Invincible Dad-Chapter 598 - The Fall of the City (Part 1)_1
Chang'an City had fallen!
The city walls swarmed with the dense ranks of the Moon Clan. Overwhelmed by their elite forces, the Martial Artists of Chang'an City suffered over a hundred casualties in an instant.
The Watchmen's hearts bled. The spiritual energy of Hua Country was scarce and constraints within the human body made cultivation to the Martial Ancestor Realm exceedingly difficult. The instantaneous loss of over one hundred lives was a colossal blow to Hua Country. And this was only the beginning; the number of casualties per second was already in the double digits.
Without any formations to hinder them, the Moon Clan's siege was nothing short of a one-sided slaughter. Chang'an City had no power to resist.
"You scoundrel, how dare you!" Zhang Henshui roared.
Though blind and aged, he vigorously struck his zither strings. With a series of sharp snaps as the strings broke, spiritual energy pulsed outwards on the sound waves, instantly killing a hundred Moon Clan members on the wall.
But the price was steep. An Upper Crescent Moon Clan leader slashed his arm, leaving blood gushing from the wound.
Zhang Henshui couldn't feel the pain from the injury. He was filled with nothing but hatred. I hate that I'm not strong enough. If I could break through the constraints in my body and truly reach the Golden Core Realm, I wouldn't be so passive.
"Kill this old man."
Attacking alongside the Upper Crescent leader were two other leaders from the Lower Crescent. One was late-stage Golden Core Realm, while the other two were mid-stage. Any one of them was stronger than Zhang Henshui, let alone three of them teaming up. He was forced back again and again. With Chang'an's gates wide open, he was powerless to provide support; even protecting himself was a distant hope.
The situation was similar for the other Watchmen and the human experts of the Divine Gate Realm, and in some cases, even more dire. Facing an enemy that outnumbered them several times over, they were grievously wounded in the blink of an eye.
Five Watchmen, seven Divine Gate Realm experts, and nineteen peak Ninth Grade warriors were all trapped in a desperate battle!
"Ahhh!" Qian Xiao's eyes were bloodshot.
He constantly tried to block the invading Moon Clan at the city gates, but without a formation to stop them, most of the Moon Clan simply flew over the walls, not even bothering with the gates.
"Grandfather!" Zhang Suzi's vision blurred with tears.
She didn't go to help her grandfather or the other Watchmen. Instead, she stood guard in front of Ruan Lan, driving away every Moon Clan member who tried to attack her. Although Zhang Suzi was a peak Divine Gate expert and one of the twelve Watchmen, her actual combat strength was less than a tenth of her grandfather's. Her defense was barely holding, but she did not retreat a single step.
In just two short minutes, a long sword pierced her abdomen. Her vision went dark, and she nearly fainted. The attacker was an early Golden Core Realm member of the Moon Clan with a full beard and a ferocious expression, looking utterly terrifying.
"Die," the Golden Core expert sneered, preparing to twist his sword upwards and slice Zhang Suzi in two.
But his movements suddenly froze. A different sword had just pierced his head.
It was Xu Yiyi. She withdrew her sword and looked at Zhang Suzi, her lips moving for a long moment, unsure of what to say.
It was Zhang Suzi who spoke, her voice trembling. "I… I'm all right."
Enduring the pain, she pulled the sword from her abdomen. Using it to prop herself up, she struggled to her feet, gasping for breath. Her face was pale, completely drained of color, and her eyes filled with sorrow. The once harmonious Chang'an City was no longer the city of "long peace," but had transformed into a mountain of corpses and a river of blood.
"Invade my Chang'an, and you shall be annihilated!" Zhang Suzi wielded the very sword that had gravely wounded her, relentlessly cutting down the Moon Clan cultivators who charged at her.
One.
Ten.
One hundred.
The cost was that her injuries grew ever more severe, becoming life-threatening, but not a single member of the Moon Clan could get near Ruan Lan.
Clutching the Formation Chessboard, Ruan Lan's eyes were filled with tears. She kept repeating, "Su Zi, hang in there! Just four more minutes! The formation will be ready in four minutes…"
"Then I'll buy you four more minutes!"
A pure white light radiated from Zhang Suzi's body as her wounds slowly healed and her spirit climbed to its peak. She was burning her own lifespan!
Ruan Lan didn't dare to look, much less ask. Her own spiritual energy was already depleted, and she had long since consumed her last elixir. She, too, was now overdrawing on the very essence of her life. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Faster, hurry up, Ruan Lan screamed inwardly. Her once jet-black, lustrous hair quietly began to turn white, first a few strands, then ten, then a hundred.
"Hurry up!" Ruan Lan sobbed, her hands moving frantically to set up the formation.
「Outside Chang'an City」
Bodies littered the ground. There were Martial Artists from Chang'an and corpses of the Moon Clan, among them a fallen Watchman.
「Within the city」
A peak Ninth Grade Great Martial Sect led a hundred Martial Artists, trying to intercept the Moon Clan pouring into the city. But their numbers were far too few. Facing over a thousand members of the Foreign Clans who had already entered, it was like trying to extinguish a raging fire with a single cup of water.
WHOOSH!
Dozens of fires erupted, setting many houses ablaze, accompanied by the arrogant, booming laughter of the Moon Clan.
The tens of thousands of ordinary residents within the city remained eerily calm. Facing the Moon Clan who kicked down their doors, they showed no fear, nor did they beg for mercy. They simply stared calmly at the invaders.
Then, with a flash of blades, heads rolled.
"You beasts! Why kill the old, the weak, and the young? Come at me!" the peak Ninth Grade Great Martial Sect roared at the sky, his eyes blood-red.
But aside from the dozen or so Moon Clan members blocking him, the rest were busy destroying the city's infrastructure. Their main goal was to ruin the formation array, killing people as they went. In just a few moments, hundreds of ordinary families had been slaughtered.
"Mommy, what's happening outside? It's so loud," a young girl who had just woken up asked.
In a small house, a woman who looked to be in her thirties replied gently, "We're playing hide-and-seek with your big sister, Su Zi."
"Really? Ann loves playing hide-and-seek!"
"Yes," the woman smiled. "So you need to hide. No matter what happens, Ann, you must not come out, okay?"
"Okay."
The seven-year-old girl rubbed her sleepy eyes and skillfully ran to hide in the cabinet.
BANG!
The door was kicked open.
The little girl quickly clamped her hands over her mouth and nose, trying to breathe silently so Sister Su Zi wouldn't find her. This was how she always hid.
But today's game of hide-and-seek felt strange.
The little girl heard a soft squelch, and a head came rolling to a stop right in front of the cabinet. Through the crack in the door, she saw the smile on her mother's face, as if she were saying, "Ann, hide well. Don't ever come out, okay?"
A muffled sob escaped her lips. The little girl squeezed her mouth shut, refusing to make a sound, but tears streamed down her face, pattering silently on the floor.
"Tch, this woman's blood is no good. If only there was a child's blood," a dismissive voice muttered just outside the cabinet.
"WAH!"
The cry of a baby echoed from the end of the alley, and the footsteps quickly receded.
The little girl waited a long, long time before her trembling hands pushed open the cabinet door. She saw her once-gentle mother, now just a shriveled husk of skin.
"Mommy…"
She dissolved into tears.
Such tragedies were unfolding all across the city.
