Jilted by Day, Cuddled At Night-Chapter 601 Misunderstood Goodwill
The task set for their College of Humanities wouldn’t be too difficult, so on the very outskirts of the city, they would definitely be able to find some food.
Vivian was actually scared to go in, after all, that supermarket was pitch-dark.
But she was even more worried about Gu Yan going in alone.
"I’ll come with you. Anyway, I can run fast, so you don’t have to worry too much about me. Having an extra person is better for tending to each other, even if I just help keep watch," she offered.
Gu Yan thought about it and agreed; if there really was danger, Vivian could run faster than her and would definitely not get hurt.
She nodded, "Then it’s settled. If I do run into trouble and can’t get away, I’ll press the emergency signal, and you must leave immediately. I can’t let you fail the exam."
"Don’t say that; maybe we’ll both be fine," Vivian still hoped that she and Gu Yan could pass this final test together.
Each holding a stick in hand, they cautiously entered the supermarket, which was in complete disarray, probably a recreation of the story’s background setting.
Gu Yan and Vivian had seen these scenes in historical footage before, so despite a bit of nervousness, they were not truly afraid.
The area ahead wasn’t where the food was; the two moved cautiously, one after the other. Just as they were about to turn a corner, they suddenly heard a scream!
"Help!"
A student had been scared stiff by a zombie and was now collapsed on the ground, about to be bitten. Even though the zombie virus wouldn’t instantly turn her into a zombie, shouldn’t she be pressing the emergency help button at this time?
Gu Yan whispered, "Vivian, draw that zombie away and I’ll go save the student!"
She hadn’t wanted to meddle, but she couldn’t stand by and watch a classmate get bitten by a zombie. If they were lucky and it wasn’t a vital spot, it wouldn’t be too bad, but what if it bit the neck?
That would be game over!
Vivian immediately nodded and drew the zombie away... It was like flying a kite since she was fast on her feet.
With the zombie lured away, Gu Yan approached and helped up the girl who had been frozen with fear. She said, "If you can’t go on, press the emergency button right away."
Seeing the zombie gone, the girl finally calmed down. When she heard Gu Yan’s words, she frowned and pushed Gu Yan away, "Gu Yan, I know you. You actually want me to press the rescue button? What are you thinking? You think just because you’re the Gu Family’s young miss, you can make others fail?"
Gu Yan: "..."
She froze in place as the girl, upon seeing the zombie led away, promptly stood up and ran off.
Meanwhile, Vivian had led the zombie off to who knows where and then ran back, only to find Gu Yan squatting there in a daze.
"Xiaoyan, the instructors must have rescued that girl, right?"
Gu Yan stood up, shook her head, and responded, "Let’s focus on finding supplies."
"Oh."
They were quite lucky, finding a block of chocolate, two bottles of spring water, and a bag of compressed biscuits.
As night began to fall and knowing that zombies moved faster in the dark, for them from the College of Humanities with low combat abilities, it was better to find a place to hunker down as soon as possible.
If they got hungry, they could wait till daylight to go out and look for more food.
The two of them discussed and agreed that, in this neighborhood, with high-rise buildings, six-story Western-style houses, and standalone villas, one thing was certain: the standalone villas must have already been occupied.
Though the students weren’t enemies, due to everyone’s desire to earn credits, they wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice other students, like the ones who initially tried to take Gu Yan’s car.
They couldn’t overlook this.
Actually, for both Gu Yan and Vivian, it was the first time they directly faced such malicious human nature.
They couldn’t go to the high-rises either, as there were more zombies above, and most importantly, with the elevators gone, getting up and down was inconvenient.
Eventually, they headed towards a six-story Western-style house.
Finally, before the sun set, they found a satisfactory place— the top floor of a six-story Western-style house. In the background story, the homeowner appeared to be away, so there were no bloodstains or the like around the house.
However, there was hardly any furniture, and a thick layer of dust covered the floor. They switched on the low-grade lamp of the optical computer for illumination and cautiously checked every room, making sure to lock all the doors and windows securely.
Once they were sure it was safe, they cleaned up the master bedroom. The good news was that there was still water in the tap, which allowed them to clean the dust in the room somewhat.
But both of their movements were very light, as loud noises might attract zombies, or perhaps... other students.
After they had finished their chores, they drank some water, then Vivian only took a bite of chocolate before pushing the remaining chocolate and compressed biscuits towards Gu Yan.
"You eat it. I can go 24 hours without eating, no problems, especially now that we have water," she said.
Gu Yan nodded and didn’t insist on sharing with Vivian, eating in large bites.
Vivian looked at Gu Yan, whose brows were slightly furrowed, and asked, "Xiaoyan, you seem to be in a bad mood, what’s wrong?"
Gu Yan pursed her lips before replying, "It’s about the girl we saved at the supermarket earlier. Remember how you led the zombies away? I saw that she was in bad shape and worried she might get into trouble, so I told her to quickly send a distress signal to the instructors."
"Exactly, that’s the right thing to do! If we hadn’t acted, she might have been bitten by the zombies!"
Even if she hadn’t been bitten fatally, anyone would find it revolting to be bitten by such an ugly thing, not to mention that it would hurt like hell!
Gu Yan’s eyes were half downcast as she held a half-eaten piece of chocolate, "And then she actually scolded me, accusing me of causing her to fail. I just can’t figure out what she was thinking."
She rubbed her temples, "I simply wanted to save her, why would she think that way?"
Vivian was also naïve and was quite shocked upon hearing this, pausing for few seconds, and even the rabbit ears atop her head quivered.
"Xiaoyan, could it be that... she’s jealous of you?" Vivian recalled what she had overheard other students saying and instantly felt certain. She continued, "Because of your family background, many people both admire and envy you."
Gu Yan felt somewhat helpless when she heard that was the reason.
She said, "Our family backgrounds aren’t something we can choose. Once we enroll at Empire University, doesn’t that level the starting line? Besides, I’ve never used my parents’ or brother’s privileges against them!"
In truth, both young girls were unaware of the maliciousness in people’s hearts. Today’s assessment had taught them a very important lesson.
The next step was to hold out for the remaining hours, but obviously, the assessment wasn’t going to let them off so easily.
Because around two in the morning, someone knocked on the door of the room they were in.
