Chapter 76: Civilization And Society (2)

"The main topics of the year are going to revolve around these four dominant Civilizations; the two Empires of Humanity, the three Elven Forests, the Confederation of Fangs and the Dwarven Mountain Queendoms.

Each of them have shaped history in one way or another, and each can be further explored to discuss the surrounding civilizations as well as any that were absorbed into them over these many centuries, if not millennia.

We will begin this class officially in two days, and until then I would like to get a gauge of how knowledgeable everyone here is on what topics. That will allow me to free up precious time on certain topics that you all are more knowledgable on and delve deeper into that which demands more attention, or even begin discussion on more niche subjects."

Pointing at the four separate points, Professor Hollishire surveyed the class with that same smile before asking "Now, who can tell me which of these is the oldest Civilization, and which is the youngest? Raise your hand and only answer when I call on you."

Of the two dozen or so of us in the classroom, only five of us raised our hands; me, Morgana, two other Human’s and surprisingly an Orc, though I only say that because I wasn’t expecting to see an Orc in a class like this...

Because... Orcs were renowned for their love of physical activity and a distinct lack of care for things that didn’t revolve around improving those physical activities; Alchemists were revered because of their healing potions and aphrodisiacs while bards were somewhat appreciated, but historians... not so much.

As a pastime perhaps, but not as a subject of study...

"Natalie, which is the youngest?"

Jolting me out of my brief reverie, Professor Hollishire smiled at me, stunning me for a brief moment before I answered "Technically it’s a tie between the Holy Amor Empire - Human - and the reestablished Mooncaller’s Glade for the Elves, though that would be up for debate..."

Her smile widened at that, and intrigue flashed in her brown eyes as she nodded and said "That is true, and the debate would be focused around the reestablished Mooncaller’s Glade since they were wiped out for nearly four centuries. It took an additional three to regrow the Mooncaller’s Glade and reclaim their lands, during which the Holy Amor Empire began to rise. Very good~!"

The praise made me smile a little as I nodded back at her, feeling a little smug with how Morgana furrowed her brow as she stared at the board but also wondering if I had played myself into being a bit too... ’nerdy’.

"Now, Lu’Shaki, can you tell me which of the Civilizations listed is the oldest?"

The Orc grunted and straightened herself out before answering, her voice filling the room perfectly and making me blink a few times as I studied her a bit closer; she was still muscular and her two tusks poked out from her lips, but she wasn’t as ’overwhelming’ in terms of presence like most Orcs were.

She didn’t dominate the room because she exuded the aura of someone who could snap you in two like a twig, but instead she began to command the room’s attention with her voice, which was sonorous and pleasant on the ears.

"The Confederation of Fangs by over four centuries. Yes the Asgarial Forest existed for an unknown amount of time before, but the Elves within were not unified yet. The Orc Tribes, Caninekin Packs, Horned Herds and even a few Serpentine Dens were all working together well before anyone else."

"Very good! Yes the Asgarial Forest loomed over the continent well before everyone else, but its inhabitants were not yet the tight knit group of Solara worshipping Elves that we know today. Whether you wish to categorize the loose pacts that maintained the peace on the Ur’Gatal Steppes as a Civilization is up for debate too, but many agree that it is the birth of the Confederation of Fangs."

Clapping her hands together with a big smile, Professor Hollishire was radiating excitement as she then asked "Alright, that is as good a place as any to start! I did say I was going to begin from the beginning... and that would be two millennia back, which was when the Confederation of Fangs was ’loosely’ formed."

Erasing everything from the board and rewriting that down, Professor Hollishire remained facing the board as she asked "Now, can someone tell me which of the Orc Tribes spearheaded the formation of the Confederation? Someone just say it out loud for me."

There was a moment of pause as we all waited for someone to speak first, and right before I mustered the courage the smooth, quiet voice of Lusamine filled the class as she said "It was the Red Tusk Tribe.", making our Professor nod her head as she began to jot that on the board.

As she did so I found my eyes roaming her figure, tracing out the nice curves of her hips before focusing on the board again as she asked "And what about the Canine Packs?", which I answered before anyone else, deciding to just lean into the role of a very knowledgeable student.

This was all in a plethora of books anyways, so I wasn’t worried about someone calling me out on the basis of me being a Commoner... not that there were many who cared, but it was better to err on the side of caution anyways.

"The Zara Pack."

"Correct! What about the Herds and the Dens?"

Two answers came out immediately, one from a horned hunk who shouted "My Iron Hoof Herd!" and the other from Morgana, who was somewhat drowned out by the hunk; her "Dimscale Den." was almost music to my ears the way she enunciated each part of that, and I was even more happy about this class than I had been before.

"Correct to you both~! Thankfully it seems you all know some of the basics, so let’s move on to some more fun stuff, hm~? If you didn’t, just jot it down and memorize it for later, because all four of these groups are pivotal to a whole lot in the world today."
