Chapter 293: The Bold Outsider ( 293 )
The peaceful quiet of the rest stop didn’t last long.
The sound of wheels crunching over gravel echoed down the path as another carriage arrived, flanked by two escort wagons and two mounted guards.
Hazuki glanced up mid-bite, chewing on his grilled meat skewer as the group rolled in with a puff of dust.
The adventurer escort party stepped down first—four humans, one dwarf, and a halfling.
Then the main carriage door opened, revealing an ornate design with silver trim and velvet curtains.
A girl stepped out, maybe twelve years old, wearing noble-trimmed merchant robes. Her arms crossed, her chin raised, and her face already scrunched in irritation.
Hazuki took another slow bite of meat, choosing a spot not too close, just near enough to hear.
"My father hired all of you!! Why can’t we continue to our destination!?" the girl shouted, her voice shrill and impatient.
One of the adventurers rubbed his neck, clearly used to this.
"I’m sorry, my lady," he said carefully, "but traveling at night is dangerous. Monsters are more active, and not just more aggressive—they’re stronger after dusk."
"But I hired every one of you!!" she stomped, pointing at them. "You!! A full D+ rank party! And my guards! You should be able to handle it!"
The party looked away in sync. A few winced.
Before another word, a calm voice cut through the air.
"My lady," said the butler, who had stepped out behind her, adjusting his gloves with a bow. "We must stick to the plan. You know how strict your father is. Ignoring protocol will not only risk your safety—but also his wrath."
The girl puffed her cheeks, arms crossed even tighter.
Hazuki kept munching silently, barely hiding the grin on his face.
"Rich kid. Definitely rich. Definitely spoiled." he muttered.
Ridan, floating beside the campfire flame, leaned just slightly out of the crate.
"Wanna bet she screams at least three more times before bedtime?"
"Nope. She already hit her first. I’m just counting the seconds now."
The girl’s sharp eyes scanned the area—until they landed squarely on Hazuki, who was still munching his grilled meat with casual disinterest. freёwebnoѵel.com
She stiffened, her expression twisting into offended fury.
"What are you looking at, peasant!!?"
Hazuki paused mid-chew, tilted his head slightly, and gave her a blank, dumbfounded stare.
"Huh? Who’s gonna look at you?" he replied flatly, voice bored.
He pointed at his meat skewer. "I’m more interested in this meat than in some loud, bratty kid yelling about bedtime travel."
The girl gasped.
Hazuki took another bite, then spoke while chewing. "No way a guy like me would be interested in a kiddo like you. Grow up first before saying stuff like that."
The adventurer party visibly stiffened. One of the escorts turned away, stifling a laugh. Even the dwarf among them snorted into his palm.
The girl’s face went red, both from embarrassment and rage. "H-How dare you speak to me like that!? I’m the daughter of—"
"Yeah, yeah, merchant this, daughter that, royal shoes whatever." Hazuki waved her off, still chewing, "Take it up with someone who cares."
The atmosphere shifted the moment the two guards stepped forward, blades drawn with a soft metallic hiss. Their eyes were sharp.
D+ rank adventurer party took a few confident steps ahead, hands on weapons, their expressions smug.
Hazuki, still crouched beside his small fire, didn’t flinch. He calmly chewed another bite of meat, glancing at them with half-lidded eyes.
"Oho? So none of you were taught manners, huh?" he said lazily. "Y’know... asking for a fight while someone’s eating? That’s just plain rude. Didn’t your moms teach you better?"
One of the adventurers snarled. "Hah!? How dare you mock us!? Do you know who we are!? We’re a full Rank D+ party, hired to protect this lady! You’d best learn your place, outsider."
Hazuki blinked.
Then looked up at them with absolute boredom as he finished the last bite of his skewer.
"Hmm? Adventurer rank... what?"
Without another word, he reached into his side bag, pulled out something, and flicked it lazily onto the ground.
The silver adventurer plate hit the dirt with a soft clink.
All eyes locked on the plate.
A beat of silence passed. The adventurers’ faces dropped—smugness melting into visible unease. The guards hesitated. Even the bratty girl blinked, suddenly unsure.
Hazuki casually wiped his fingers on a cloth, never even bothering to look at them again.
"I’m eating here." He said quietly. "If you’ll excuse me."
He pulled out a second skewer and bit into it like nothing happened.
There’s no way this guy’s a real B+ rank." one of the adventurers sneered, arms crossed.
Another chuckled mockingly, waving toward Hazuki. "Yeah, look at him! I’ve seen real B+ adventurers. Full party. High-end gear. Girls hangin’ off their arms like ornaments. This guy? He’s got cheap clothes and no armor."
"He probably faked that plate," the halfling added with a grin. "Carrying it around like it means something. Probably using it to get free meals."
Hazuki didn’t say a word.
Still sitting by the fire, he reached over and picked up a large firewood log from the pile beside him.
He stood slowly.
The flame of the campfire flickered, catching in his eyes as he channeled a faint pulse of mana into the log—a low hum vibrating through the wood.
Then, with a casual motion like throwing a stick for a dog, Hazuki tossed the log straight at them.
It flew like a blur of compressed wind.
The ground erupted in dust and sparks as the log slammed into the dirt just inches in front of the party, cracking the stone beneath and kicking up a wave of heat.
All six adventurers stumbled back instinctively, eyes wide, weapons half-drawn.
"Everyone!! Formation!!" the party leader barked.
In an instant, the D+ rank adventurer party snapped into position, weapons drawn, feet planted. The two guards on horseback followed suit, blades raised and scanning.
Hazuki stood still, holding his now-cold skewer with a sigh.
"Man... I’m losing my appetite because of you, bratty." he muttered, glancing toward the puffed-up noble girl.
She was glaring, arms still crossed—completely oblivious to the shift in atmosphere.
The adventurer leader pointed his blade toward Hazuki. "Prepare to attack!!"
"Yes, leader!" the others responded.
Hazuki yawned, completely unbothered. Then he raised one hand lazily and said—
"You might wanna focus on what’s behind you before charging at me."
"Huh!?"
Several heads turned.
And froze.
