Chapter 90: I will kill her myself

"Nix, come with me."

Rory’s voice was cold, sharp with fury barely held in check.

She had never felt anger like this before.

For days, the alliance staff had treated her with warmth and sincerity. Every morning, they brought her the freshest produce harvested from protected biogardens, the cleanest and most refined beast cores they could acquire. They laughed easily around her, calling her Boss with genuine affection, sharing scraps of alliance gossip and news from the frontlines as though she were one of their own.

She had accepted their care without hesitation—had enjoyed it, even.

But now, as smoke darkened the sky and explosions tore through the alliance headquarters, she realized something with painful clarity.

She could not stay hidden in the cabin.

Not as their boss. Not as their friend. Not as someone who had benefited from their loyalty.

To do so would make her a coward.

Nix met her gaze instantly, understanding her intent without the need for explanation. He slammed a fist to his chest and nodded hard.

"Female Master," he said solemnly, "do whatever you must. I’ll follow you—whether it leads to survival or death."

The moment the words left his mouth, his body shifted. Fur rippled over muscle as he transformed into his massive beast form. Without hesitation, he scooped Rory onto his back and launched forward, sprinting from the cabin toward the battlefield where the arrogant serpent reigned.

Behind them, Burnt Dumpling watched them disappear into the smoke—but did not follow.

Instead, the small bird turned sharply and darted back inside. He flapped into Rory’s bedroom, landed on the desk, and pecked twice—hard—at the thin branch resting in the flowerpot.

"Alright, alright, I know," Yuel’s weary voice came from within the tangle of vines. "Stop pecking."

"Chirp!"

Two sharper pecks followed immediately, precise and unmistakably vindictive.

"Okay, okay," Yuel snapped back, breath tight with strain. "I’m trying!"

He grimaced inwardly, teeth clenched. He could tell without a doubt that Kather was venting his frustrations on him—deliberately. Of course the birdman wouldn’t stand by and allow their Female Master to charge into a battlefield alone. And of course the timing wasn’t accidental.

This was retaliation.

A soft indigo glow began to seep along the slender branch wrapped around Yuel’s arm, light pulsing faintly beneath the bark. One by one, tender green leaves unfurled, trembling as power gathered within them. The air thickened, humming with restrained energy. Then, with visible effort, a small translucent blossom pushed its way into existence—fragile, faintly luminous, its four delicate petals barely holding their shape as they fluttered weakly in the glow.

Yuel exhaled sharply, sweat beading at his temple.

Kather stared at the flower, head tilted, eyes narrowing in obvious dissatisfaction.

"Chirp!"

He pecked Yuel again, harder this time.

"This is already pushing my limits," Yuel snapped, irritation breaking through his composure. "Your Female Master Rory is waiting—go!"

Rory? How dare he call her that so casually?!

Yuel’s glare burned holes into the birdman’s back as Kather launched himself away, indignation and exhaustion tangling tightly in his chest.

But there was no time to argue. Kather snatched the four-petaled blossom, swallowed it whole, and launched himself into the air, wings beating furiously as he flew toward the battlefield.

Rory and Nix arrived just in time to witness horror unfold.

The colossal serpent reared back, flinging an alliance worker high into the air as if tossing away a broken toy. Its blood-smeared jaws opened wide, poised to bite the man cleanly in half.

"STOP!"

Rory activated her ability.

A towering column of water surged upward, crackling with red lightning, and slammed directly toward the woman standing atop the serpent’s head.

She knew better than to target the Rank 9 directly.

If she couldn’t damage the body, she would force it to protect its rider.

The gamble paid off.

The serpent abandoned the man mid-bite, twisting violently to shield the woman above. In that split second, Nix lunged forward, snatching the wounded alliance worker from the air before he could fall.

He carried the man straight to Rory.

She recognized him immediately.

He was the one who had delivered produce to her just that morning.

"Boss—what are you doing here?" the man gasped, blood soaking his clothes. One arm was gone, torn clean off, and his legs bent at impossible angles. Yet his first concern wasn’t his injuries. "This place is dangerous—leave now!"

Rory’s chest tightened.

Everyone around them was injured. No one stood whole. And yet, at the sight of her, their instinct was not to retreat—but to shield her.

"Boss, get back!""We’ll hold them off!""Leave this to us!"

This wasn’t a conflict the Empire police would intervene in. It involved noble Dragon Kind families, and worse—Rank 9 combatants. Law enforcement would never step into a slaughter like this.

A furious roar split the air.

"You dared to harm my huntress—prepare to die!"

Nae surged forward, rage shaking the ground.

Nix stepped in front of Rory instantly, without hesitation.

"Rory," he said low and steady, "I’ll hold him back. You go."

As her suitor, it was his duty to shield her with his life.

"Go?" Nae sneered. "No one is leaving."

His massive serpentine body expanded once more—and a suffocating aura washed across the battlefield.

Rank 10 pressure.

Nix’s face drained of color.

"Rank 10..."

No wonder Nae dared to slaughter openly. He had already broken through the ceiling.

The woman who had ridden the serpent glared at Rory with naked hatred and pointed sharply.

"Nae. Is she Jasper’s huntress?"

Nae nodded reverently. His massive form collapsed inward, reshaping into a towering human figure. He cradled the woman protectively in his arms.

"Miss Liann," he said respectfully, "that is Roanna Smith—Jasper’s huntress."

Katy Liann leaned closer, her gaze cold and venomous.

"Jasper rejected me," she sneered, "for a mere Rank 4 female?"

Her lips curled into a cruel smile. "Bring her here. I will kill her myself. If Jasper cannot serve me, then the Interstellar Hunter Alliance will."

If Rory died—even without an official bond—Jasper’s failure to protect his huntress would destroy him. Rank, status, authority—gone.

Nae straightened, eyes gleaming with bloodlust as he turned back toward Rory.

"Yes, Miss Liann," he said eagerly. "I have never tasted female blood before."

His smile widened, monstrous and eager.

"After she’s slaughtered, I will drain her dry—and see how female blood differs from male."
