Chapter 41: Chapter 41: The Only Way

Mutated Zombies, including this Blood Demon, all shared one characteristic: they were enormous.

This particular Blood Demon was as large as a Mecha. Right now, Fang Tianhe and Shen Han were piloting their Mechas, locked in a stalemate with the Blood Demon.

However, despite the stalemate, the fight itself wasn’t particularly intense.

Fang Tianhe, piloting the Heaven-Sundering Mecha, brought his Vibrating Giant Blade down in a vertical slash, creating a massive, five-meter-long wound on the Blood Demon’s body.

However, the wound healed in the blink of an eye.

The effect was like trying to cut water with a knife—it simply flowed back together.

Neither melee weapons nor firearms had any real effect on the Blood Demon.

In fact, research institutes hadn’t even dared to conclude whether this type of Blood Demon could truly be classified as a living organism.

The only saving grace was that the Blood Demon’s Attack Power was quite weak. For now, at least, it was being overpowered by the two Mechas.

But everyone knew this wasn’t a sustainable solution. They couldn’t keep fighting a battle of attrition with this Blood Demon, not in the zombie-infested city center.

Dragging this out would only attract more and more Zombies. The most terrifying part was the possibility of attracting other Mutated Zombies.

At that point, they would be in real danger.

Aside from this unpredictable risk, the Mechas’ Energy was also a major problem.

Under normal circumstances, a single Mecha could run for at least 10 hours on a full Energy charge.

But the Energy consumed in a high-intensity battle like this was on a completely different level; at this rate, they could only last for half an hour at most.

Even if they attempted a fighting retreat, they likely wouldn’t even make it out of the city center, let alone escape Tianshan City.

Lin Xinghai used his Investigation Technique on the Blood Demon.

Name: Blood Demon

Physique: 532 points

Power: 459 points

Speed: 638 points

Note: A strange elemental-type creature.

"Is this Blood Demon really unkillable?" Lin Xinghai asked Roger beside him, glancing at the information on the system panel.

"Basically, yes. If you run into one, your only option is to try and escape." Roger’s brow furrowed deeply.

"Basically?" Lin Xinghai immediately latched onto the keyword. "That means there is a way to kill it. What is it?"

"The Blood Demon is completely immune to physical attacks. Energy Attacks, on the other hand, will have at least some effect."

"You saw that strike just now when the Corps Leader used his Heaven-Splitting Superpower and sliced the Blood Demon in two, right? Did you see the bloody mist evaporating from the wound? That was caused by the impact of the Energy."

"If only we had a Fire Ability User. Fire deals the most damage to this kind of Blood Demon. As long as you evaporate all the blood that it’s made of, it will die," Roger sighed.

But Lin Xinghai’s eyes lit up when he heard this. "Fire! What about a Burning Bullet?"

"It won’t work." Roger shook his head.

However, he had barely spoken when he saw Lin Xinghai had already switched his ammunition and fired. BANG!

With Lin Xinghai’s Gun Technique, he could easily land a shot even from over 300 meters away.

The Blood Demon’s Defense Power seemed weak; a casual slash from Fang Tianhe could open a wound five or six meters long.

But that was thanks to the power of a Mecha.

When the Burning Bullet hit the Blood Demon, it only penetrated five centimeters before getting stuck.

Of course, a Burning Bullet’s true power wasn’t in its physical impact, but in the all-consuming flames it unleashed.

BOOM!

A massive Fireball erupted in an instant, completely engulfing the Blood Demon.

The Blood Demon was indeed afraid of fire. Enveloped by the flames, it let out a furious roar.

But that was all.

As the blood in the Demon’s body flowed, the flames covering it sloughed off like water. Even the Burning Bullet was swiftly expelled from its body.

The Burning Bullet fell to the ground, still spewing a constant stream of fire, but the Blood Demon was already some distance away.

The entire process took less than a second. While it couldn’t be said that it posed zero threat to the Blood Demon, the effect was certainly negligible.

Roger seemed to have anticipated this outcome. His tone was grave as he said, "This is what’s so insane about the Blood Demon. The chemical agents sprayed from the Burning Bullet simply can’t adhere to its body."

"Only a Fire Ability User, who can continuously control flames to burn it, is able to deal sufficient damage."

But Lin Xinghai didn’t give up. He frowned in concentration. ’There has to be a way,’ he thought.

Meanwhile, Fang Tianhe and Shen Han were having a heated discussion over the comms channel about how to escape.

Fang Tianhe: "We can’t drag this on. You take the other Mercenaries and retreat immediately. I’ll find a way to hold this Blood Demon off."

Shen Han: "You can hold the Blood Demon off, but how will you escape afterward?"

Fang Tianhe: "I have my ways."

Shen Han: "What ways could you possibly have? Your Mecha’s remaining Energy must be down to 60% by now!"

Fang Tianhe: "Even without the Mecha, my chances of escaping alone are the highest. We can’t all just wait here to die together!"

Shen Han: "No, I’m staying. The others can retreat first."

Fang Tianhe: "Without a Mecha escort, how are the other members supposed to leave Tianshan City?"

Shen Han: "Then I’ll just unbind from my Mecha and have them send someone else to pilot it. I’m staying, no matter what."

Fang Tianhe: "..."

Their conversation over the comms channel could be heard in the multi-purpose SUV, and the Mercenaries inside fell silent. No one knew what to do.

Besides, if the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps lost Fang Tianhe, would it still be the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps?

It would likely either disband or be absorbed by another Mercenary Corps.

Lin Xinghai wasn’t paying attention to their conversation. His gaze remained fixed on the distant battlefield.

One plan after another surfaced in his mind, only to be dismissed.

Suddenly, a new idea surfaced in his mind.

The idea seemed absurd, but it just might be possible.

Of course, he needed to verify one thing first.

Lin Xinghai quickly loaded an Armor-Piercing Bullet into his magazine, raised his weapon, and fired a shot.

BANG!

The bullet struck the Blood Demon’s body, but as expected, it caused no substantial damage.

However, that wasn’t what Lin Xinghai was focused on. He stared intently at the spot where the Armor-Piercing Bullet finally stopped.

It had penetrated a meter into the Blood Demon’s body.

However, as the blood inside the Demon pushed outward, the Armor-Piercing Bullet was also rapidly expelled. It was forced out in a mere five seconds.

Such a Healing Ability would be enough to make an ordinary person despair, but Lin Xinghai’s eyes only grew brighter.

’Shooting an Armor-Piercing Bullet one meter deep into the Blood Demon’s body has no effect, of course.’

’But what if that Armor-Piercing Bullet were replaced with a Burning Bullet?’

’A Burning Bullet detonating completely inside its body, and lasting for a full five seconds... The damage it would cause would be at least ten times, maybe even dozens of times, greater than the last one!’
