Chapter 788: Chapter 787 More and More Monsters

Moreover, it wasn’t just a matter of slowness, the mountain road was so steep, and Xuanzang had almost never walked on the ground before. Now, as he was forced to walk, he found it unbearable. He had barely gone a distance before Xuanzang felt a sharp pain in the soles of his feet, as if each step was like stepping on the edge of a knife.

He had been able to persist for a while, but after walking for some time, Xuanzang stopped.

"Master, what’s wrong?" Though the Six-Eared Macaque moved slowly, being a monkey, it still moved much faster than Xuanzang.

Chen Nuo’s pace was also moderate, but it was somewhat faster compared to Xuanzang’s.

Xuanzang didn’t want to be left behind, so he tried his best to keep up with the other two. But alas, since he rarely walked, his feet hurt so much after just a short distance that he couldn’t walk at all.

Six Ears was also worried that monsters would come, so he didn’t have time to take care of his master. It wasn’t until he stopped that he noticed something was wrong with Xuanzang.

"Can Wukong get the white horse back? My feet hurt so much, I can’t walk."

Six Ears hadn’t expected to encounter a monster on the way, nor did he expect Chen Nuo’s sudden cough to draw the monster’s attention, so he was completely unprepared for the event.

It was indeed unexpected for the white horse to run away, but it would also be difficult to find it again now.

"Master, I’m sorry I let the white horse run away. How about this, you hold on for a little longer. Once we get down the mountain, I’ll go to town and buy you another horse," said the Six-Eared Macaque, trying to soothe his now somewhat angry master.

Usually, Xuanzang would certainly forgive the Six-Eared Macaque, but at the moment, his feet hurt unbearably, and there was still a long way to go, so he felt angry momentarily.

"When you let the white horse run away, why didn’t you think to make a mark on its body? We still have such a long way to go on this mountain road, and you expect me to walk with my feet, how can I go such a long distance?" Xuanzang’s anger surged at the thought of the long mountain road ahead, and the fear that monsters might jump out at any time, his eyes reddened with urgency.

"Master, don’t be sad. Why don’t I carry you on my back?" Seeing that Xuanzang was about to cry, the Six-Eared Macaque quickly suggested.

Despite speaking to Xuanzang in a calm and polite manner, Six Ears was very angry inside: angry at Chen Nuo for coughing and attracting the monster, and frustrated with Xuanzang’s weakness, who barely walked a distance and was already on the verge of tears.

But even though he was irritated, he couldn’t abandon Xuanzang. After all, the journey to achieving Buddhahood still depended on him.

Xuanzang had considered allowing Six Ears to carry him, but with Six Ears being less than four feet tall, he feared that asking him to do so might just break Six Ears’ back before they had taken a few steps.

"Master, don’t hesitate anymore, just come on up quickly. If the monsters catch up, neither of us will be able to run," urged the Six-Eared Macaque, waiting for Xuanzang to climb on. After a long wait and seeing Xuanzang not moving, he urged him again.

"Wukong, with your size, how could you possibly carry me?" Xuanzang looked at the fuzzy back and struggled internally, but ultimately, he didn’t climb on.

"Master, don’t be fooled by my small stature; my strength is great. I can carry a whole mountain," the Six-Eared Macaque said. "You better hurry up. We are already moving slow enough. If you waste any more time here, I’m afraid we won’t make it off the mountain before dark."

Xuanzang wasn’t planning on getting on at first, but upon hearing Six Ears speak such reasonable words, he finally climbed onto Six Ears’ back.

And indeed, Six Ears had not lied; although he was not tall, his strength was great, and Xuanzang felt even more stable on his back than when he was riding the white horse.

The Six-Eared Macaque carried Xuanzang and moved forward, with Chen Nuo following behind. The two of them had indeed wasted a lot of time, and in just a short while, Chen Nuo had already scouted out that there were at least ten monsters patrolling the mountain.

The Six-Eared Macaque had good hearing; he also noticed that the sounds on the mountain had become different than before and had grown much noisier.

Seeing that the Six-Eared Macaque had stopped in his tracks, Xuanzang, puzzled, asked, "What’s the matter, Wukong? Why aren’t we moving? Have we encountered some trouble?"

"Master, don’t speak. I think I hear someone coming this way," the Six-Eared Macaque told Xuanzang.

Who could be out here in these desolate mountains? Could it be that the white horse that had run off was making its way back?

At this point, Xuanzang still didn’t know what was happening and was simply delighted at the mention of someone approaching.

"Could it be our white horse that ran off has returned?"

"Don’t talk," the Six-Eared Macaque said again.

Looking at the serious expression on the Six-Eared Macaque’s face, Xuanzang also began to sense that something was awry.

However, since the Six-Eared Macaque had just told him to be silent, he didn’t know when he would be able to speak, so he shut his mouth and waited.

After what felt like the time it would take for two sticks of incense to burn, the expression on the Six-Eared Macaque’s face grew even more grave. Xuanzang wanted to ask Chen Nuo what was happening but, turning his head and seeing Chen Nuo wearing the same expression as the Six-Eared Macaque, he suddenly felt fear as well. Could it be that a demon was approaching? Why else would both of their expressions be so grave?

The expression on Chen Nuo’s face was feigned.

Indeed, demons were coming. However, his mood differed from that of the Six-Eared Macaque; while the Six-Eared Macaque worried about the demons arriving to capture Xuanzang, Chen Nuo was worried that they might fail to capture him.

The number of demons also continued to increase, from ten to twenty, and the trend showed signs of further increase.

It seemed that the two lesser demons who had previously fled had gone back and informed two greater demons. They had learned that someone had trespassed on their territory and wanted to see if it was the person they had been waiting for from Tang He, which was why they summoned so many demons to patrol the mountains.

But even if they did so, it was quite imposing indeed—exactly what Chen Nuo had hoped for.

Now, Xuanzang was extremely frightened. Although he didn’t know what was happening outside, the serious expressions on both the Six-Eared Macaque’s and Chen Nuo’s faces alerted him to the gravity of the situation he was facing.

After what seemed like half the time required for a stick of incense to burn, the Six-Eared Macaque, carrying Xuanzang, began to retreat.

"Whats wrong, Wukong? Have we really encountered demons?" Xuanzang asked, "Could it be that those two demons who came earlier have gone back to alert the others? But they clearly didn’t see us."

"They indeed didn’t see us just now, but that doesn’t mean they can’t guess. Most likely, they’ve called such a large number of demons because they’ve guessed our identities," the Six-Eared Macaque explained to Xuanzang.

"Mobilizing such a force?" Xuanzang picked up on the key point, "Are there many demons coming for us?"

The Six-Eared Macaque didn’t want to reveal the truth to Xuanzang because he knew his master was already very scared. If he were to learn that the entire mountain was swarming with demons hunting them, his fear would only deepen.

"There are indeed many demons, but don’t worry, master. I will surely shake them off," the Six-Eared Macaque reassured Xuanzang, turning back to look at him.

But Xuanzang didn’t feel comforted, for he, too, could hear the shouting voices of the group of demons.
