Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 715 - 714 Counter Scheme
What exactly is going on with Sun Wukong, always mentioning demons as if he had a score to settle—could it be to provoke him, or had he actually offended Sun Wukong?
He carefully recalled his conversation with Sun Wukong at Chaos Residence, but still couldn’t remember how he could have possibly offended Sun Wukong, to have him find his cave abode so quickly and repeatedly call him a demon.
"Wukong, did you follow me back here?" Xiong Daoren asked, "I remember, I never told you where I was."
The Six-Eared Macaque had always found it strange how this demon treated him with such familiarity, as if they really knew each other. Now, hearing him say this, he understood.
The Wukong this demon spoke of was not him, but another Sun Wukong.
Since that was the case, why not just play along with the plan and pretend to be that Sun Wukong, then trick him into giving back the Kasaya?
After all, the Kasaya was taken by them, so doing this wouldn’t count as deceiving.
Thinking this, the Six-Eared Macaque said to Xiong Daoren: "Yes, I followed you here. Is the precious Kasaya with you?"
Xiong Daoren found ’Sun Wukong’s’ question a bit strange—as if he knew the answer, yet seemed to be fishing for information.
"That’s not with me, of course; didn’t I just tell you? I’m holding a Buddhist Robe Assembly in three days. You can’t have forgotten so soon."
"I haven’t forgotten; how could I!" The Six-Eared Macaque laughed, already sure in his mind.
It seemed that the Kasaya was indeed taken by this Black Bear Demon, "The Kasaya was originally kept at Guanyin Temple, wasn’t it? How did you take it away from there?"
When Xiong Daoren heard ’Sun Wukong’ ask this, he was startled. He thought hard about the conversation he had with Sun Wukong at Chaos Residence and realized he had indeed not mentioned where he had taken the Kasaya from. How could he know?
"Ah Wukong, how did you know the Kasaya was originally at Guanyin Temple?"
"Who am I, to not know of such things?" The Six-Eared Macaque chuckled, "There’s much more that I know. But first, tell me, did you kill the Jinchi Elder and then take it away?"
Xiong Daoren quickly waved his hands, "Wukong, what are you talking about? I never take lives."
"Haven’t I been telling you all along? I aim to become an immortal; how could I possibly kill? Besides, the Jinchi Elder and I were somewhat friends; why would I kill him?"
The Six-Eared Macaque squinted his eyes at Xiong Daoren, persisting, "Tell me the truth, did you really not kill him?"
"No, really, I didn’t!" Xiong Daoren denied, "He’s dead? How did he die?"
"He died suddenly." The Six-Eared Macaque said, "Such deaths usually follow extreme psychological turmoil, we found—cough—in any case, he’s dead."
The more he spoke, the more likely he was to slip up; almost revealing too much, the Six-Eared Macaque fell silent.
"Wukong, just a moment ago, you were cooking, and now you know so much about Guanyin Temple’s affairs—things I don’t even know, and you claim to be aware of everything?" Xiong Daoren looked at the ’Sun Wukong’ across from him, feeling that something was amiss.
But looking at the person opposite, who clearly bore the appearance of Sun Wukong, even though Xiong Daoren hadn’t yet achieved enlightenment, his eyesight had always been keen. He could tell whether it was pretense or not.
"I, well, I have my own ways of finding out," the Six-Eared Macaque lied, "Besides, having spent so much time in the Heavenly Realm, I definitely have some connections. With just a little inquiry, I found out about the happenings at Guanyin Temple."
Xiong Daoren nodded. What ’Sun Wukong’ said wasn’t wrong—his connections in the Heavenly Realm had always been robust, and he could easily find out anything he wanted with just a bit of probing. Yet, there was something Daoren didn’t understand, "Brother Wukong, why are you asking about this?"
"I naturally want to know the origins of your precious Kasaya," the Six-Eared Macaque said with a smile, "You cherish it so much, I must find out where it comes from."
"Didn’t we agree before that I would show it to you during the Buddhist Robe Assembly?" Xiong Daoren asked.
It was truly strange. Sun Wukong had never done anything like this before, reneging on a promise so suddenly—and for a Kasaya, no less, digging into the matter with such detail. Could this really be something Sun Wukong would do?
"Oh, I just couldn’t resist my curiosity and wanted to come see it beforehand," said the Six-Eared Macaque. Then, tilting his chin up at Xiong Daoren, he asked, "You’re not serious, right? Just for one precious Kasaya, hidden so deeply away—you won’t even let me have a look?"
"But we clearly agreed you’d come back in three days, so why the rush?"
Xiong Daoren felt slightly aggrieved—not that he wouldn’t show it to Sun Wukong, but the fact that he had reneged on their arrangement, and in such a short amount of time, had even asked around in the Heavenly Realm to learn about the precious Kasaya, was simply abnormal.
It suddenly struck Xiong Daoren that something was amiss; he hadn’t told Sun Wukong about his residence in the mortal world, so for Sun Wukong to know his whereabouts, he must have been following him ever since he left.
From his arrival at the abode to when Sun Wukong came to see him, it had only been the time for a cup of tea.
For Sun Wukong to find out in such a brief amount of time where Daoren had obtained his Kasaya, as well as what had transpired at Guanyin Temple, seemed nearly impossible.
Moreover, he claimed to have learned the ins and outs of the matter through a divine official in the Heavenly Realm. Given that this Zen monastery is Guanyin Temple, and considering the short span of time, the only one who could possibly know all of that would be Bodhisattva Guanyin himself—there was no way he could be informed about this.
Yet, this ’Sun Wukong’s’ appearance didn’t seem to be a disguise, Xiong Daoren looked at the person opposite him, what on earth was going on?
"I’m just too curious, you know? You talked about your treasure Kasaya and how magnificent it is—I’m dying of curiosity. But to wait, you’re asking me to wait for three full days? How could I possibly do that?" the Six-Eared Macaque said.
"Well, since it’s come to this, could you at least throw in a few extra dishes?" Xiong Daoren asked.
The Six-Eared Macaque, sensing the probing nature of his question, pondered Sun Wukong’s character, and then replied, "Impossible. Don’t even think about such a thing."
Unexpectedly, the response was quite in keeping with Sun Wukong’s character. Daoren thought for a moment and then said, "But Brother Wukong, I paid you so much in Spirit Stones. It’s one thing not to give me extra dishes, but to go back on your word like this is just too much!"
"I refuse. If you don’t give me dishes, I won’t let you see the treasure."
The statement contained a multitude of information. Six Ears answered, "No, forget about getting extra dishes. But let me first have a look at your treasured Kasaya. If it indeed turns out to be something exceptional, I might be in such a good mood that I’ll actually give you some dishes."
At this moment, Xiong Daoren was certain—the person before him was definitely not Sun Wukong.
When he left, he hadn’t given Sun Wukong any Spirit Stones. But who was this person then, masquerading as Sun Wukong, his appearance flawless without any discrepancy? How had he managed to do it?
