Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Florence

Everyone gathered around Florence’s bed. Charles held the vial inside his hand.

He was a little trembling.

Carter put a hand on his shoulder. "Do it. I promise you on my life. She will be fine."

Charles nodded. The old man approached the girl on the bed.

Amelia helped her to sit up.

"Thank you, Miss Orchard."

Charles wrapped his arm around her and helped her drink the potion.

The potion was clear. As clear as water. Maybe it wouldn’t work. Maybe it would only make her worse.

Charles was afraid.

Florence’s lips moved slightly.

Then she opened her eyes.

"Charles... You’re dead too, huh?" Florence’s first words accompanied with a sarcasm chuckle.

All that tenderness of Charles was gone. A facade enveloped him. The image of a strong unbreakable man.

"I’m glad you finally decide to wake up." Charles put her down gently. "I waste a lot of pounds on saving you, girl. I expect you to clean the house until you’re free of debt."

Amelia frowned. ’What the hell? He was just so gentle before.

Florence coughed. "Don’t worry, old man. I pay you every single penny."

Charles’s hand clenched tightly as she coughed. But he didn’t move forward. The old man waved dismissively.

"Take care of her, Miss Orchard."

Then he turned to Carter.

"As for you, Dr. Hugo. Come to my office. We’ll settle your payment."

"Gladly."

Florence watched as the strange doctor left with Charles. Then she turned to Amelia.

"I haven’t seen you before."

"I’m Amelia, Miss Fontaine. I’m your nurse."

Charles sat down and wrote a cheque for Carter.

"This cheque will have my seal on it. You can cash it out at any bank in Anglas. Just remember not to wave it around. It can kill you." Charles gave him the document.

"You’re a man of your word, Mr. Desilet." Carter pocketed the cheque. "I will write some prescriptions for Miss Fontaine and a few things you need to look out for. Miss Orchard should be able to take care of the rest."

"You’re not staying?" Charles frowned.

"For a few days only, Mister Desilet. I will make sure Miss Fontaine have a full recover before leaving. I disturb you long enough."

Charles shook his head, "You didn’t disturb me, Dr. Hugo. Please know that my home will always welcome you. I believe that it is much better than those inns down the road."

"Certainly, Mr. Desilet. But my work summon me. I’ll need to continue my research."

He wanted more skin shards, specifically. More powerful Undead. The Undead of Orkshire was too weak.

"I understand, Dr. Hugo."

For the next few days, Carter stayed and watched over Florence Fontaine. This girl wasn’t ordinary. Her body naturally gathered Negative Energy. She was an invitation to all kinds of evil in this world.

Carter did as much as he could and cared for her. He told her what she needed to look out for and how to maintain her Negative Energy in a low state.

Then he left. The story of Emmanuel Hugo in Orkshire had ended. He earned 100 pounds. A fortune that could last him for life if he didn’t use it too much.

Charles and Florence waved goodbye to Carter.

"Have a safe trip, Dr. Hugo." Florence smiled.

She was a beautiful girl. A vessel of great sorrow and desperation. There was a certain darkness in her.

Carter was sure that it wouldn’t be the last time they saw each other.

He waved back. "Stay safe, Miss Fontaine. Stay safe, Mr. Desilet."

Charles smiled back and waved.

The carriage disappeared down the road as Doctor Emmanuel Hugo left Orkshire.

"I wonder if we will ever meet him again." Florence said.

"Maybe. We will visit him eventually."

"How so?" Florence said.

"Our goal is at the same location. Luandon."

Carter left for Luandon. The capital city of Anglas and was also the dirtiest, filthiest, and most dangerous place in this country. The Black Blood was destroying the city and it was only a shadow of what it once was.

He expected to find there, an even greater force of power.

And also, the ingredients to finish his experiment.

Carter held the purple vile in his hand.

"I can make an Undead. Or maybe... I can do so much more. Would these pathogens be able to accomplish the impossible?"

The ride to Luandon was uneventful. The coachman talked with Carter for a while and was quite interested in him.

Physicians were a rare breed in Anglas. Even in Luandon, there were only less than a hundred people. And that was the capital center of this country.

They stopped at an inn in the night to rest. The people were drinking beers in the bar. There were only two types in this age. Light and dark.

Carter didn’t order any and just had plain tea. He observed the scene on the side.

’A steam and oil society. They haven’t discovered electricity yet. I wonder if this world will take the same trajectories as Earth. Or will it be different?’

Instead of traveling across dimensions, Carter felt like he was time traveling instead. There were just too many similarities in this world compared to Earth. They were almost like echoes to each other.

Suddenly, a drunkard dropped to the ground and began to convulse. His veins went dark.

"Black Blood! Black Blood!" Someone shouted.

Everyone scattered away from the drunkard, in fear of catching the disease.

Carter put his gloves on and approached the man.

"Remain calm! I am a doctor! I will check on him!"

He checked his pulse. High and elevated. The first sign of Black Blood infection. Luckily, the man wasn’t infected too badly and he was still curable.

Carter took out a bottle of Antibiotic Potion and gave the man a small amount. He poured it out a different cup to avoid direct contact with his potion bottle.

"The man is in very early stages. This medicine should help him quickly."

The Potion worked its miracle quickly. The dark veins disappeared as the potion destroyed the harmful pathogens in his blood.

"Holy... This man is wizard." A bar customer said.

"Please. I am just a doctor." Carter smiled gently. "Can someone help him find somewhat to rest? He needs to sleep."

"Aye. I knew him. His house is just down the block."

"Let me help you carry him as well."

Two large men carried the drunkard away. The bar customers surrounded Carter.

"That was so quick, Doctor!"

"Are you a member of the Enthrall Institute?"

"What is the Enthrall Institute?" Carter raised an eyebrow.
