Chapter 97: Alchemy (2)

"Alchemy for beginners... yes... that is in fact this class, is it not..?"

Flipping through a few of those books, our Professor nodded to herself before glancing over at me, asking "Human girl, the class is for beginners, right? I don’t remember teaching you last year... or maybe I did and you just kept to yourself... hmm..."

She yawned once more and turned back to the book before nodding as I told her I was new and that this was for beginners, doing my best to ignore how she had just addressed me and somewhat insulted me.

Another few seconds of silence passed before she slammed a book shut and turned back to the chalkboard, using a wisp of her magic to call one of the many pieces of chalk over so that she could begin writing things down.

Her white coat fluttered with her somewhat exaggerated movements as she stared to list things off, and occasionally she would turn just enough to reveal her long, slender legs, ensuring that all of us were thoroughly paying attention... just to the wrong things.

"The basics of Alchemy are simple. Follow what is written down to the very final letter, never attempt to stray from the recipe no matter what you think you know, do NOT even think of leaving your stations unattended when you are brewing and most importantly... understand that the things you make can end up causing serious harm to you and those around if, sometimes leading to death.

I... suppose those are my classroom rules as well. If you wish to talk to one another, study together, work together or what have you I do not care. All that I care about is that this lab remains as spotless as it is now, that no one leaves here with some sort of injury, and most importantly... none of you attempt to use any of my equipment or the Academy’s materials for anything unrelated to the lesson plan."

She spun around and stared at all of us as she said that final point, and where she had been ditzy and relaxed for all of the time we had seen of her so far, the fire that was burning in those amethyst eyes was enough to make us all shiver.

Even Galiena sat up straighter as the Professor swept her gaze over her, and for a moment we were all reminded that no matter how eccentric or kind these people might seem, in order to become a Professor here they had to be the best of the best.

And Professor Jezebyra wasn’t just an eccentric Alchemy teacher who often made ’mistakes’ in her personal brews and experiments; she was also a very talented mage who had made a fortune as an adventurer before seeking out a quieter, more stable livelihood to pursue her passions.

"Now, that aside we will be doing a lot of basic brewing to start the year off. I need to see if you can follow instructions, if you understand how to use your hands and brains, and if you are actually worth teaching."

She remained serious for another few moments before turning back to the board and scribbling down another couple of things, stepping back and tapping them with her chalk as she showed us the outline for the year.

"Every single month you are going to be working towards proficiency in another kind of potion type. We’ll start with simple variations of it then slowly build up into the intermediate stage, where you will be brewing large batches of potion day in and day out.

If we have the time or if any of you show promise you might be able to learn some more refined and potent recipes, however I do not want to put you under false pretenses; most, if not all of you will meet the expectation yet never exceed it.

Alchemy is an art form that requires genuine talent and immaculate control, both of your body and of your mind. It is not something you can simply improve via endless repetition, and you need to understand that here and now."

She wasn’t back to her relaxed self but this was definitely much better than the ’harshness’ from before; seeing that she was taking this seriously after showing up late, underdressed and somewhat exhausted gave us all confidence in her again, which was quite nice.

"As for the individual classes, they will typically be structured in week long segments. To start we will go over the recipe, understand the why’s and how’s, do’s and don’ts, before we move onto controlled brewing."

Gesturing over at the various potion brewing stations with her chalk, Professor Jezebyra continued on, saying "Everyone will watch as I complete a full brewing cycle, I will verbally quiz you on the processes, and then you will being brewing together as a group. Then at the end of the week everyone will be on their own, where you will submit the potion for your grade."

She received nods from everyone as we looked between her and the stations, no longer able to just lose ourselves to her body as we instead had to worry about the class itself and how we were going to perform going forwards.

Fikola was even behaving herself as she studied Professor Jezebyra’s face and not her pronounced labia, so I knew that we were all on the same page currently; we wanted to learn and pass this class because doing so would give us some credibility for our futures.

We could be considered Novice Alchemists upon passing this class, and that would open up a steady stream of decent money for the rest of our lives as we brewed the basic potions that everyone needed.

It was after that last bit though that the serious and ’good’ Professor Jezebyra disappeared, allowing for the return of the Professor I knew and loved a lot as she yawned and began to clear off the board. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Now... I suppose we should begin learning the most basic potion there is... hah..."

As a genius who pioneered a lot of potion variants - good and bad, both of which provided a whole lot of information for everyone else - this must have been something she dreaded doing every single year, but without it she wouldn’t be able to fund her research and have a top of the line laboratory that was funded by someone else.

"This week we’ll be going over how to make... hmm... raise your hands if you want to try and make simple salves, and keep them down if you wish to attempt to brew a relaxant..."

She turned around lazily and looked around at the class, taking in the severe lack of raised hands as everyone else decided they wanted to brew... and I felt a little embarrassed since I was the only one who raised my hand.
