to physically hold her back before she decided to beat someone over their comments in regards to her son.

As such, the elders and patriarch collectively decided to allow Daria to say her piece. Especially since it sounded to be good news.

Of course, they still had their own questions.

"That’s an incredibly bold statement to make. How did you manage to get this information?," Zhen Long asked.

"I heard it from them."

"Who?"

"Them."

After enigmatically repeating herself, Daria stepped away from the door to allow the entry of a group of odd looking warriors that were actually quite familiar to the Zhen Clan.

"Wait a minute, what?"

That’s because the warriors in question were actually Zhen Liu’s puppets.

Shortly after Daria opened the way and stepped to the side, Nepherage, Frosttusk and Hurricroak entered the room. Bundled in Nepherage’s arms was a large rolled map.

The kaijin and Zhen Clan elders stared at each other in silence for a couple of moments, with the latter somewhat confused.

That is, until Nepherage opened her mouth.

"So...to mimic our lord’s methodology in explaining topics to people that they can’t seem to wrap their head around," Nepherage said in a voice that was as smooth as polished jade, much to the shock of the Zhen Clan elders. "We will be fielding questions for exactly two minutes until we can get to the actual meat of this matter. Who wants to go first?"

The moment Nepherage opened her mouth and asked her question, all of the Zhen Clan elders, save Patriarch Zhen Shi, had shocked expressions on their face.

Evidently, their memories on being possessed may have been slightly scrambled, otherwise, they would’ve remembered that voice and not be shocked by the fact that Nepherage, who they assumed was Zhen Liu’s custom aether puppet all this time, was actually capable of speech.

It took them a few moments, but they eventually recovered fast enough to ask the key questions that had formed in their heads.

...

"So...you guys aren’t aether puppets?"

"No, we’re what are known as Kaijin. There’s a whole explanation behind this, but we have don’t have time nor authority to answer that without our creator present," Nepeherage explained.

"So Zhen Liu created you all?"

"Yes, and in turn, we help him to cultivate in a literal sense."

"Huh."

...

"Why didn’t Zhen Liu tell any of us about the fact that he could create...you guys?"

"Because, to quote the maestro, ’The size of the target on my ass and on my family’s ass would be bigger than an elephant if people knew I could create monstrous super warriors at the drop of a hat" Hurricroak answered.

"That...makes a lot of sense actually."

...

"Wait, if he had all this power at his fingertips, why didn’t he...ya know..."

"Because minn jarl believed such petty things like internal family feuds are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things," Frosttusk answered. "That said, he is also a firm believer of eye for an eye."

"That’s....surprisingly magnanimous but also terrifying. Fair enough."

...

"Why aren’t you guys calling Xiao Liu by his name?"

"Why do you call the patriarch, father?"*3

"That tracks."

...

Eventually, after answering all of these questions, Nepeherage was given the opportunity to unfurl the map she had brought with them and explained to the elders where their missing scion had ended up.

The map in question depicted the isthmus connecting Stampeding Bison to Dozing Salamander, and had a location with a circle drawn around it.

"Our lord has ended up in a small jungle frontier town called Papaya Town. He hasn’t gotten in too much trouble yet, but we’re afraid that might change the longer we’re not by his side," Nepeherage explained while tapping the map. "We have the location, we have the muscle, we just need the clan’s assistance."

"In what way?"

"Reputation, mortal diplomacy and general commerce that we can’t do for...obvious reasons," Nepeherage answered while gesturing to heraelf and her companions.

Nepeherage wasn’t exactly wrong with her assessment, due to the fact that they looked incredibly colorful and strange even by cultivation standards.

That said, there was one more question in regards to this rescue mission.

"The way you’re phrasing those needs suggest that you want us to send people to accompany you," Zhen Jin pointed out. "Did you want us to come to a decision or..."

"We have some people in mind, who would probably benefit the most out of this trip."
