Chapter 124: The Rules

For now, everyone, including Michael, refrained from having their own conversations and distracting thoughts.

This was the announcer of the game. A grand figure who was going to explain the rules of the contest that meant everything to them.

At first, almost everyone was in awe of the giant hologram. How couldn’t they be? Most had never seen anything of the sort in their lifetimes.

Some players, however, seemed to care little. Almost as though it was a normal occurrence where they originated.

"As I said, this game is simple! All it requires of you is two factors!" Azalaus continued. "The first factor is... combat ability! That’s right, a raw test of your own power. The way this will be tested is measly. Within each of the ten zones in this peninsula, there exists a single flag waiting to be captured! However, getting this flag will not be easy. Far from it, in fact!" He said as the anticipation of the crowd continuously increased.

"Each zone flag will be protected by a monstrous beast! You must defeat it and claim its flag for your own. However, there is a game law that oversees this process. When battling zone beasts, you are not permitted to use more than one member of your army to help you!" Azalaus’s voice echoed.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

"W-what!?"

"Only one?"

"That’s insane!"

Azalaus smiled before continuing after a short pause.

"Once you have picked up a flag, you will earn 100 points on the regional leaderboard!" As Azalaus said this, another massive panel appeared in the air.

This was more of a vertically rectangular shape and looked to have a list of numbers going from one to ten.

"This leaderboard is important, as it is what will determine who is most victorious in this tournament! However, once you pick a flag up a single time, make sure to think hard before you place it back down, because you are not allowed to pick up a flag that you or your party has previously picked up. And that is where the second factor of this contest comes into play... war strategy!" Azalaus announced.

"Hmm..." Players continued taking notes.

"I see..."

"War strategy, huh?" Midas muttered, "Go on..."

"Once a flag is picked up and put back down, that zone is officially yours, and you will gain 100 points. However, any other player can pick up and replace that flag anywhere else in the zone to claim it. To prevent this, there must be a force that defends the flag while your main army continues to conquer in other zones. Or, you may choose to only claim one zone and risk placing low on the leaderboard." Azalaus said flamboyantly.

’I see...’ Midas mused, ’That adds a layer of difficulty that I wasn’t expecting. But... I think I’m well-suited for this.’

"When it comes to teaming up with other players, it is totally allowed, but a player may only team up with one other player at one time. The forming of a player coalition of over two souls is not permitted. And know this, breaking any rules of this contest will result in immediate elimination from the chance of victory! This game does not protect players, does not prevent war, and does not interfere with betrayal or slaughter. Non-players may fight freely, and may be used however a player sees fit."

Azalaus paused to let his words settle.

"Within each zone, there also exists what is called a bounty zone!" The hologram bellowed.

’There it is!’ Midas thought, paying close attention.

"A bounty zone is a smaller zone located within each zone. Every single bounty zone is worth varying points depending on the difficulty level. Some may be worth 100 points, just like the ten major zones. However, the most challenging bounty zones will be worth 300! Be very wary of these zones... for some of you, it may be nothing more than a death wish The most difficult of bounty zones house beasts that far overshadow the beasts that protect the ordinary major zones. To compare them would be stupendous." Azalaus said.

’T-three hundred points!?.’ Midas thought, slightly awestruck. He looked like he had just seen a treasure trove, his eyes gleaming with greed.

’There are only ten zones, so the most points someone could get ordinarily is 1000, excluding bounty zones. If I get one of the most difficult bounty zones, I will already be slightly under one-third of the way to the max! It will, at the very least, probably guarantee me a top-ten finish.’ He thought.

"Those who appear in the top ten leaderboard will be given a minor prize. Those in the top five will garner much greater prizes. And those in the top three will attain treasures that increase in value as the list climbs. Apart from these rules, there are many aspects of war and combat that you will need to figure out for yourselves. However, you are all now informed of the rules and should act on them. Now, everyone will receive their zones, and the tournament will soon begin." As Azalaus said these final words, his body dissipated into energy.

This energy, however, did not disperse into the air. Instead, it materialized into a timer that slowly counted down.

[10:00 Minutes Remaining...]

[09:59 Minutes Remaining...]

[09:57 Minutes Remaining...]

Just as ten seconds passed, every single player noticed a light appear before them.

The light materialized in front of everyone’s faces, turning into a smaller version of the large map in the sky. Within this smaller map, a picture of their face was plastered atop their respective zone.

’Only ten minutes, huh?’ Midas thought, looking closely at the smaller map. ’Looks like I am in forest zone three.’ He mused, ’There’s forest zones one, two, three, four, and five. And then there are mountain zone one, two, three, swamp zone, and savanna zone.’

He continued to memorize the larger map to the best of his ability.

Soon enough, the counter ticked down to only ten seconds left.

"Hey... you." Michael’s voice sounded from behind Midas.

Midas turned, his brow raised.

"What do you want?" He asked plainly.

Michael gritted his teeth, ’He speaks to me so arrogantly...’ He cursed inwardly, "I will make sure you don’t leave this game alive." He stated as seriously as he could.

Midas’s eyebrows furrowed, an intense glare piercing straight through Michael.

Michael was taken aback, forced to tilt his head back as he felt a powerful intention behind Midas’s eyes.

But then, Midas smiled.

"You’re very original, aren’t ya?" The crimson-eyed young man said, turning, "Let’s see who is superior in the tournament then... Michael Angelion." Midas said behind his back.

Michael clenched his fists. He tried, but couldn’t think of anything cool enough to reply with.

"Tsk!" He simply clicked his teeth in irritation before leaving.
