Infinite Paths: The Raging Phoenix-Chapter 886: Lawful chaotic
Rain talked with Larisa and Nigel and explained his plan. It was very simple, but they still had their annoying opinions to share.
"Alright, here’s the deal. I’ve been thinking about restoring your memories and powers, Larisa. I figured I could use relics or even bits of dragons to help jog your memory and boost your strength. However, I wasn’t planning to use my mana directly on you for obvious reasons," Rain said.
Larisa listened intently, nodding occasionally, and then tried to convince him that it might not be the most efficient approach. Since Nigel and she likely came from different parts of the world, our sources of memories could be different. In this case, using relics or parts of dragons on both of us could be twice as effective."
Rain considered Larisa’s point. Diversity in origins might mean diversity in their memories as well. For the sake of knowledge, that was truly the best option, but it was still suspicious.
Larisa’s accent and demeanor hinted at her Indian heritage, which led Rain to make assumptions about her background. He realized that leveraging this potential diversity in their origins could indeed be more efficient in the restoration process.
He found himself intrigued by the prospect of using this method to help Larisa and even Nigel, recognizing the potential benefits of their differing backgrounds when it comes to the history of the world…
"Nah, I don’t like it," Rain said. "Maybe I should consult Isa again and talk if I can learn authority magic… then I would be able to trust you two a bit if you were to become my impossible to defy my orders minions."
"Wow… from a man of the twenty-first century, I can’t believe that you would go as far as to try to deprive us of our free will," Nigel said.
"I would gladly do that if that can decrease the chances of you stabbing me in the back," Rain said while shrugging.
Rain’s perspective on trust and caution was deeply rooted in his experiences. The mindset prevailing in the modern age, especially among those who hadn’t faced the harsh realities of conflict and war, was something Rain found difficult to even consider. The pacifistic ideals and trust-based approach seemed almost absurd to him, given the trials he had endured.
His encounters with imminent death, from facing meteors flying towards him to surviving dragon attacks, had shaped his worldview in a way that diverged sharply from the ideals of a peaceful, trusting society. Rain had lost count of how many times he had seen the limits of how own mortality, the scars of those encounters were vivid into his memory.
Reflecting on his previous life, Rain remembered adhering to advice from individuals who never experienced the adrenaline of battle or the agony of near-death encounters. Their counsel came from comfortable offices and safe environments, far removed from the chaos of real danger. He had sacrificed parts of himself to fit societal expectations and please others, only to meet his end eventually.
Rain vowed not to fall into that pattern again. The trust that was so easily broken by those who never faced true peril seemed like a luxury he couldn’t afford. He wouldn’t let others take away his defenses or manipulate his actions for the sake of mere conformity.
His experiences had forged a resilience and skepticism that made him wary of extending trust easily, especially in a world that showed no mercy.
"You don’t trust him because of that thing covering half of his body?" Larisa asked.
"That is only a small fraction of the reason," Rain said. "You see, you can’t grow anything good on bad soil, I believe that he decided to go that far, and he doesn’t feel worried about the shadow because he thinks that it is just a minor convenience, even though it should be pretty clear what was able to do with his psych."

"And for that reason, you trust me more…" Larisa said while nodding and rubbing her chin thoughtfully.
"Trust is too much of a powerful word," Rain said. "Anyway, there is nothing left of your bodies, right? That meant that whatever power juice he injected in himself was potent enough to even change his mana and perhaps even his spirit. I would be a madman if I weren’t that cautious around him."
"Come on, I am just a very clear representation of yin and yang," Nigel said. "Like, lawful chaotic."
"There is no goodness in your darkness, but I bet there is plenty of badness in your good side," Rain said. "Anyway, this isn’t up for debate anymore. I am busy with a cosmic problem, you guys are so self-centered that you can’t even accept that…"
"That is exactly why we want to help… anyway, this is going in circles," Larisa said and then shook her head. "You should do what you want to do for now. We will be there when you don’t get the results that you want, and we will offer some alternatives."
Rain didn’t believe that one bit, but he decided to stay quiet about and then just resumed his traveling… Rain was getting tired and recognized the necessity of a brief pause. However, his relentless drive propelled him forward despite the urge to rest. With his focus, he dashed towards the ancient city once more.
After a day of a long travel, Rain reached the ancient city and immediately proceeded to dig out the dragon golems’ heads, hoping to utilize them in the process of recovering Larisa’s memories. To his surprise, and as soon as the heads were used on the same process they disintegrated into dust before his very eyes.
The unexpected crumbling of the dragon golems’ heads puzzled Rain. He had hoped these relics would be useful, but he didn’t expect that such a thing would happen… Still, he soon returned to his mental landscape and saw that Larisa hadn’t changed that much, but her eyes had more clarity in them… her presence also seemed more clear.
