Chapter 104: Enchanting (2)

"The Runic Alphabet is an example of mortal ingenuity at its absolute finest. Across the entire continent dozens upon dozens of different Tribes, Herds, Packs, Queendoms, Empires and everything else all came up with the same idea, which was to give magic meaning via written language.

In the beginning it was entirely unique to those different places, with some having more complex characters than the others which resulted in vastly different sorts of enchanted items. To name an example of the complex and the simple, there were the Shaman’s of the Cracked Beak Tribe - all Ravenkin or Crowkin - who invented a language of harsh lines intersecting at different angles to mean different things.

It was simple in theory yet impossibly complex, with some of their relics still being completely unknown even to this day. Even the most basic character they used - just a single line - could have four different meanings depending on its angle, let alone when you began to add even more to just that one line.

The most complex character we know of completely from those Shaman’s has over 236 lines, though its complexity comes from being a merger of four separate characters into a single, larger character.

As for one of the simplest and most accessible enchanting languages we know of today it would almost certainly belong to the Northern Orcs, who utilized pictoglyphs to enchant their war gear. Symbols of the element, the shape, and intensity and more were crudely etched into the material before being filled back in with a different, mana absorbent material to give it power."

Professor Alexia quickly showed us two different examples of the languages she was discussing on the board, showcasing the line work of the Cracked Beak Tribe as well as the symbols that the Northern Orcs - who would go on to become one of the continent’s many powerhouses - utilized for their own magical gear.

Both had their uses and both were beautiful in their own way, but after tapping her chalk against them both Professor Alexia said "What I just wrote down were the basic enchantments that are commonly referred to as ’Mana Sheathing’. As the name suggests it is when you cover something completely in mana, typically a weapon.

Now, as you can also see the enchantment that the Orcs made use of was long and occupied a lot of space, whereas the Cracked Beak Tribe was a compact collection of lines that could be inscribed practically anywhere.

These are two very different styles of enchanting, and both have pros and cons which we can get into later. For now though I want to introduce you to the Runic Alphabet created a millennia and a half ago."

The way her chalk danced across the board was rather pleasing to the ears and certainly on the eyes, each line drawn with precision and purpose as she began to write down the needed runes to create the ’Mana Sheathing’ enchantment.

"The Runic Alphabet was created by the more prolific enchanters of the time coming together and learning from one another at the Summit Of Umotek, studying the enchanting languages that everyone had come up with and learning how to merge it into a single, proficient language.

Those other languages are still around to this day - since every language offers something that the Runic Alphabet of today cannot - but they are nowhere near as common as they used to be, which is debated as either a good or a bad thing."

What she revealed to us in between the Cracked Beak Tribe’s version and the Northern Orc version was definitely a healthy mix of both; it was more complicated than simply depicting a crude blade-like shape being surrounded in some sort of force but definitely not as complicated as the multi line character that was completely compact and intricate.

"Where the Cracked Beak Tribe got it done with a single character, the Runic Alphabet requires three; this rune here is for shape, this rune is for power, and this rune helps keep it under control. Unlike the four required by the Northern Orcs, it is far more space efficient and ultimately more potent of an enchantment, though the variation that the Northern Orcs get ensures that isn’t always completely accurate."

From one to three to four, the three separate enchantment lines all displayed a different way to achieve the same result, and that alone was quite fascinating; I was already aware of the various languages that were used, but seeing them in person and knowing that I was now going to actually use them...

This was the sort of thing that got my brain going, and I was very much looking forwards to this class for the rest of the year; I just needed to hope that I could actually put ’pen to paper’ and make proper use of these enchantments myself, because it was yet another avenue for me to make money.

If I could get even just an average understanding and proficiency in both this and Alchemy, I could guarantee myself a very generous lifestyle where dining on good quality monster meat and drinking some good wine was something that could be done multiple times a week instead of just once a month.

The things I could buy with that sort of income stream was more than enough to motivate me, and knowing how powerful money was in any world meant I had even more incentive to try my hardest in these final two classes of mine.

Not only could I get a nice house somewhere inside of Mythia with that sort of money, but I could also begin to afford a lifestyle of comfort with a splash of decadence here and there, whether that come from extremely delectable food and wine or the more ’obvious’ visits to some places that offer premium services...

Like a courtesan hall where I could wine and dine with a beautiful woman before having her take care of my every need as we made sweet succulent love in a bed together, falling asleep with a full belly, fulfilled desires and the warmth of another person pressed against us.

Or I could just go to a normal brothel every night and have sex with whoever caught my eye for a little bit of coin, though that was a bit less appealing than the extremely graceful courtesans that worked in pleasure because they wanted it, not because it was the only place they could work.

Either way I was praying that my goon brain could figure out a way to make this work since it would ensure future gooning in more pleasurable ways, and having money made potentially dating someone a lot more appealing than it currently was.
