Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 681 - 680: Master and Disciple Quarrel
Because of that mortal’s provocative words, the Six-Eared Macaque suddenly changed his strategy. He now intended to thoroughly infuriate the mortal and then make him angrily leave.
"Is that so? You keep saying you want to help us, but I really haven’t felt at all like you’re helping. Yesterday you said you were scared. We could’ve gone to another village, yet we stayed here instead," the Six-Eared Macaque said to Chen Nuo, "Isn’t that right?"
Chen Nuo, knowing he was at fault, didn’t speak.
"Look, you’re not saying anything, which means you indeed know you did something wrong. And it’s not just this one thing—there’s also you having nightmares at night. Wasn’t it my master who got up to recite the Scripture of Quietude for you so you could fall asleep?"
Seeing Chen Nuo remain silent, the Six-Eared Macaque knew his words had hit the mark.
"I may be a little cowardly, but you’re no better. You say you’re escorting your master on horseback, just leading the horse and walking slowly. How long will it take you?" Chen Nuo retorted.
"Besides, I’m not a man of leisure. There’s a lot to do in the military camp, and here I am, following you for dozens of miles a day. I really don’t know when we’ll get there. Have you heard me complain?"
"Then, Great General, please leave now," the Six-Eared Macaque said. "After all, we’ll be able to make it on our own. You mentioned you have many matters to attend to in the camp, so go and deal with them quickly."
Xuanzang felt torn between the earnest Great General and the disciple he had only recently taken in.
Afters trying to persuade one and then the other, in the end, neither of them listened to him; both just kept talking about themselves.
Chen Nuo seemed extremely angry. Hearing what the Six-Eared Macaque had said, he stopped the horse he was leading, "So, you’re telling me to leave, aren’t you?"
"No, no, Great General, please don’t be angry. Wukong, quickly apologize to the Great General," Xuanzang said to the Six-Eared Macaque.
The Six-Eared Macaque’s scheme was about to succeed; he had no intention of listening.
"Yes, I do want you to leave right now. Having you here is no good anyway, it’s all about walking, and I can escort my master myself without having to worry about your temper," he snapped.
"Alright, alright, very well," Chen Nuo said, repeating the word thrice.
Then he turned not to look at the devious macaque but directed his gaze at Xuanzang, "Master, I had good intentions of protecting you on your journey. But since I’m apparently a nuisance to you both, then I’ll leave. However, I must say, I don’t think your disciple is truly fit for Buddhism."
"You say I’m not fit for Buddhism?" The Six-Eared Macaque, who had just been gloating over having finally driven the man away, was taken aback by such words, "What do you mean by that? You think you’re fit, and I’m not?"
"Whether I’m fit or not is not for you to decide. Of course, I have no intention of joining Buddhism either, so don’t you worry about that," Chen Nuo said with a laugh as he waved his hand and rode away on his horse.
"I think even if you wanted to join Buddhism, you wouldn’t be worthy!" the Six-Eared Macaque shouted bitterly after Chen Nuo’s retreating figure. The revered state he longed for seemed worthless in the eyes of others, which made him exceedingly angry.
But the mortal was already far away on horseback. No matter what the Six-Eared Macaque shouted now, it was useless; it was like punching into cotton, utterly ineffective.
After the mortal General had gone a good distance. Xuanzang said to the Six-Eared Macaque with a heavy expression, "You disastrous disciple! Kneel down."
The Six-Eared Macaque was still seething with rage, and he had only known Xuanzang for a few days besides. If it weren’t for Bodhisattva Guanyin telling him he needed to protect the monk on his journey to the Western Heaven for Scriptures, he wouldn’t have bothered at all.
That mortal had insulted him, and not only did he not defend himself, but now he was also expected to admit he was wrong? That was simply out of the question.
"Why should I kneel?" the Six-Eared Macaque countered.
"If you don’t even know your own fault, then you should be all the more ready to kneel!" Xuanzang was truly angry this time. He had originally thought that his disciple was docile, but he hadn’t expected him to be so disobedient, using such indifferent language to evaluate someone who had been eager to help them.
"I’m not wrong, I won’t kneel." Six-Eared Macaque stubbornly refused what Xuanzang had told him.
"Will you kneel or not?" Xuanzang asked again with a heavy tone.
"I already tried to stop you when you were starting to argue, why did you still quarrel, and show no manners at all to the Great General who was so eager to help us?"
"I lack manners?" Six-Eared Macaque was almost laughed by the accusation.
"Why doesn’t the Master see whether he has manners or not? You know very well that yesterday he caused us to fall behind, and moreover, when he had nightmares at night, Master, you spent your own time reciting the Scripture of Quietude for that mortal, and you didn’t even rest well yourself. Shouldn’t I criticize him?"
"You shouldn’t."
Xuanzang looked at his disciple who showed no signs of remorse, feeling a surge of anger that his disciple was so unruly, even after he had promised to behave when Xuanzang first accepted him as a student.
As a result, now encountering a bit of trouble, he left all the promises he had made to his Master when he became a disciple far behind.
There was no point in arguing about who was at fault, this matter should never have occurred, and they were dealing with mortals on top of that, creating conflict was even more inappropriate. Instead, they not only conflicted with them but even drove them away. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
The more Xuanzang thought about it, the angrier he became. He said, "You go, go call the Great General back, and tell him this matter was our fault."
"I won’t go, I’m not wrong, it’s for the best that he’s gone, so we don’t have to drag our feet anymore." Six-Eared Macaque did not budge, "Besides, he even said I’m not fit for Buddhism; isn’t that provoking your judgment, Master? And you’re not angry about it?"
"Are you really not going?" Xuanzang ignored Six-Eared Macaque’s latter words.
"I’m not going." Six-Eared Macaque refused.
"If you’re not going, then so be it." Xuanzang suddenly said.
Six-Eared Macaque looked up at Xuanzang, "I knew it, Master, you also think that I’m not wrong, clearly, it’s that mortal who is at fault—not only holding us back but even thinking that I’m not fit for Buddhism. You ought to know that for..."
"You may leave." Xuanzang interrupted Six-Eared Macaque.
"What?" Six-Eared Macaque was astonished, "Why?"
"The Great General was indeed right; I think you truly are not suitable for Buddhism. With your disposition, you are better off in a place where you can be more free, not suitable for being here." Xuanzang said.
Six-Eared Macaque only caught the words "truly not suitable for Buddhism".
"So, Master, you also think I’m not suitable for Buddhism? Just because of that mortal?" Six-Eared Macaque asked with a heavy tone.
"No, it’s not just that, your character conflicts with the principles of Buddhism. I have failed to teach you properly, perhaps because I am still inexperienced in Buddhism myself and don’t yet know how to instruct you. Therefore, you should find a more capable person to be your Master. I will not keep you here any longer."
Having said that, Xuanzang got down from his horse, took the reins from Six-Eared Macaque’s hands, and then led the horse and walked ahead.
"No! I only recognize you as my Master, I don’t acknowledge anyone else. Since you have accepted me as a disciple, you can’t just disband our mentor-disciple relationship lightly. Without you, how could I achieve Buddhahood?" Six-Eared Macaque said.
